、oise emitted by machines; airborne noise measurement, enveloping surface method; woodworking machines; special specifications for final trimming machines and edge lipping and banding machines Explanations Multistage edge lipping and banding machines machine the side edges of wood materials in a cont
、inuous passage through the machine, and they also feed in a special edging material which is bonded onto the parent material by glueing. At the same time, cleansing operations or additional working passes are in many instances carried out after the edges have been applied and pressed on. The design
、types of these machines vary therefore as a result of the number of different model modifications which may be involved. It was nevertheless agreed to regard the basic operations characterized by stations A to D in table 1 as representing the standard method for the noise measurement. Only those mac
、hines which are solely capable of glueing on wooden edges shall be tested with this edging material in accordance with the table. All other machines shall be measured during the machining of plastic edges, under identical preconditions in every other respect. Experience has shown that the noise leve
、l increases when a wood edge is fitted, and this fact must therefore be recorded in the test report by a note to this effect. Edge lipping and banding machines do not create a constant noise during operation under load, but instead they generate a sound level which varies during the work cycle, and
、this sound level is determined by the duration of the run-through of the workpiece past the various working stations. Whereas the milling units for the machining of the longitudinal sides are in engagement for a lengthy period (basic noise), the cross-cut sawing process produces a noise of short dur
、ation which is partially superimposed on the basic noise. Exhaustive measurements, including measurements under extreme operating conditions, have indicated however that the cutting noise with its slight impulse content does not influence the mean level Lplrn which is dominated by the milling noise,
、 even when it is determined with the time rating I (IMPULSE). On the strength of these investigations, influences which are likely to alter the mean level Lplm are only to be anticipated when the value measured for the cutting with the time rating S (SLOW) exceeds the value determined for milling (a

Only if the total sound pressure level from milling and cutting should be situated 2 dB or more above the milling noise level rating I, with a specification of th

Operations such as the feed motion drive and the glue stirrer, which function automatically when the machine is running, are of no consequence as far as noise generation is concerned. As r
、egards table 1, it should also be mentioned that the tooling of station A cannot be effected with a uniform com- parison tool, because in many cases the saw blades cannot be replaced by saw blades of a different model, and the saw blade sizes prescribed by the manufacturer must therefore be used. Th
、e specification of a single main operating condition in accordance with DIN 45 635 Part 1 (at present at draft stage, January 1982) is not a sensible proposition, because either no-load noises or machining noises can be determining for the noise radiation, depending on the type of machining involved
、. The adoption of noise abatement measures for the quieter operating condition in each case is also important for the reduction of the noise emission. The incentive to do this should not be ignored. In the case of two-side machines, the relevant position of the side of the machine which is adjustabl
、e in respect of width shall be used as the basis for the selection of the measurement surface. The drive gearbox, which is situated on the out- side and which does not change when the width is adjusted, may be ignored, because it does not contribute to the noise radiation to any great extent.
