8、Association. It is a revision of BS5740:1979 which is withdrawn. This revision adds new can capacities to the standard but reduces the number of alternative sizes from those given in the first edition. For cans without handles a central closure position is now standardized. A British Standard does n
9、ot purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. 11、rd specifies capacities, dimensions and constructional requirements for a range of oblong flat-top cans manufactured from tinplate with nominal filling volumes between125ml and 5 litres, intended to contain liquid products. Closure and, where relevant, handle positions are specified but not the type
12、 of closure or handle. NOTE 1Appendix A gives recommendations on details to be agreed between purchaser and supplier. NOTE 2The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard, the definitions given
13、in BS3130-4 apply, together with the following. gross lidded capacity the total capacity of a closed can, determined in accordance with BS6966-2 3 Materials, design and construction 3.1 Materials Cans shall be manufactured from tinplate complying with BS2920. 3.2 Design The capacities and dimensions
14、 of the cans shall be as specified inTable 1 orTable 2, for cans with and without handles respectively (see alsoFigure 1 andFigure 2). 3.3 Construction Cans shall be of built-up construction, with a body side seam soldered internally or externally, cemented or welded. The ends of the tin shall be co
15、mpound-lined and double-seamed to the body. 4 Handles Handles shall be fitted to cans of the capacities and dimensions specified inTable 1. Where a strap handle is fitted, it shall be located as specified inTable 3 and shown inFigure 3. 5 Closures Closures on cans fitted with handles shall be positi
16、oned as specified inTable 3 and shown inFigure 3. Closures on cans without handles shall be positioned centrally (seeFigure 4). NOTE 1Although Figure 1 andFigure 2 show tinplate rolled threaded necks and caps, the closure positions specified are suitable for a wide variety of tinplate closures and s
17、ome plastics plug-in closures. Tinplate screw necks are normally integral with the top end or soldered or clenched in position by the can manufacturer. Plastics plug-in closures are normally fitted by the filler. NOTE 2BS6499 specifies metal screw necks, screw caps and inner seals of 25mm, 38mm and
18、76mm nominal diameter which may be suitable.
