、 3 EN 1334 : 1996 BSI 1996 0 Introduction This European Standard has been prepared in order to establish a method for the determination of the essential dimensions of mattresses, bed frames, divans and bed bases. A large variety of bed designs exists in Europe, so, in order to help manufacturers, re

、tailers and consumers to get the correct fit between the bed components, a nominal dimension, D, has been introduced and tolerances to the nominal dimension are recommended. 1 Scope This European Standard describes methods of measurement for the determination of the dimensions of all types of domest

、ic mattresses, bed frames, divans and bed bases intended for adult size. However, it does not apply to air beds and water beds, nor to mattress pads that are placed on top of the main support mattress. It also includes recommended tolerances based on any nominal dimension, in order to ensure the cor

、rect fit between the bed components. However, specific requirements apply to the dimensions of bed bases for bunk beds and single beds for use at a height of the upper face of the bed base of 800 mm and more above floor level (EN 747-1). 2 Normative references This European Standard incorporates, by

、 dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These normative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text and the publications are listed hereafter. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this European Stand

、ard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references, the latest edition of the publication referred to applies. EN 747-1 Bunk beds for domestic use Part 1: Safety requirements 3 Definitions For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply. 3.1 nominal

、dimension Dimension used by the manufacturer to describe the size of an item. 3.2 unframed slat base Bed base consisting of separate slats flexibly held together, normally by means of textile, rubber or plastic tape. NOTE. When loading one slat, the load is transferred to the support by that slat on

、ly. 3.3 framed base Bed base consisting of slats, springs, etc. which are connected to a structural frame system. NOTE. When loading one component only, e.g. a slat or a spring, the load is distributed by the frame to the support. 3.4 framed sprung mattress Upholstered bed base consisting of springs

、, topped with fillings, on a rigid frame, to be used in a bed frame or free-standing. 3.5 divan base Upholstered bed base used without the need of any framework. It may be constructed with a spring filling or a solid top and may include drawers or storage facilities. 4 General test conditions 4.1 Pr

、eparation The item shall be tested as delivered. If of knock-down type, it shall be assembled according to the instructions supplied with the furniture. Assembly fittings shall be tightened before testing. Where items have been compressed by packaging or storage, they shall be allowed to recover unc

、onstrained for at least 24 h or according to manufacturers recommendations, whichever is the longer. 4.2 Measuring accuracy All forces shall have an accuracy of 5 %, and all dimensions an accuracy of 1 mm. 5 Test equipment 5.1 Support surface Rigid, horizontal, flat. For the mattress measurements, i

、t shall have a smooth melamine face surface. The dimensions of the support surface shall be greater than those of the item under test. 5.2 Side loading pads Rigid, rectangular and vertical, 300 mm in height and 500 mm in width. The loading pads shall be mounted on a horizontal force application devi

、ce which can apply a force as specified in 6.1. Where dimensions, at the bottom of the item, are designed to be smaller than the top, the lower dimension can be measured using loading pads 50 mm in height and 500 mm in width. 5.3 Square aluminium alloy tube 40 mm3 40 mm3 2 mm, approximately 3 m long

、, having a mass of 2,5 kg 12,5 g.Page 4 EN 1334 : 1996 BSI 1996 6 Methods of measurement 6.1 External plan dimensions of mattresses and bed bases For measuring the length and width of mattresses, bed bases and divan bases, place the item on the support surface (see 5.1). Position the loading pads (s

、ee 5.2) as low as possible (in contact with the support surface) to opposite sides of the item and parallel to each other. Apply a horizontal inward force of 15 N to each pad and measure the distance between the loading pads. For mattresses less than 50 mm in height, the force shall be 5 N. For widt

、h determination, three measurements shall be taken. two with the centreline of the loading pads 250 mm from the end of the item; one with the centreline of the loading pads coinciding with the centreline of the item. The width shall be the mean value of the three readings. For length determination,

、the number of measurements depends on the width of the items as follows: for width 1400 mm, follow the procedure for the width dimension. The length shall be the mean value (where relevant) of the two or three readings. The measurement positions for bed bases which fit into a bed frame shall always

、be those giving the maximum dimensions. The length of unframed slat bases shall be measured without load. 6.2 Internal plan dimensions of bed frames Place the item on the support surface (see 5.1). Apply the same procedures as in 6.1, except that the loading pads shall be positioned inside the frame

、 and the forces shall be applied outwards. The measurement positions relevant for the fit of bed bases shall always be those giving the minimum dimensions. NOTE. Due to design, there may be different dimensions for the fit of the mattress and for the fit of the bed base. 6.3 Determination of the hei

、ght of mattresses and divan bases Place the item on the support surface (see 5.1). Rest the aluminium tube (see 5.3) diagonally on the mattress (or divan base) so that the centre of the tube coincides with the geometric centre of the top plane of the mattress or divan base. Measure the distances bet

、ween the tube and the support surface at each corner of the item. Repeat on the other diagonal. The height shall be the mean of the four readings. 7 Recommended tolerances In order to ensure that the bed components fit together, the following tolerances to the nominal dimensions are recommended: 7.1

、 Internal frame dimension Width and length D mm 0 +5 7.2 Mattress to fit into a bed Width and length D mm 220 0 Height D 10 mm or 10 %, whichever is the lower 7.3 Framed bases and framed sprung mattresses Width D mm 220 25 Length D mm 240 210 7.4 Divan bases Width and length D 20 mm Height D 10 mm 7

、.5 Mattresses to be placed on a divan base Width and length D 20 mm Height D 10 mm or 10 %, whichever is the lower 7.6 Unframed slat bases Width D mm 210 25 Length D mm 2100 210 8 Test report The test report shall include at least the following information: a) a reference to EN 1334; b) the unit tes
