Drums (Fts) Normally flat-ended or convex-ended cylindrical packaging made of metal, fibreboard, plastic or plywood or other suitable materials. This

14、 definition also includes packagings of other shapes (e.g. round tapered-necked packagings, or pail-shaped packagings). Wooden barrels or jemcans are not included in this definition. Durable Marking (Marquage durable) A marking placed on a package that lasts for the duration of the current lading cy

15、cle of the package. For example, a durable marking on a drum which may be removed in the reconditioning process. Fibreboard Box (Caisse en carton dur) A box made of solid or corrugated fibreboard. Inner Packaging (Emballage intrieur) A packaging requiring an outer packaging for transport. Inner Rece

16、ptacle (Rcipient intrieur) A receptacle requiring an outer packaging in order to perform its containment function. Jerricans (Jerrycans) Metal or plastic packagings of rectangular or polygonal cross-section. Maximum Capacity (Contenance maximale) The maximum inner volume of a receptacle or packaging

17、 expressed in litres. Maximum Net Mass (Masse nette maximale) The maximum net mass of contents authorized to be carried in a single packaging or the maximum combined gross mass of inner packagings authorized to be carried in one combination or composite packaging, expressed in kilograms. Nonwoven Fa

18、bric (Tissu non tiss) A textile structure produced by bonding or interlocking fibres (or both) accomplished by mechanical, chemical, thermal or solvent means and combinations thereof. Outer Packaging (Emballage extrieur) The outer protection of a composite or combination packaging together with any

19、absorbent materials, cushioning and any other components necessary to contain and protect inner receptacles or inner packagings. Package (Paquet) The complete product of the packing operation, consisting of the packaging and its contents prepared for transport. Packaging (Emballage) A receptacle and

20、 any other components or materials necessary for the receptacle to perform its containment function. Packaging Design Type (Modle type demballage) The design, size. materials and thickness, manner of construction and packing, but may include various surface treatments. See Appendix C for variations.

21、 Packing Group I (Groupe demballage I) Substances and articles of major danger. Packing Group II (Groupe demballage II) Substances and articles of medium danger. Packing Group III (Groupe demballage III) Substances and articles of minor danger. Permanent Marking (Marquage permanent) A marking placed

22、 on a packaging that is not removed in the reconditioning process. Plastic Fabric (Tissu en plastique) Plastic fabric may be woven or non woven. Woven fabric consists of woven stretch tapes or monofilaments. Receptacle (Rcipient) A containment vessel for receiving and holding substances or articles,

24、al packagings that has been cleaned and prepared. Sift-proof Packagings (Emballages non tamisants) Packagings that are impermeable to dry contents, including fine solid material produced during transport. Textile (Textile) Products made from staple fibres and filaments or yarns or both by interlacin

25、g in any manner including weaving, knitting, tufting and braiding and including such products as cloths, woven goods, knitted goods, nets, webbing and nonwoven fabrics. Reinforced plastics and papers are not included. United Nations (N) Specification Packagings (Emballages de spcification ONU) Packa

26、gings conforming to the requirements of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. Wooden Barrels (Tonneaux en bois) A packaging made of natural wood, of round cross section, with convex wails, consisting of staves and heads and fitted with hoops. PART I DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE 4. PA

27、CKAGING CODES 4.1 The packaging codes to be used in marking shall consist of designations for type, materials and category as given below. 4.1.1 The types of packagings shall be designated by arabic numerals as follows: 1 -drum 2 - wooden barrel 3 - jerrican 5 - bag 6 - composite packaging. The mate

28、riais of construction of packagings shall be designated by capital letters as follows: A - steel (ail types and surface treaiments) B -aluminum C -natural wood F - reconstituted wood 4 - box 4.1.2 D - plywood G -fibreboard H - plastic L - textile M - paper N - metal (other than steel or aluminum) P

29、- glass, porcelain or stoneware. 4.1.2.1 For combination packagings, only the code number for the type of outer packaging (drum, box, etc.) shall be used. 4.1.2.2 For composite packagings, the material designation for the inner packaging shall appear in the second position in the designation, follow

30、ed by the material designation for the outer packaging. 4.1.3 The category of packagings within a type are designated by an arabic numeral in third position (for composite packagings in fourth position) as given in par. 4.4 (e.g. to designate removable head, with inner liner water-resistant, etc.).

31、4.2 The grades of packagings shall be designated by capital letters in marking of the packagings as follows: X - for packagings intended to contain substances or articles in Packing Groups I, II or III; Y - for packagings intended to contain substances or articles in Packing Groups II or III only; Z

33、may follow the packaging code. The letter “V” signifies a special packaging (see Appendix C par. C2). The letter “W signifies that the packaging, although of the same type as indicated by the code, is manufactured to a specification different to that in par. 4.4 and is considered equivalent by the D

34、epartment of Transport (Transport Canada). GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 5.1 Each packaging shall conform to a packaging design type that has been tested and meets the applicable performance requirements set out in secti

40、on 6 and Table 2. 41、.8 5.9 5.10 6. 6. i 6.2 6.3 Exh packaging bearing the markings specified in sections 4 and 8 to indicate conformance with this standard must be capable of meeting the applicable requirements set out in sections 5, 6 and 7 and Table 2. Parts of packagings, including closures and liners in direct cont

42、act with dangerous substances, shall not be affected by chemical or other action of those substances. When necessary, they shall have a suitable inner coating or treatment. Such parts of packagings shall not incorporate constituents liable to react dangerously with the contents either by forming haz

43、ardous products, or by weakening them significantly. The materials used for the packagings shall be of good quality. The strength and thickness of the material and the construction of the packaging shall be appropriate to the capacity and intended use. Coatings or treatments prescribed for safety re

44、asons or to achieve chemical compatibility (par. 6.1) shall retain their protective properties after the required performance tests excluding the drop test. Inner packagings shall be packed in an outer packaging so that under normal conditions of transport they cannot break, be punctured or leak the

45、ir contents into the outer packaging. Inner packagings that are liable to break or be punctured easily, such as those made of glass, porcelain, stoneware or frangible plastic materials, etc., shall be secured in outer packagings with suitable cushioning material. The closures of inner packagings sha

46、ll be designed to prevent leaking or sifting. Any leakage of the contents shall not substantially impair the protective properties of the cushioning material or of the outer packaging resulting in an unsafe condition. Where pressure may develop in a package by the emission of gas from the contents (

47、as a result of temperature increase or other cause), the packaging may be fitted with a vent provided that the gas emitted will not cause danger on account of its toxicity, its flammability, the quantity released, etc. The vent shall be designed so that when the packaging is in the position in which

48、 it is intended to be transported, leakages of liquid and the penetration of foreign substances are prevented under normal conditions of transport. Nails, staples and other closure devices made of metal shall not penetrate to the inside of the outer packaging of explosives, unless provision is made

49、to protect the contents from harmful contact with the metal. Packagings shall be designed so that when closed, the contents cannot ingress between the lining and other parts of the packaging or between different layers of the packaging or into the recesses or seams of joints where such leakage could be hazardous.
