、and liquid behaviour 4 Principle The test is carried out using filler aggregate particles smaller than 0,125 mm and bitumen. Duplicatedisks of bitumen and a bitumen/filler aggregate mixture are cast in brass rings. The rings are heatedat a controlled rate in a water bath while supporting a steel bal
、l and the temperature at which thedisks soften enough to allow the steel ball to fall a distance of (25,0 0,4) mm is determined. Themean values of temperature for the rings containing the bitumen and the rings containing thebitumen/filler aggregate mixture are calculated. The difference between the
、two mean temperatures isreported as R mfis the mass of added filler aggregate, in grams; fis the particle density of the filler aggregate, in megagrams per cubic metre;bis the density of the paving bitumen at 25 C, in megagrams per cubic metre. NOTE 1 This gives a mixture by volume of 37,5 % filler
、aggregate and 62,5 % bitumen. NOTE 2 If bis not known, 1,025 Mg/m3can be used in the calculation. Put the dish back into the flask heater and stir the filler aggregate into the bitumen over a period of(150 5) s. Continue to stir for a further (150 5) s with the temperature held at (150 5) C, so that
、 ahomogenous mixture is obtained. BS EN 13179-1:2013 EN 13179-1:2013 (E) 7 Place the other two brass rings on the plate coated with release agent and slightly overfill them withthe mixture of bitumen and filler aggregate. For factory production control purposes both rings of the same type may be tested together. Theprocedure in Clause 7 should be use

Repeat the whole test if the difference between the two temperatures for the softening point of thebitumen and/or the difference between the two temperatures for the softening point of thebitumen/filler aggregate mixture exceeds 3 C. 8 Calculation and expression of results Cal
、culate the mean of the two temperatures of the softening points of the bitumen and thebitumen/filler aggregate mixture in 0,1 C.
