The following types of hole-saws are

11、 specified: a) toothed hole-saws; b) tipped-toothed hole-saws; c) abrasive grit-edged hole-saws. This British Standard also includes dimensions of hole-saw driving arbors and other accessories. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this do

14、and definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions apply. 3.1 hole-saw cylindrical tool used to cut a circular hole through sheet material NOTE Hole-saws are not intended to cut blind holes. 3.2 cutting edge toothed or gritted edge of the hole-saw 3.3 body part of th

15、e hole-saw between the cutting edge and the cap 3.4 cap closure at the non-cutting end of the body 3.5 teeth serrations formed across the thickness of the hole-saw to provide cutting edges NOTE Teeth are “set” to cut wider than the body thickness. 3.6 body thickness thickness of the material used to

16、 form the body 3.7 tooth pitch distance between the apices of adjacent teeth (in millimetres) NOTE See Figure 1.BS 8416:2002 2 BSI 28 August 2002 3.8 tooth depth distance from the point of a tooth to the bottom of the root radius NOTE See Figure 1. 3.9 Cutting plane plane perpendicular to the axis o

17、f the hole-saw at the point on the cutting edge furthest from the cap 4 Hole-saw types 4.1 Toothed hole-saws Toothed hole-saws shall have teeth formed in a material suitable for their intended use. NOTE Toothed hole-saws typically have a composite “bi-metal” construction consisting of an alloy steel

18、 main body with a narrow high-speed steel edging strip, in which the teeth are formed (see Figure 2). 19、ormed in a material suitable for their intended use. NOTE Tipped hole-saws are typically constructed with tungsten carbide teeth permanently bonded to an alloy steel body. 4.3 Abrasive grit-edged hole-saws Abrasive grit-edged hole-saws shall have abrasive grit particles, suitable for their intended

20、use, permanently bonded to the cutting edge, in addition to or instead of teeth. 5 Design 5.1 Construction The hole-saw body shall be made from alloy steel. The cap shall be permanently bonded (e.g. fusion welded) to the body. Holes or slots shall be provided in the body to facilitate core removal.

21、5.2 Direction of rotation The hole-saw shall be designed to cut when rotated in a clockwise direction viewed from the cap end. 5.3 Heat treatment The hole-saw body shall be hardened and tempered to produce a minimum hardness of 40 HRc /380 Hv in accordance with BS EN ISO 6508-1 or BS EN ISO 6507-1 a

22、s appropriate. Toothed hole-saws shall be hardened and tempered to produce a minimum hardness of 63 HRc /770 Hv in the teeth. 5.4 Finish Hole-saws shall have a protective coating to prevent corrosion. 5.5 Screw threads Screw threads shall conform to BS 1580. 5.6 Morse tapers Morse tapers shall confo

23、rm to BS 1660-1. 5.7 Standard diameters Hole-saw diameters shall conform to the standard sizes specified in Table 1.BS 8416:2002 4 BSI 28 August 2002 Table 1 Standard hole-saw sizes 5.8 Depth The cutting depth of the hole-saw shall be as follows. a) Shallow depth for sheet materials up to 13 mm thic

24、k. b) Standard depth for sheet materials up to 30 mm thick. c) Extra depth for sheet materials over 30 mm thick. For extra-depth hole-saws the maximum cutting-depth shall be specified by the manufacturer. 5.9 Driving arbors interfaces 5.9.1 General The hole-saw shall have an interface for a driving

29、 mm diameter) shall conform to Figure 3. The cap shall be hexagonal or cylindrical. 5.9.3 Interface type II Hole-saw interface type II (32 mm to 152 mm diameter) shall conform to Figure 4. The hole-saw cap shall have a minimum of two drive holes 6.9 mm 0.1 mm diameter on 25.4 mm 0.1 mm pcd., of whic

30、h two shall be diametrically opposite. 5.9.4 Interface type III Hole-saw interface type III (76 mm to 152 mm diameter) shall conform to Figure 5. The cap shall have a minimum of two drive holes 6.9 mm 0.1 mm diameter on 25.4 mm 0.1 mm pcd of which two shall be diametrically opposite. There shall als

31、o be a minimum of two drive holes 8.4 mm 0.1 mm diameter on 50.8 mm 0.1 mm pcd of which two shall be diametrically opposite. 5.9.5 Interface type IV Hole-saw interface type IV (76 mm to 152 mm diameters) shall conform to Figure 6. The cap shall have a minimum of two drive holes 6.9 mm 0.1 mm diamete

32、r on 25.4 mm 0.1 mm pcd. of which two shall be diametrically opposite. There shall also be three drive holes 8.4 mm 0.1 mm diameter equally spaced on a 85.7 mm 0.1 mm pcd. 34、is of the arbor. Table 2 Tolerances for hole-saw concentricity 5.11 Cutting edge variation When mounted on the appropriate hole-saw arbor, the axial deviation of the cutting edge or any tooth, from the cutting plane shall not exceed 0.25 mm when rotated about the axis of the arbor. 6 Hole-saw arbors

35、 6.1 General Hole-saw arbors and arbor extensions shall be manufactured from steel and shall conform to the requirements specified in Table 3. 39、02 12 BSI 28 August 2002 7 Hole-saw accessories 7.1 Pilot drills Pilot drills shall conform to BS 328-1. Pilot drills shall be 6.35 mm ( ) diameter and shall include a means of fixing to the arbor. When assembled to the drive arbor, the overall length and position of the drive flat or notch shall be

40、 such that the pilot drill protrudes beyond the cutting edge of the hole-saw by 10 mm minimum. The dimension D shall conform to Table 3. Pilot drills for use with toothed hole-saws shall be manufactured from high-speed steel, fully heat-treated in the tip to a minimum hardness of 63 HRc/770 Hv, and

41、shall conform to Figure 10 or Figure 12. Pilot drills for use with tipped toothed and abrasive grit-edged hole-saws may be manufactured from solid tungsten carbide or steel with a tungsten carbide tip and shall conform to Figure 11 or Figure 13. 44、rBS 8416:2002 BSI 28 August 2002 17 8 Marking Each hole-saw, hole-saw arbor, pilot drill or hole-saw extension and the package in which it is supplied shall be clearly and permanently marked with the following information: a) the number and date of this British Standard, i.e. BS 8416:2002 1) ; b) th

45、e nominal diameter; c) the maximum depth of cut of the hole-saw or the intended use of the hole-saw arbor, pilot drill or hole-saw extension; d) manufacturers name or trade mark; e) intended use (materials to be cut); f) any restrictions on use (e.g. maximum speed). Where space is limited (i.e. on s

46、mall diameter hole-saws) at least item b should be marked. 9 Instructions for use Each hole-saw, hole-saw arbor, pilot drill or hole-saw extension and the package in which it is supplied shall include full instructions for use. These shall include the following: a) instructions for assembly; b) othe

47、r equipment required; c) advice on the use of the equipment. The instructions shall also include advice, on safety precautions to be taken by the user. 1)Marking BS 8416:2002 on or in relation to a product represents the manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or on behalf of the ma

48、nufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is solely the claimants responsibility.
