、 BS5760 has been prepared under the direction of the Quality, Management and Statistics Standards Policy Committee. It is identical with IEC863:1986 Presentation of reliability, maintainability and availability predictions published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). BS5760 prov

、ides comprehensive guidance on many aspects of reliability management. Twelve Parts of this standard have been published and these may be summarized as follows: Part 0: Introductory guide to reliability. This Part provides guidance to senior management and non-specialists on the importance of reliab

、ility and explains how measures to achieve reliability should be integrated with other aspects of project management. Part 1: Guide to reliability and maintainability programme management. This Part discusses the essential features of a comprehensive reliability and maintainability programme to prod

、uce reliable and maintainable products. Part 2: Guide to the assessment of reliability. This Part contains guidance on quantitative and statistical aspects of reliability, including reliability modelling, the provision of data, and the concepts of redundancy and simulation. Part 3: Guide to reliabil

、ity practices: examples. This Part contains authentic practical examples illustrating the principles established in Parts1 and2 of BS5760. Part 4: Guide to specification clauses relating to the achievement and development of reliability in new and existing items. This Part provides detailed guidance

、 on the specification of reliability. Part 5: Guide to failure modes, effects and criticality analysis (FMEA and FMECA). This Part gives guidance on the application of these techniques. Part 6: Guide to programmes for reliability growth. This Part describes procedures to expose and remove weaknesses

、 in hardware and software items in order to achieve acceptable reliability in a product. It explains basic concepts, management and test procedures and describes techniques for analysis and correction of failures. Part 7: Guide to fault tree analysis. This Part gives guidance on the application of f

、ault tree analysis which may be used to identify factors affecting the reliability, performance and safety characteristics of a system. Part 9: Guide to the block diagram technique. This Part describes the use of the block diagram technique for modelling and evaluating the reliability of both elemen

、tary and more complex systems. The extension of the method to calculate availability is also outlined. Part 10: Guide to reliability testing Section 10.1: General requirements. This Section provides guidance on general principles, procedures and considerations for reliability testing in the laborato

、ry and in the field. Section 10.3: Compliance test procedures for steady-state availability. This Section provides guidance on techniques for availability performance testing, under defined conditions, of frequently maintained items. NOTEFurther Sections of Part10 based on other Parts of IEC605 and

、related IEC standards are also planned. Part 12: Guide to the presentation of reliability, maintainability and availability predictions. Further Parts of BS5760 are envisaged in order to provide guidance on other techniques of reliability management. At present three further

、Parts are in the process of being drafted, and these are as follows: Part 8: Guide to the assessment of reliability of systems containing software 1) . This Part will provide guidance on the assessment of reliability of systems containing software. Part 11: Guide to the collection of reliability, ma

、intainability, availability and maintenance support data from the field. Part 13: Guide to preferred test conditions for equipment reliability testing. Guidance on specific aspects of maintainability is provided in the various Parts of BS6548 Maintainability of equipment. Additonal information. The

、guidance provided in this Part of BS5760 is not limited to any specific parts failure model that may be used for prediction but is generally applicable. This standard is a guide and the use of the verbal form “shall” in the text does not indicate mandatory requirements. A British Standard does not p

、bility and availability of systems and equipment, including hardware, software and human elements. 2 Object The object of this standard is to provide the writer of a prediction report with a complete listing of all items to be considered in making a proper and full presentation of prediction informa

、tion. This recommended way of presentation is intended to facilitate comparisons between projects or reports. The purpose of a presentation of information on a prediction is to provide the reader of the report with sufficient information for the evaluation of the prediction results and on the princi

、ples and means by which these were obtained. NOTEA prediction of reliability, maintainability and availability characteristics can generally be seen as a multistage procedure. As an example, Appendix A is intended to clarify the principles of presentation of predictions. The procedure itself is not

、to be considered as a standard. 3 Definition of terms The terms used in this standard are in accordance with the definitions in IEC Publication271: List of Basic Terms, Definitions and Related Mathematics for Reliability. 4 Contents of the presentation The presentation of information regarding a pre

、diction of reliability, maintainability and availability characteristics shall be given in a report containing the items as stated in Table I. The depth of presentation (i.e. which and how many details to be given) is dependent on the purpose of the prediction. For a specific prediction not all proc

、edure steps and conditions in Sub-clauses5.2 to5.10 are necessarily applicable. For example, a pure reliability prediction of a simple apparatus or software unit may proceed without any relation to maintenance. 5 Detail requirements of the presentation The following sub-clauses enlarge upon the spec

、ific requirements listed in Table I. 5.1 Summary The object of the prediction, main use conditions, maintenance support policy and the result shall be summarized. Any fundamental, simplifying assumptions shall be stated. 5.2 Purpose of prediction The aim of a prediction may vary, such as to provide

、a basis for specification work, design analysis or planning of maintenance. It may also be to call attention to weak points in the system and in the maintenance organization and to suggest possible improvements. The intention is to govern the choice of reliability measures, methods of analysis, data

、 sources, type and depth of presentation of results, etc. Therefore, the purpose of the prediction and the relationship between the prediction and any other part of the reliability, maintainability and availability programme shall be clearly stated. 5.3 Object of prediction Information needed to ide

、ntify completely the object of the prediction shall be stated. This should, if applicable, include: a) system/equipment/software program/module/component type and specification, including development status; b) maintenance support policy; c) level of maintenance (in case of maintainability predictio

、n). Where prediction includes assumption of human performance and skill these shall be properly described and quantified to permit proper measurement in system or equipment performance evaluation. Relevant documented information, such as descriptions and diagrams, shall be included or at least refer

Each characteristic shall be defined in one of the following ways: a) by reference to IEC Publication271; b) expli
