、over a body of water or low-lying terrain, inasmuchas its clear width measures two metres or more at right angles to the abutments.3.1.2 GantryFor the purposes of this standard, a gantry is an overhead structure spanning traffic lanes to which signs orsignals are affixed. Structures cantilevered to

、one or both sides and structures forming a portal over the wholeor part of a carriageway are also considered to be gantries.3.1.3 TunnelA structure for use by vehicular traffic, that is situated below ground or water level and either is enclosed or isopen to a length of 80 m or more. The term tunnel

、 also includes auxiliary structures and installations requiredfor the construction and operation of the tunnel in so far as these form integral parts of the tunnel structure. Moreover, the following structures count as road tunnels if 80 m or more in length:a) partly covered underground or overground

、 traffic structures (e.g. with narrow, elongated openings or gridceilings);b) overground road enclosures (e.g. noise barriers);c) flyover junctions with other highways;d) galleries.3.1.4 Trough structuresTrough structures are retaining structures (including ramps), or caissons comprising retaining w

、alls and a closedsole plate that are sunk into the groundwater.3.1.5 Retaining structuresRetaining structures are highway structures that provide support to the ground, the road construction or a bodyof water and have a visible height of 1,50 m or more.3.1.6 Noise barrierA noise barrier is a wall 2

、m or more in height, that is provided for noise abatement purposes.*) In the following, sometimes referred to as structures.1) Obtainable from Beuth Verlag GmbH, Burggrafenstrae 6, 10787 Berlin, Germany (order no. 11430).Page 3DIN 1076 : 1999-113.1.7 Other major highway structuresFor the purposes of

、 this standard, the term other major highway structures particularly includes structures suchas pipe and conveyor system bridges, reinforced concrete stormwater retention tanks and shafts.3.2 Minor highway structuresThe concept of minor highway structures particularly covers:a) culverts with an open

、ing or a clear width of less than 2 m, measured at right angles to the walls orabutments;b) simple tubular masts or upsweep arm columns to which traffic signs or signals are affixed;c) drainage systems;d) retaining structures of exposed height less than 1,50 m;e) noise barriers of exposed height les

、s than 2 m;f) steep embankments;g) earth structures;h) gabions.4 Documentation for testing and inspection4.1 GeneralThe following documentation shall be provided for testing and inspection purposes:a) register of structures (cf. subclause 4.2);b) structure log (cf. subclause 4.3);c) structure projec

、t file (cf. subclause 4.4).4.2 Register of structuresThe register of structures provides basic details of all the highway structures of relevance to highway safety thatare located along the route and cross the route, even when these are subject to the public obligation of anotherparty. It is usually

、convenient to organize the register according to sections or stretches of road. The register of structures shall include the following minimum information:a) structure number;b) bearer of public obligation;c) section designation;d) nearest town or village;e) position (above/below);f) type of structur

、e;g) main dimensions;h) maintenance obligations;i) loadbearing capacity.4.3 Bauwerksbuch (Structure log)The Bauwerksbuch provides a summary of the key data on the structure and is also used for recording the resultsof tests and inspections carried out. It should be available in time for the initial

、major tests. The scope of data to be recorded in the Bauwerksbuch is laid down in the Anweisung Straeninformationsbank(ASB) Teilsystem Bauwerksdaten. The table of contents of the structure log is reproduced in Appendix B.3 ofthis standard. Using suitable computer software, the structure log is automa

、tically produced from the relevantdata on the structure.NOTE: A core data sheet and a cover sheet for the Bauwerksbuch, taking a bridge as an example, are also given(in Appendix B.1 and B.2 respectively). If no database exists specific to the road, the Bauwerksbuch reproduced in the March 1983 editio

、n ofDIN 1076 may continue to be used.Details of any remedial work, including the time at which it was carried out, shall be entered in the log.Depending on their nature, their location, or particular condition, certain structures may require special testinstructions to be followed. Such instructions

、 shall also be recorded in the log.4.4 Structure project fileStructure project files shall be compiled for all major structures as defined in subclause 3.1. In the case of newconstructions, this shall be done during the construction phase. The files shall contain all data of relevance tothe maintene

、nance and administration of the structure.Page 4DIN 1076 : 1999-11Details of minor structures as defined in subclause 3.2 may be collected in one file. The structure project files shall contain the documentation given in appendix A.5 Testing5.1 GeneralMajor structures shall be tested at regular inter

、vals, always taking into account findings from previous tests.Minor structures not subject to mandatory testing and inspection shall be checked as part of routine highwaysafety checks. It shall be at the discretion of the owner or bearer of public obligation whether such structuresare also to be tes

、ted individually. Test reports as specified in sublause 5.2 to 5.5 shall be compiled, supplemented by sketches and photographs, where required.Where construction work on a structure (e.g. renewal of bridge surfacing) offers the opportunity to test areas thatare normally difficult to access, this oppo

、rtunity shall be taken. The tests shall comprise the following:a) major tests (cf. subclause 5.2);b) minor tests (cf. subclause 5.3);c) ad-hoc tests (cf. subclause 5.4);d) testing in accordance with regulatory requirements (cf. subclause 5.5).Testing shall be entrusted to a competent engineer who is

、also capable of assessing the structural stability andphysical condition of the structures. The engineer shall be able to rely on adequate support staff and equipment.5.2 Major testsA major test shall be carried out prior to acceptance of the construction work, the second before expiry of thedefects

、 liability period. From then on, structures shall be subjected to a major test every six years. In the course of the major test, all elements, including those which are difficult to access, shall be inspected fromtouching distance, using viewing aids, falsework, etc. where required. Coverings over el

、ements (e.g. protectivehoods over cables, packings around bearings, protective cases, manhole tops, etc.) shall be opened. Elementsshall be carefully cleaned prior to testing, in order to expose any hidden damage or defects. The test shall also cover both stationary viewing equipment (e.g. catwalks,

、platforms, ladders and steps)and mobile viewing equipment. In the test report, the damage and defects shall be identified which will require further testing in thesubsequent minor test or at shorter intervals. This applies particularly to damage and defects whose individualor cumulative effect may be

、 to jeopardize the stability, safety or durability of the structure. As a minimum, the major tests shall cover the following:5.2.1 Loadbearing capacityIt shall be checked that the structure is in the condition specified in the structure log. Should any doubts exist, suitable action should be taken (e.

、g. a bridge may need to be downgraded).5.2.2 Nameplates and signsA check shall be made of the nameplates and signs on the structure to ensure the continued applicability of theinformation in respect of its loadbearing capacity, clearance width and height.5.2.3 FoundationsStructures shall be tested f

、or settlement, tilting, underwashing and erosion. Elements located under water or inthe tidal zone shall be inspected. Measurements and gauging may need to be taken in the case of river beds,or any erosion protection checked; in some cases, this may require diving operations. If there are grounds tosuspect chemical pollution of the groundwater or surface water, it shall be investigated whether the water hasany properties detrimental to the structure.5.2.4 Solid componentsMasonry and concrete components shall be examined for cracks, bulging, penetration of moisture
