This edition introduces technical changes but it does not reflect a full review or revision of the standard, which will be undertaken in due course. This edition differs from the previous edition in that the scop

、e has been amended to emphasize that the test is not intended to be used for obtaining numerical design data. The references have been brought up-to-date, and clause5 has been aligned with requirements in the other parts of the text. The determination of bond strength in compressive shear is an alte

、rnative to its determination in longitudinal shear as described in Part C5 of this standard. It is particularly useful for tests on brittle adhesives or with brittle adherends for which the longitudinal shear method is not applicable. There are two bond lines in the test piece, and the breaking stre

、ss is not a simple function of the area coated by the adhesive. Nevertheless, the stress in the adhesive is less subject to stress components (other than that of shear) than is the case in simple single lap joints. As the breaking force can be influenced by the dimensions of the adherends, the bond-

、line thickness and the rate of change of stress, it is necessary to standardize the procedure in order to obtain reproducibility. It is envisaged that this test will be used on adhesives for civil engineering. The test does not necessarily reflect how an adhesive would perform in service. Such desig

、test piece to a compressive force. The method is applicable to all types of adhesive. Although primarily intended for use under ambient conditions, the basic method is also applicable to testing under a wide range of temperatures and other environmental conditions. The method requires rigid adherend

、s produced to specified dimensional tolerances. This test is intended for ranking and quality control of adhesives and not for obtaining data for design purposes. NOTEThe test may still be useful for research or control purposes even if the strength of the bond exceeds the strength of the adherend.

、l analysis. 3 Definition For the purposes of this Part of this British Standard the following definition applies. compressive shear a mode of application of a force in longitudinal compression that acts in the plane of the bond line 4 Principle A joint formed from three cubes bonded by faces paralle

、l to the applied force is strained to rupture in compression, the reported result being the observed force at rupture. NOTEIn some applications the cubes are replaced by other right rectangular prisms. 5 Supplementary information The following information shall be provided before the test is carried

、 out: a) form and dimensions of the adherends and the material or materials from which they are to be constructed; b) details of the pretreatment of the adherends; c) details of the conditions under which the adherends were prepared and stored; d) the method of applying the adhesive, the amount used

、 or the bond-line thickness, and the open time; e) the method of making the bond, including details of bonding pressure and temperature and the curing procedure; f) details of conditioning and for other environmental procedures to be applied to the test pieces after bonding and before testing. If it

、 is not practicable to specify a single value for any of the above variables a range shall be quoted. NOTE 1Any arbitrarily chosen value within such a range or any combination of such values for several variables should be acceptable to both the manufacturer and the purchaser of the adhesive. NOTE 2

、For civil engineering purposes,a),b) ande) above and the bond-line thickness are given in clause7. 6 Apparatus 6.1 Compression testing machine, complying with the requirements of BS5214-2 and of low inertia. 6.2 Test jig. The jig shall be such as to support the test piece securely in the testing mac

、hine whilst the compressive shearing force is applied parallel to the planes of the bonds and distributed evenly between them (see Figure 1). 7 Test pieces 7.1 Adherends 7.1.1 Selection. The two outer adherends shall be of identical material. NOTE 1The inner adherend may be of a different material i

、f required. For adhesives used for civil engineering applications, concrete test cubes prepared in accordance with BS1881-108, cured in accordance with BS1881-111 for at least7 days and of a composition complying with the requirements of type C50 or C60 of BS5328 shall be used. NOTE 2The adherends s

、hould be preferably in the form of cubes of side100 1mm.BS5350-C15:1990 2 BSI 06-1999 NOTE 3The selection of the dimensions of adherends depends on the following: a) the strength of the adhesive being tested; b) the intended application of the adhesive; c) the nature of the adherend material; d) the

、 nature of any environmental tests to be applied to the test piece; e) the force range of the test machine. NOTE 4The100mm cube recommended is regarded as appropriate to applications in civil engineering. 7.1.2 Preparation. Before bonding prepare the faying surfaces of the adherends in accordance wi

、th Part A1 of this standard. For civil engineering applications, abrade the surfaces of the concrete test cubes (see Table 1 of BS5350-A1:1976). 7.2 Bonding Apply the adhesive to the faying surfaces of the adherends and assemble and complete the bond by the methods recommended by the manufacturer of

、 the adhesive. In the absence of such guidance the procedure used shall be such as to minimize bonding variations and shall be reported. NOTE 1The use of a jig to ensure accurate alignment of the adherends is recommended. The applied adhesive layer shall be as thin and even as possible, consistent w

、ith complete filling of the bond line. NOTE 2The bond-line thickness required may be achieved by applying a predetermined quantity of adhesive to the adherends, the application of a specified pressure during assembly, or by a spacer between the cubes. The excess around the periphery of the cubes aft

、er the test piece has been assembled may be removed, if required, at a suitable stage in the bonding process. NOTE 3A bond-line thickness of2mm is recommended for adhesives for civil engineering applications. 7.3 Number of tests The number of tests depends on the precision required (see Part E1 of t

、his standard) and shall be stated in the test report. NOTEReliance should not be placed on fewer than five tests. 8 Conditioning and testing atmosphere As the storage conditions of the adherends and the times and environmental conditions obtaining during the curing, conditioning and storage of the b

、onded assemblies can have a substanial effect on results, either: a) the conditions shall comply with the instructions given by the manufacturer of the adhesive; or, if no conditions are specified by the manufacturer: b) the conditions for storage, curing and conditioning of the adherends and bonded

、 assemblies shall be23 2 C and505% r.h. The bonded assemblies shall be stored for at least16h before testing. The times and conditions shall be stated in the test report. 9 Procedure Locate the test piece in the testing jig (see Figure 1) and set the machine in motion. Operate the machine so that th

、e test piece is subject to a force which increases at a constant (i.e.steady) rate. This rate shall be such that the joint shall be broken in a period of65 20s. Record the highest force and the type of failure. 10 Expression of results Express the results of the tests as the mean of the breaking for

、ce of all the test pieces, giving an indication of the spread of the results (e.g.the standard deviation, see Part E1 of this standard) and type of failure. 11 Test report The report shall state the following: a) a designation of the adhesive, giving all information required for complete identificat

、ion of the sample; b) the items of supplementary information given in clause5; c) the rate of application of force; d) the number of test pieces tested and the mean breaking force, together with information about the spread of results; e) the type of failure for each test piece, i.e.whether adhesive

、, cohesive or adherend, and, if applicable, the degree of coalescence of the adhesive; f) that the method complied with the requirements of this standard, i.e.BS5350-C15; g) any other factor which may have affected the result.BS5350-C15:1990 BSI 06-1999 3 Figure 1 Compressive shear testBS5350-C15: 1
