10、curity, who requested its conversion into a British Standard. Particulars for the making up of mattress covers using the fabric specified in this standard are given in BS5223-4. However, whilst fabric conforming to the requirements of this standard meets the needs of the Department of Health and Soc

11、ial Security for the National Health Service, the use of the fabric as a mattress cover material by other users need not be excluded. This standard does not include requirements for flammability. The reason is that taking account of other bedding items used (i.e.mattress, sheets, blankets and counte

12、rpane) that represent the fuel load, research has shown that a mattress cover made from flame retardant fabric does not reduce the hazard nor is there at the present time an inherently flame retardant material which meets the other requirements of this standard. A British Standard does not purport t

13、o include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. 15、quirements for a polyurethane coated nylon fabric to be used in the manufacture of mattress covers. 2 References The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 3 Marking Each roll of coated fabric shall have a label attached bearing the following inf

16、ormation. a) The name and/or distinctive marks of the manufacturer. b) The number of this British Standard, i.e.BS5455. 4 Number of cuts in the roll A roll of coated fabric complying with the requirements of this standard may contain cuts. If the roll consists of more than one piece or length, the n

17、umber of pieces and the minimum length of each piece of the material shall be as agreed between the purchaser and the supplier. 5 Standard pattern A standard pattern, when obtainable from the purchasing authority, shall constitute the standard for any properties not defined in this specification. 6

18、Material The base fabric shall be manufactured from continuous filament, flat (low twist) yarns of either nylon6.6 or nylon6. 6.1 A nylon fabric meeting the requirements of this standard should be one with yarns of11.0 tex having approximately28 ends and28 picks per centimetre, and mass per unit are

19、a of approximately61g/m 2 . Other constructions may be used provided that the finished fabric meets the requirements listed inTable 1 andTable 2. 6.2 The fabric shall be free from size; it shall be heat-set to enable it to withstand subsequent processing and the scoured fabric shall not contain any

20、impurity which may adversely affect the coating process. 6.3 The fabric shall be uniformly coated on one side with a polyurethane elastomer. The coating shall be free from pin holes and cracks. 6.4 The coated side of the base fabric shall be printed in a one-colour design similar to that of the stan

21、dard pattern, in golden brown No.414 to BS381C. 6.5 The coated fabric shall be silicone-proofed on the coated side. 6.6 The finished fabric shall comply with the requirements ofTable 1 andTable 2. 6.7 The handle and appearance of the coated fabric shall match that of the standard pattern. 6.8 The fi

27、Sterilization and disinfection procedures approved by the Department of Health and Social Security Any of the following methods of sterilization are approved by the DHSS but method a) is preferred. In all issues of dispute the criteria for acceptance shall be up to10 sterilizations employing method

28、a) or b)3). a) Sterilization by steam in a porous load sterilizer manufactured to the requirements of BS3970-1. Automatic process control providing sterilizing conditions of134+ 4, 0 C for not less than3min. b) Sterilization by steam in a sterilizer designed for air removal from the load by downward

29、 displacement. These sterilizers are manually controlled to provide one of the following time/temperature relationships throughout all parts of the load 1) 121 + 2, 0 C for not less than15 min. 2) 126 + 3, 0 C for not less than10 min. 3) 134 + 4, 0 C for not less than3 min. The use of downward displ

30、acement sterilizers can entail the exposure of the load to an oxidizing atmosphere at elevated temperatures caused by the inherently slow removal of air from the load. The steaming time can be in excess of2h before correct conditions are obtained throughout the load and the exposure in 1), 2), or 3)

31、 finally given. c) Sterilization by steam at subatmospheric pressure with an add mixture of formaldehyde vapour in a purpose built sterilizer complying with the requirements of BS3970. Exposure to sterilizing conditions is for up to2h at73 C. d) Disinfection by steam at subatmospheric pressure at73

32、C for up to30min, using a sterilizer/disinfector as in paragraph c). Appendix B Tests NOTEIn carrying out the following tests due notice should be taken of the potentially hazardous nature of the reagents used and precautions should be taken to prevent personnel from coming into contact with boiling

