、99 Foreword This BritishStandard has been prepared under the direction of the Mechanical Engineering Standards Committee and with the cooperation of the British Hacksaw and Bandsaw Manufacturers Association. It is a companion to BS1919. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessar

、y provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 to4,

、 an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS6271:1982 BSI 12-1999 1 1 Scope This BritishStandard specifies the dimensions, performance c

、haracteristics and methods of test for hand operated, toothed edge, miniature hacksaw blades to ensure their fitness for purpose. The standard does not specify the pitch of blades. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For

、the purposes of this BritishStandard the following definitions apply. 2.1 blade pin the pin at each end of the blade by means of which the blade is held and tensioned in use (see Figure 1) 2.2 datum line the longitudinal line that passes through the centre of the blade pins (see Figure 1) 2.3 teeth

、the serrations formed across the thickness of the blade to provide cutting edges 2.4 toothed edge the longitudinal edge along which the teeth have been formed (see Figure 1) 2.5 tooth cutting edge the transverse edge of each tooth (see Figure 1) 2.6 back edge the longitudinal edge opposite and paral

、lel to the toothed edge (see Figure 1) 2.7 side one of the flat surfaces between the toothed edge and the back edge (see Figure 1) 2.8 wavy set the wave form projection of groups of teeth from the side of the blade (see Figure 2) 2.9 root radius the radius connecting the face of one tooth and the fl

、ank of the preceding one (see Figure 1) 2.10 flank the surface behind the tooth cutting edge that extends to the root radius (see Figure 1) 2.11 face the surface of the tooth adjacent to the tooth cutting edge on which the chip impinges as it is severed from the work (see Figure 1) 2.12 gullet the s

、pace bounded by the face, root radius and flank of a tooth that permits chip removal (see Figure 1) 2.13 blade length the dimension between the centres of the blade pins, measured along the datum line (see Figure 3) 2.14 overall length the dimension between the ends of the blade, measured along the

、datum line (see Figure 3) 2.15 width the dimension between the toothed edge and the back edge (see Figure 3) 2.16 thickness the dimension between the two sides of the blade (see Figure 3) 2.17 pitch (P) the distance between adjacent tooth cutting edges, measured in millimetres (see Figure 1) 2.18 nu

、mber of teeth (N) the number of complete teeth contained in any25mm length measured along the toothed edge (see Figure 3) 3 Manufacture 3.1 Material. The blades shall be manufactured from a suitable steel so heat treated that they are uniformly hardened along the toothed edge and capable of satisfyi

、ng the tests specified in clause4. 3.2 Form, dimensions and tolerances. The blades shall comply with the dimensions and tolerances given in Table 1 and Table 2. NOTEA pitch of0.8mm 6% (approximately32 teeth per25mm) is recommended.BS6271:1982 2 BSI 12-1999 Table 1 Dimensions of blade 3.3 Tolerance o

、n edge straightness. The toothed edge of the blade shall lie between two straight lines1mm apart which are parallel to the datum line. 3.4 Blade pin dimensions. The blade pin centres shall be not less than2mm from any edge. They shall be equidistant from each blade end within a tolerance of 0.25mm a

、nd equidistant from the tooth cutting edge within the same tolerance. Blade pin dimensions shall be as given in Table 2. Table 2 Dimensions of blade pin The protrusions of the blade pin on each side of the blade shall be not less than0.75mm, and the difference between the protrusions on each side sh

、all be not more than1.5mm. The centre line of any blade pin shall be not more than20 from the perpendicular in relation to the sides of the blade. 3.5 Teeth. The teeth shall be cut regularly and cleanly along one edge of the blade. 3.6 Wavy set. To provide cutting clearance, the teeth shall be in th

、e form of a regular wave and shall protrude by at least0.065mm on each side of the blade (see Figure 2). 3.7 Hardness. Miniature hacksaw blades shall have a toothed edge which is harder than the body below the gullets of the teeth. The minimum hardness at the point of the tooth shall be not less tha

、n817HV. The hardness of the blade body after heat treatment shall be not less than264HV when tested in accordance with4.3. 3.8 Marking. Each blade and/or the package in which it is contained shall be marked or labelled with a distinguishing mark which ensures that the manufacturing origin of the bla

、de can be identified. 4 Performance characteristics and methods of test 4.1 Cutting test. When fitted in a suitable frame, a miniature hacksaw blade shall be capable of cutting off, by hand, five sections from6.5mm diameter untreated high carbon bright steel (silver steel) in accordance with BS1407

、in less than700 total cutting strokes. 4.2 Bend test. Each sample blade shall be capable of being bent around the circumference of a test bar20mm in diameter without breaking (seeFigure 4). 4.3 Hardness test. Hardness testing of hacksaw blades is a specialized technique which shall be carried out by
