36、y5.3.2.1 A full cross-sectional sample, approximately 25 mm long, shall be cut at least 150 mm from one end of each board used to provide specimens for the tests specified in Clauses 5.5 to 5.7.5.3.2.2 The relative density (i.e., ratio of the oven-dry mass of a wood specimen to the mass of a volume

37、of water equal to the oven-dry volume of the specimen) of each full cross-sectional specimen tested in accordance with ASTM D 2395 shall be 0.49 or greater for the species specified in Clause 5.3.1. The relative density should not exceed 0.57.Notes: (1) Relative density is also known as specific gra

38、vity.(2) To select suitable wood material for evaluation of adhesives intended for bonding wet wood, the relative density based on green volume can be determined and adjusted to oven-dry volume using the guidance in Appendix XI of ASTM D 2395. 40、(1) Wood having fewer than 8 rings per inch (per 25 mm) and meeting the density requirements might not achieve the percentage wood failure when tested.(2) Lumber is considered flat grained when growth rings make an angle of less than 45 with the woods wider face.5.4 Wood moisture content5.4.1 Genera

41、l5.4.1.1 Moisture content shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D 4442.5.4.1.2 The moisture content of the specimens at the time of assembly shall be as specified by the adhesive manufacturer.5.4.2 Moisture content variation5.4.2.1 The variation in moisture content of the individual specimens

42、shall not exceed 3% when their average moisture content is less than 25%.5.4.2.2 When the moisture content of all of the specimens is greater than 25% at the time of bonding, the specimens shall be designated as wet (see Clause 5.3.2.2).5.5 Block shear test and per cent wood failure assessment5.5.1

43、Preparation of test assemblies5.5.1.1 A total of six test assemblies shall be prepared for each of the tests specified in Clauses 5.5.3.2 to 5.5.3.4, three each for the minimum and maximum assembly times recommended by the adhesive manufacturer.5.5.1.2 Billets approximately 19 mm thick 65 mm wide 35

44、0 mm along the grain shall be prepared from lumber of a length suitable for planing and meeting the requirements of Clause 5.3.3. The thickness of the lumber shall be such that the entire surface to be bonded can be planed. Surfaces to be bonded shall not have been sanded and shall be free of contam

Following the second cycle, the specimens s

46、hall be (a) fully submerged in boiling water for at least 4 h; (b) cooled in water at 22 5 C for 1 h; (c) dried at 71 2 C until they are within 6% or less of their original weight; and(d) be conditioned at 20 2 C and 65 5% relative humidity for at least 2 d. Each specimen shall be weighed prior to t

47、esting in shear.Notes: (1) Care should be taken to minimize drying when specimens are transferred to the cool water bath. This can be achieved by gradually replacing the hot water in the boil tank with cool water before removing the specimens.(2) See Annex A for guidance on accommodating interruptio

48、ns to boil-dry-freeze conditioning.(3) Drying the test specimens to 6% or less of their original weight returns the moisture content of specimens to 19% or less after the vacuum-pressure or boil-dry-freeze. This assumes that the original moisture content is 12%.5.5.3.5 Loading rate and measurements5

49、.5.3.5.1 The testing machine shall be equipped with a compression-shearing tool containing a self-aligning seat, as described in ASTM D 2559. There shall be no offset between the inner edge of the supporting surface and the plane of the adjacent edge of the loading surface. The load shall be applied with a continuous motion of the movable head at a rate not exceeding 13 mm/min. The testing machine shall be located in an atmospheric environment such that the moisture content of the specimens is not noticeably altered during testing.Note: The change
