22、lier or the user. The insulation coating is likely to be subjected to temperatures above ambient in service or during processing by the purchaser. The time it is held at any given temperature can vary considerably and the properties of an interlaminar insulation in relation to time and temperature a

23、re therefore important. Since the assessment of the properties of insulation coatings at higher temperatures is expensive and time-consuming, these properties are best established in relation to readily measurable properties at ambient temperature. Coated steel will normally be heated for the specif

24、ied time, then retested after cooling to ambient temperature. This guide is therefore prepared on the basis that the temperature capability of a given insulation will normally be evaluated by means of recommended type tests which will provide a common basis for the provision of information on charac

25、teristics by suppliers. It is, however, also necessary to define the equivalent properties at ambient temperature. 1 Scope and object This part of IEC 404, used as a guide, is primarily applicable to the evaluation of interlaminar insulation coatings applied to magnetic steel sheet and strip covered

26、 by the sections of IEC 404-8. This guide defines methods of test for evaluating the properties of interlaminar insulation coatings applied to magnetic steel sheet and strip in the range of temperatures from ambient to800 C as a basis for a type test. It covers the following properties of the materi

27、al: i) adhesion; ii) interlaminar resistance; iii) compressibility/stacking factor. 2 Normative references The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of IEC404. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were

All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this part of IEC404 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. In addition for the purpose of this guide the following definitions apply: 3.1 temperature/time performance designation (T/t) the temperature/time performance designation of a coating in relation to a particular coating property comprises the temperature T C which the

Example: A designation 800/2 for a given property means the coating

NOTEIt is impractical and uneconomic to test coatings continuously. For the purposes of this standard, the concepts of Appendix D of IEC216-1 have been appli

(SeeclauseA.2 of Annex A.) 4.2 Tests for adhesion (based on ISO 1519) 4.2.1 Test specimen The test specimen shall normally be not less than30mm wide, 280mm 2,5mm long and of nominal thickness. It shall be cut parallel to the rolling direction without damage to the coating. F

37、our test specimens shall be cut from the sheet or strip at least40mm from the edges. NOTEA test on insulated magnetic sheet of one nominal thickness may be considered to be representative of coatings applied to sheets of other thicknesses. 4.2.2 Method of test Half of the test specimens shall be tes

38、ted in accordance with Annex B at a temperature of(23 5) C using a30mm diameter mandrel. For material coated on one surface or material coated on both surfaces, two specimens shall be tested, one with one of the surfaces against the mandrel and one with the other surface against the mandrel. The tes

39、t specimens shall be examined in accordance with clauseB.3 of Annex B. There shall be no detachment of the coating of the specimen. The remaining specimens shall be clamped and heated in accordance with one of the methods of clauseA.1 of Annex A. After cooling, the adhesion test shall be performed o

40、n the previously heated test specimens using a mandrel of the same diameter. If the coating becomes detached, the test shall be repeated with a40 mm mandrel and, if detachment still occurs, with a 50 mm diameter mandrel. If there is no detachment of the coating, it shall be considered to have a temp

41、erature/time performance T/t in relation to adhesion. The diameter of the smallest mandrel where no detachment occurs shall be noted. 4.2.3 Test report The test report for each temperature/time performance designation shall contain the following information: i) A description of the coating and the t

42、ype of base material; ii) the atmosphere used during heat treatment; iii) the temperature/time performance designation; iv) the diameter of the smallest mandrel which does not cause detachment after heating; v) the number of this standard and the relevant clause. 4.3 Tests for interlaminar insulatio

Two sets of

44、 such test specimens shall be selected (seeIEC 404-11). 4.3.2 Method of test The first set of test specimens shall be tested at(23 5) C in accordance with either the conventional or the modified Franklin test. For the conventional Franklin test, the mean value of the10readings of insulation resistan

For the modified Franklin test, based on the values of resistance measured at each electrode, the coating shall be assigned values R 16and R 50such that16% of the resistance values are less than R 16and50% are

46、less than R 50 . The coating shall be assigned a resistance grade as defined in Table 1. Table 1 The other set of test specimens shall be clamped and heated in accordance with one of the methods of clauseA.1 of Annex A. The measurement of interlaminar resistance shall be repeated at ambient temperat

For temperatures of500 C and above, the coating shall have a temperature/time performance designation T/t if the coating after heating still meets the manufacturers specified cold resistance grade as defined by Table 1. 4.3.3 Test report The test report for each temperature/time performance designation shall contain the following information: i) a description of the coating and the type of ba
