16、ellings are connected to thefire alarm system in the common parts. In the United Kingdom, around 80% of all fire deaths and injuries occur indomestic premises, over 300 deaths and around 9 000 injuries per annum. Manyof those who die are the most vulnerable in the community, namely elderly andsociall

Indeed, the overall downward trend in annual fire deaths in domesticpremises since smoke alarms in domestic premises were first given recogn

It has been estimated that, in premises without smokedetectors, a substantial proportion of the

The fatality rate in fires in premises in whichthere is no working smoke detector is between two and three times the fatalityrate in fires in premises in which a smoke detector is present and functionscorrectly.BRITISH STANDARDB

20、S 5839-6:2013ii The British Standards Institution 2013The installation of automatic fire detectors is required in new houses, flats andmaisonettes in order to satisfy building regulations. In existing houses inmultiple occupation, the installation of an automatic fire detection and firealarm system

Thisgives rise to the need for a suitable code of practice, as BS 5839-1 does notcontain recommendations on domestic smoke alarms, nor does it address thespecial design requirements for fire detection and fire alarm systems in domesticpremi