33、 solution and spray. It is recommended that all glassware should be of borosilicate3.3; and that goggles conforming to the requirements of BS2092:1967 “C” type should be worn along with protective gloves and lab coat or apron. In addition a suitable eyewash should be kept convenient. B.1 Test for re

34、sistance to water penetration after treatment in sodium hydroxide Immerse not less than five specimens of the coated fabric, each measuring75mm 75mm, in boiling sodium hydroxide solution (40g NaOH per litre) for10min in such a manner as to avoid contact between specimens and mechanical agitation or

35、rubbing of the specimens. Any specimens which stick together should be discarded and the test repeated on fresh specimens. Means shall be provided for immersing all five specimens into the solution simultaneously and for their simultaneous removal and rinsing. Immediately after removal of the specim

36、ens from the solution thoroughly rinse the wet specimens in running tap water, dry them in air at80 2 C for10min and test for resistance to water penetration using method29C of BS3424:1973. The apparatus should enable the concentration of the solution to be maintained by prohibiting evaporation whil

37、st maintaining normal atmospheric pressure. B.2 Test for resistance to water penetration after abrasion After carrying out not less than two wash tests under the conditions described in BS3661-18, subject not less than four specimens to the test described in method27 of BS3424:1973, except that each

38、 specimen shall be mounted on the bottom plate with the coated face upwards over a felt pad cut from felt of3.2mm thickness, specified in BS4060 as PKF1 white. The abradant, mounted on the movable head of the test instrument, shall be the standard abrasive fabric specified in Appendix A of BS2543:19

39、70, and the weight-piece added to the moving head shall be400g. After5000 rubs, determine the resistance to water penetration using method29C of BS3424:1973. B.3 Test for resistance to water penetration after treatment in methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) Mount not less than five specimens of the coated fab

40、ric each measuring75mm 75mm in a frame to prevent curling, agitate them in methyl ethyl ketone for30min at room temperature and then dry them in air at80 2 C for10min. Determine the resistance to water penetration using method29C of BS3424:1973.BS5455:1977 4 BSI 09-1999 B.4 Test for resistance to wa

41、ter penetration and determination of colour fastness after dry cleaning Treat separately not less than five specimens of the coated fabric each measuring75mm 75mm according to the method described in BS3661-20. Determine the resistance to water penetration using method29C of BS3424:1973. Before test

42、ing for water penetration assess one of the specimens for change of colour. Also assess the discoloration of the solvent used in testing the specimen. B.5 Test for resistance to water penetration after treatment in ethanol Prepare not less than five specimens by drawing a circle50mm in diameter on t

43、he printed face of fabric specimens each measuring75mm 75mm. Place each specimen on a75mm watch glass with the printed face uppermost, and cover the marked area with an aqueous solution of70% v/v ethanol at20 2 C. Cover each watch glass so as to prevent evaporation. After 30 min pour off the solutio

44、n, rinse each specimen in running tap water, blot with filter paper and then dry each in air at80 2 C for10min. Test each specimen for resistance to water penetration using method29C of BS3424:1973. B.6 Test for resistance to water penetration after treatment in sodium hypochlorite Prepare not less

45、than five specimens by drawing a circle50mm in diameter on the printed face of fabric specimens each measuring75mm 75mm. Place each specimen on a75mm watch glass with the printed face uppermost and cover the marked area with an aqueous solution of laboratory grade sodium hypochlorite (2% available c

46、hlorine), at20 2 C for10min. After30min pour off the solution, rinse each specimen in running tap water, blot with filter paper and then dry each in air at80 2 C for10min. Test each specimen for resistance to water penetration using method29C of BS3424:1973. B.7 Test for colour fastness to ethanol a

47、nd sodium hypochlorite Prepare two composite specimens by sewing samples of bleached cotton fabric, free from starch or other finish, and each measuring50mm 40mm, to one half of the printed side of each test specimen, measuring100mm 40mm, leaving half of each specimen uncovered. a) Immerse one compo

48、site specimen in70% v/v aqueous solution of ethanol at20 2 C for30min. b) Immerse the other composite specimen in an aqueous solution of laboratory grade sodium hypochlorite (2% available chlorine) at20 2 C for30min. c) Remove the stitching along three sides, open out and dry the composite specimens

49、 at room temperature.
