Terminology and conventions. The text of the International Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as a British

8、Standard without deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those used in British Standards; attention is drawn especially to the following. The comma has been used as a decimal marker. In British Standards it is current practice to use a full point on the baseline as

9、 the decimal marker. The symbol “l” has been used to denote litre (and in its submultiples). In BritishStandards it is current practice to use the symbol “L”. Wherever the words “International Standard” appear, referring to this standard, they should be read as “Section of BS6829”. The footnote to c

10、lause2 should be deleted. With reference to5.2, ISO385 has been revised as ISO385-1:1984, ISO 385-2:1984 and ISO 385-3:1984, the relevant requirements of which are technically equivalent to those in BS846:1985 “Specification for burettes”. Additional information. With reference to clause4, water com

11、plying with grade3 of BS3978 “Specification for water for laboratory use” is suitable. With reference to4.1, the concentration of the hydrochloric acid standard volumetric solution, expressed as an amount-of-substance concentration, is c (HCl) = 0.1 mol/L. In the definition of T in clause8, “normali

12、ty” should be read as“amount-of-substance concentration (mol/L)”. This Section describes a method of test only and should not be used or quoted as a specification defining limits of purity. Reference to this Section should indicate that the method of test used is in accordance with BS6829-1.3. A Bri

16、 Introduction Solutions, pastes and powders of organic surface active substances, in particular those which contain hydrolysable products, can become weakly alkaline as a result of various breakdown reactions. The method specified in this International Standard is based on the determination of the a

17、lkalis in the form of carbonates, bicarbonates, alkali hydroxides or free organic bases such as triethanolamine. 1 Scope and field of application This International Standard specifies a titrimetric method for the determination of the alkalinity of surface active agents in general. This method is app

18、licable only if so indicated in the specific standard for each product; in particular it is not suitable for products containing soaps. 2 Reference ISO 607, Surface active agents Detergents Methods of sample division 1) . 3 Principle Titration of a clear solution of the surface active agent with a s

19、tandard volumetric hydrochloric acid solution, in the presence of methyl orange or bromophenol blue as indicator. 4 Reagents During the analysis, use only reagents of recognized analytical grade and only distilled water or water of equivalent purity. 4.1 Hydrochloric acid, 0,1 N standard volumetric

20、solution. 4.2 Methyl orange or bromophenol blue, 1 g/l solution. 5 Apparatus Ordinary laboratory apparatus, and in particular: 5.1 Conical flask, capacity 250ml, complying with the requirements of ISO1773. 5.2 Burette, capacity 10ml, complying with the requirements of class A of ISO385. 6 Sampling T

21、he laboratory sample of the surface active agent shall be prepared and stored according to the instructions given in ISO 607. 7 Procedure 7.1 Test portion Weigh, to the nearest 0,001g, about 5g of the laboratory sample into the conical flask (5.1). 7.2 Determination Add 50 ml of water to the test po

22、rtion (7.1) and dissolve or homogenize if necessary. Then add2 drops of the indicator solution (4.2) and titrate with the hydrochloric acid solution (4.1) until the end-point is reached. NOTETo facilitate the colour comparison, prepare by the same procedure a solution of about5g of the laboratory sa

23、mple in50ml of water and add2 drops of the indicator solution (4.2). 8 Expression of results The alkalinity of the product, expressed as a percentage by mass of sodium oxide (Na 2 O), is given by the formula where V is the volume, in millilitres, of the standard volumetric hydrochloric acid solution

24、 (4.1) used; T is the exact normality of the standard volumetric hydrochloric acid solution (4.1) used; m is the mass, in grams, of the test portion. 9 Test report The test report shall include the following particulars: a) all information necessary for the complete identification of the sample; b)

25、the reference of the method used; c) the results obtained and the form in which they are expressed; d) the test conditions; e) any operation not included in this International Standard or regarded as optional, as well as any incidents which may have affected the results. 1) In preparation.
