Themethodissimpleandstraightforward.Acraterisgroundintothecoatedpartbymeansofarotatingballwettedby anabrasiveslurry.Thethicknessofthecoatingisderivedfromtheballandcraterdimensionalcharacteristics. Contrastbetweenthedifferentmaterialsconstitutingthecoatingandsub
27、strateisaprerequisiteforthemethodto enablethedetectionoftheinterfacebetweenthecoatingandthesurface. 30、erivedfromthesizeofthewearscars(fullcraterandsubstratecrater widths)andtheballdiameter. NOTE1 Differentsetupsoftestrigscanbeused.Theballcanberotatedfreelyonadriveshaft,wherebyitsmassisused toproducethecontactload,oritcanbeclampedinthedriveaxiswhilethespecimenisloadedbymeansofaleversystem. 33、mple, 1mdiamondpastesuspendedinethanolisoftenused. 5.2 Preparationofthetest Makesurethatthespecimenandballareclean.Ultrasoniccleaningfor5mininfreshpetroleumetherfollowedby dryinginambientairisusuallysufficient.Thesuitabilityoftheballshallbedeterminedbymeasuring10diametersat random.Aballshallbereject
34、edifthedifferencebetweenanytwomeasurementsexceeds5m(themaximum allowablevalueofV DWS forgradeG200ballsasgiveninISO3290(E),orifscratchesvisibletothenakedeyeare presentonthesurface.Prepareasuspensionofabrasiveparticlesinadilutingagent.Positionthetestpieceona stablesupport. NOTE1 Theabrasivesuspensions
35、houldbewellstirredtoensureauniformdispersionofabrasiveparticles. Focusthemicroscopeontheconcentricpatternsandifnecessaryadjusttheilluminationtoobtainmaximum contrast. NOTE Usually,anoptical,reflectedlight
