、s Committee. Peel testing of adhesive bonds is widely used for assessing the performance of adhesives and, because of the wide diversity of the flexibility of substrates which may be used, no single peel test will fulfil the requirements of all cases. This Part of this British Standard is intended t

、o test an assembly consisting of two rigid adherends and is one of a series of peel tests. The other tests in this series are as follows: Part C9: Floating roller peel test; Part C10: Peel test for a flexible-to-rigid assembly; Part C11: 180 peel test for a flexible-to-rigid assembly; Part C12: 180

、“T” peel test for a flexible-to-flexible assembly: Part C13: Climbing drum peel test. It should be understood that all tests in which one adherend is peeled from another involve complex stress distribution. At the separation of the adherends, there is a stress concentration resulting in rupture of t

、end surfaces, under the specified conditions of test. It is expressed in newtons 4 Principle Adherends are separated at a substantially steady rate from an open edge of a prepared bond line so that the separation occurs progressively along the bond line. For the90 peel test for a rigid-to-rigid asse

、mbly, the force is applied approximately normal to the plane of the bond through the separated test piece which has been preformed into a segment of a circle. 5 Apparatus 5.1 Tensile testing machine. The tensile testing machine shall comply with the requirements of BS5214-1 and it shall be of low in

、ertia. 5.2 Test jig. A test jig is required to hold the test piece to the circumference of a sector of a cylinder, diameter150mm and width25mm (see Figure 1 for suitable arrangement). 5.3 Rollers. Rollers shall be used for initial shaping of the test piece (see Figure 3). 6 Test pieces 6.1 Adherends

、. The adherends shall be two strips of flat material of dimensions 250mm 25 0.5mm and200mm 25 0.5mm. Both adherends shall be the same width and each shall be of uniform thickness. NOTEThe material commonly used for this test is aluminium coated aluminium alloy0.84mm thick complying with the requirem

、ents ofL152 (British Standard Aerospace Series). 6.2 Preparation of test pieces. Unless otherwise specified the faying surfaces of the adherends shall be prepared in accordance with the requirements of Part A1 of this standard. Apply the adhesive over the whole width of the adherends to a length of1

、50mm on each adherend as shown in Figure 2 by the method recommended by the manufacturer of the adhesive and bond the adherends using the methods recommended by the manufacturer of the adhesive. NOTE 1A convenient method of obtaining a sharp adhesive boundary is to place a thin strip of material to

、which the adhesive does not adhere (abhesive strip) at the tag end of the panel. Alternatively, panels of suitable size shall be bonded and test pieces cut from the assembly, discarding12mm edges and taking care to avoid frictional heating and mechanical damage to the bond. If a press is used to mak

、e the test piece it shall be capable of applying an even pressure over the entire bonded area and it should preferably be fitted with a time-release mechanism. In order to give a uniform distribution of pressure over the bonded area the platens of the press shall be parallel. Where this is impractic

、able, one platen shall be covered with a resilient pad. NOTE 2A10mm thick pad of rubber of hardness approximately45 IRHD (see BS903-A26) has been found satisfactory on a press that applies a pressure up to700kPa. The preparation procedure shall be such as to minimize variations and the use of a pneu

、matic or hydraulic press, hand or power operated, which can apply a pressure up to1MPa, is recommended. 6.3 Number of tests. The number of test pieces shall be as specified or, if the number is not specified, they shall be not less than three. (See also Part E1 of this standard.)BS5350-C14:1979 2 BS

、I 07-1999 7 Conditioning and test atmosphere It is desirable that adherends should be prepared, stored and bonded and the assemblies conditioned and tested under standard conditions of temperature and humidity. Unless otherwise specified, the recommended conditions are a temperature of23 2 C and505%

、r.h. 8 Procedure Using the forming rollers, bend the test piece to a75mm radius with the shorter strip on the inside (seeFigure2). Then bend the extending75mm tag into a right angle away from the inner strip. Clamp the test piece into the test jig and mount the jig in the testing machine as shown in

、 Figure 1. Adjust the rate of separation of the strip so that the outer strip is pulled off at a rate of50 5mm/min. As the strip is pulled the drum section rotates, maintaining an angle of about90 between the adherends. Continue the test until at least125mm of the bonded area is separated. Note the

、type of failure. 9 Expression of results Take the force indicated when the outer adherend has been peeled over a length of at least100mm, after disregarding the first25mm, as the peeling force. For each test piece determine from the curve of force/grip separation the average peeling force in newtons

、. Determine the average force from the curve by drawing an average estimate line(seeFigure 4) or by using other suitable means if a more accurate result is required. Record the maximum and minimum force. Calculate the arithmetic mean of the results for all the test pieces. NOTEFor the statistical tr

、eatment of results see Part E1 of this standard. 10 Test report The report shall state the following: a) a designation of the adhesive, giving all information required for complete identification of the sample; b) a description of the adherends including material thickness and surface preparation; c

、) a description of the bonding process, including method of application of the adhesive, drying or precuring conditions (where applicable) and curing time, temperature and pressure; d) the average thickness (as precisely as possible) of the adhesive layer after formation of the bond; e) a complete d

、escription of the test piece including dimensions and construction, and the number of test pieces; f) the conditioning procedure prior to testing and the test atmosphere; g) the rate of separation of the grips; h) the method of determining the average force; i) the average, maximum and minimum peeli

、ng force values for each test piece in newtons, and the arithmetic mean of the results for all the test pieces; j) the type of failure for each test piece, i.e.adhesive, cohesive, adherend, or the degree of coalescence of the adhesive films; k) that the method of test complied with the requirements
