、i BSI 10-1999 Foreword This Part of BS5734 has been prepared under the direction of the Plastics Standards Policy Committee and is a revision of BS5734-5:1980, which is withdrawn. This Part of BS5734 is the fifth in a series for polyester moulding compounds; the other Parts are as follows: Part1: Me
、thods of test; Part2: Specification for dough moulding compounds for electrical purposes; Part3: Specification for dough moulding compounds for mechanical purposes; Part4: Specification for sheet moulding compounds for electrical purposes. In this revision the test methods have been updated. The mec
、hanical requirements in this Part are identical to those in Part4 but this Part does not specify that the fibrous reinforcement be E-glass. The use of asbestos is excluded. The requirements for low profile grades are under consideration and it is planned to issue a supplement in due course to cater
、for this type of material. Given in Appendix A is a list of additional properties that may be the subject of purchaser/supplier agreements, together with appropriate test methods that can be used to assess compliance. Product certification. Users of this British Standard are advised to consider the
、desirability of third party certification of product conformity with this BritishStandard based on testing and continuing surveillance, which may be coupled with assessment of a suppliers quality systems against the appropriate Part of BS5750. Enquiries as to the availability of third party certific
、ation schemes will be forwarded by BSI to the Association of Certification Bodies. If a third party certification scheme does not already exist, users should consider approaching an appropriate body from the list of Association members. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessar

Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 to4,
、 an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS5734-5:1990 BSI 10-1999 1 1 Scope This Part of BS5734 specifies thermosetting polyester shee
、t moulding compounds which are classified according to their mechanical properties and may be further distinguished by their oxygen index. NOTE 1Appendix A lists further properties and appropriate test methods that may be specified by agreement between the purchaser and the supplier. NOTE 2The title
、s of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS5734, the following definitions apply. 2.1 E-glass low alkali glass containing not more than1% of alkali metal oxides expressed as Na 2 O 2.2 batch a quantity of m
、aterial so designated by the manufacturer and of uniform quality 3 Classification Requirements are specified for the following three types of sheet moulding compounds: S1: for mouldings with superior mechanical properties; S2: a general purpose material with good mechanical properties; S3: a general
、 purpose material with lower mechanical properties. NOTECompounds may be further distinguished by their oxygen index if agreed between the purchaser and the supplier (seeAppendix A). 4 Composition The material shall consist of a chemically-thickened unsaturated polyester resin system, combined with
、fillers and fibrous reinforcement other than asbestos, which is supplied in sheet form and is capable of being cured by moulding under heat and pressure. 5 Preparation of test specimens The moulding conditions shall be as given in Annex C of BS2782:Method902A. Unless otherwise stated in the test req
、uirements, the test specimens shall be cut from a moulded sheet of the appropriate thickness, which shall have been made in a positive or semi-positive mould. 6 Conditioning of test specimens before testing Unless otherwise specified in the test method, condition the moulded test specimens for at le
、ast16h at a temperature of23 2 C and ambient relative humidity before testing. 7 Properties The material, as supplied, shall comply with clauses8 and9. The moulded and conditioned materials (see clauses5 and6) shall comply with Table 1. NOTESee Appendix A for optional requirements that a purchaser m

、y strip across a roll shall not differ by more than 12% from the nominal value for the average mass per unit area which shall be declared by the manufacturer. b) The mass per unit area of individual test specimens taken from a single strip across the roll shall not differ from the mean value for all
、 the test specimens taken from the same strip by more than 10% of the nominal value. 9 Glass content The glass content shall be declared by the manufacturer and when tested as described in method2 of BS5734-1:1990, shall be within 4% of the declared value. NOTEFor example, for a declared value of25%
、 the permitted range is21% to29%. 10 Storage life The manufacturer shall state the storage life of the material when kept in the original unopened container under the conditions recommended by the manufacturer. Immediately after first opening the container, at any time within the stated storage life
、, the material shall be mouldable and shall comply with clause7. 11 Marking Containers of material shall be marked clearly with the following information. a) manufacturers name or trade mark; b) material classification; c) batch number; d) mass per unit area (ing/m 2 ); e) glass content; f) number a
