The attention of specifiers is drawn to Appendix A which gives recommendations on the extent of hole formation which can be tolerated with regard to safety, related to the size of the ignition source used. 13、s British Standard describes a method of test for the ignitability of fabrics used in the construction of large tented structures such as marquees, large tents, temporary buildings, awnings and any other structure utilizing large areas of a flexible membrane other than air supported structures. NOTE

、The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the definitions given in BS6373 and BS5852-2 apply. 3 Health and safety of operators NOTEThere is considerable risk involved in this test procedure

、 and it is essential that appropriate precautions are taken. 3.1 Enclosure For safety, tests shall be conducted in an enclosure of at least30m 3volume, so that the tester is not exposed to the fumes. NOTEIt is recommended that the operator does not remain within the test enclosure during the test bu

、t views the test through an observation window. 3.2 Extinguishers Adequate means of extinguishing the samples shall be provided. 4 Apparatus 4.1 Test frame The test frame is illustrated in Figure 1 and consists of metallic rod arranged to represent main and side walls and roof sections of the tent s

、tructure. The frame shall be constructed from steel rod of circular cross section of6mm nominal diameter. The nominal dimensions of the frame shall be as given in Figure 1. The frame shall be constructed slightly smaller than the test specimen (minitent) but by not more than10mm in any dimension. 4.

、2 Ignition sources The range of ignition source used in this test shall be pinewood (Pinus Sylvestris) cribs: ignition sources4 to7 as described in BS5852-2. 5 Conditioning and testing 5.1 Conditioning The fabric specimens to be tested and the cribs shall be conditioned immediately before the test f

、or72h in indoor ambient conditions and then for at least16h in an atmosphere with a temperature of20 5 C and a relative humidity of65 5%. 5.2 Testing Tests shall be performed in a draught-free environment with a temperature of15 C to30 C and a relative humidity of55 20%. 6 Test specimens 6.1 General

、 The test specimen (minitent) shall be representative of the fabric used and all raw edges shall be hemmed. Three specimens shall be tested for each fabric. 6.2 Dimensions The fabric test specimen (minitent) of nominal dimensions shown in Figure 2 shall consist of two side sections and a back and ro

、of section with an overhang to facilitate attachment to the frame. The specimen shall be sewn or welded at the corners denoted in Figure 2 using an overlapping seam and all seams and hems shall be between25mm and50mm in width. The specimens shall fit over the framework without stretching or bulging

、in any area. The front of the specimen shall be open except for a100mm overhang at the top edge to ensure that it is retained on the test frame and adequate tension is maintained. The bottom of each side shall be secured to the frame. 7 Test procedure WARNING. All tests should be conducted in a suit

、able enclosure to ensure the safety of personnel. 7.1 Preparation 7.1.1 Ensure that the means of extinguishment are close to hand (see3.2). 7.1.2 Arrange the fabric specimen over the test frame ensuring that there is no bulging or stretching in any direction. 7.1.3 Place the crib ignition source at

、inside corner F as shown in Figure 2 touching the rear and side walls. 7.2 Procedure 7.2.1 Ignite the crib as described in BS5852-2 and withdraw from the enclosure. 7.2.2 Observe the progress of combustion and record any evidence of unusual behaviour such as the formation of flaming droplets or glow

、ing. 7.2.3 If the specimen is completely consumed or continues to flame after the crib has been completely consumed record that ignition had occurred.BS7157:1989 2 BSI 11-1999 7.2.4 If the specimen is not completely consumed, or does not continue to burn after the crib has been completely consumed,

、record any extent of hole formation assuming the crib to be in corner F as follows. a) Rear section (EFGH). Measure the distance in millimetres from the rear edge EH to a line drawn through the edge of any hole nearest to EH and parallel to it, x. Extent of hole =830x = x 1 b) Side section (BCFG). M

、easure the distance in millimetres from the front edge BC to a line drawn through the edge of any hole nearest BC and parallel to it, y. Extent of hole =830y = y 1 c) Roof section (ABGH). Measure the distance in millimetres from the top edge AB to a line drawn through the edge of any hole nearest AB

、 and parallel to it, z. Extent of hole =1 174z = z 1 If the dimensions of any specimen differ from the nominal values shown in Figure 2 substitute the appropriate figures for those given in the above calculations. 7.2.5 If the specimen is not completely consumed, but does continue to burn after the

Figure 1 Frame dimensions (nominal)BS7157:1989 BSI 11-1999 3 8 Test report The test report shall state that the results relate only to the ignitability of the materials under the part

It shall also include the following information: a) a full description of the test specimen; b) a description of the ignition source(s) used and the result “ignition” or “

、non-ignition” for each source; c) the extent of damage to the test specimen (seeAppendix A); d) the number and date of this British Standard, i.e.BS7157:1989. The report shall also contain any feature of the test specimens or procedures which may have affected the result. These features include: a)

、conditioning of the specimen and ignition source(s); b) special features of burning, e.g.formation of flaming droplets or glowing; c) timing of major events, e.g.burning time of the crib, total time for destruction of test specimen. 33、 BSI 11-1999 Appendix A Recommendations to specifiers A.1 The method of test described in this standard has been devised for use as a type approval test and not as a quality control test. A.2 After extensive ignitability trials employing different size ignition sources it is recommended that an appr
