、ration of specimens A strip at least 100 mm long and extending over the whole width of the sheet shall be taken from each test piece. Three specimens, each 100 mm 100 mm, shall be taken from each strip, two of them from points 100 mm from each end of the strip and one from the centre (individual spe

、cimens). These three specimens shall be tested together (collective specimen). 4.2 Procedure 4.2.1 The content of soluble matter shall be determined by extraction. Additionally, 4.2.2 shall apply for the examination of uncoated bituminous sheeting. The specimens shall be lightly brushed prior to ext

、raction, in order to remove loosely adhering aggregates. Extraction thimbles as specified in DIN 12449 shall be used for the extraction process. Together with a wad of cotton wool as a stopper, they shall be dried at about 105 C to constant mass, cooled to ambient temperature (18 C to 28 C) in a des

、iccator over a suitable desiccant and, after removal from the desiccator, weighed to the nearest 0,01 g. The three specimens taken as described in 4.1 shall be inserted into the extraction thimble; the thimble shall be sealed with the wad of cotton wool and immediately weighed to the nearest 0,01 g.

、 DIN 52123:2014-06 5 Exhaustive extraction shall then take place in an extraction device, that is to say, until the solvent running off is colourless. For this purpose, the following solvents shall be used: for bituminous sheeting: trichlormethane, trichlorethylene, toluene (methylbenzene) or xylene

、, for sheeting of polymer bitumen: toluene or xylene. When the solvent has dripped off, the thimble is to be dried at about 105 C to constant mass and, after being cooled in the desiccator, is to be reweighed at ambient temperature to the nearest 0,01 g. The loss of mass in grams (g) shall be multip

The quantity of impregnating material determined shall be expressed as a mass

、fraction (%) of the mass of fibre felt extracted. 5 Testing of the base 5.1 Mass per unit area A soft paintbrush shall be used to remove any particles adhering to the three specimens of base material remaining after the determination of the content of soluble matter as described in Clause 4 or in An

、nex A. The specimens shall then be dried in an open weighing glass of 60 mm diameter and 120 mm height, at about 105 C until constant mass is reached and, after cooling in a desiccator, weighed in a closed weighing glass to the nearest 0,01 g. After the weighing glass has been opened with a pair of

、tweezers and the three specimens taken out with tweezers, the weighing glass and lid shall be reweighed. The difference between the two weighings is the weighing result in g, which shall be multiplied by 100/3 to give the mean mass per unit area of the base, in g/m2. In the case of fibre felt, 9 % i

、s to be added to the mass per unit area ascertained, to allow for the normal moisture content of fibre felt. The result is the mean mass per unit area of the processed fibre felt. In the case of hessian, 16 % is to be added to the mass per unit area ascertained, to allow for the normal moisture cont

、ent of hessian. The result is the mean mass per unit area of the processed hessian. In the case of textile glass fabric obtained by extraction, the mass determined after drying and subsequent calcination (for 30 min at about 600 C) shall be deemed to be the mean mass per unit area of the processed r

、aw unfinished glass fabric. 5.2 Sett of hessian The sett shall be determined in the direction of the warp and weft over a length of 100 mm, as specified in DIN EN 1049-2. 6 Determination of the granulometric composition of the mineral surfacing The aggregates obtained in the course of determining th

、e content of soluble matter in accordance with Clause 4 and Annex A shall be placed on a set of sieves consisting of metal wire cloth test sieves of sizes 1 mm, 0,71 mm, 0,25 mm and 0,09 mm as specified in DIN ISO 3310-1. The percentage of the individual particle sizes in the mineral surfacing shall be calculated and stated to the nearest 0,5 %. Par

、ticle size 0 to less than 0,09 mm is to be regarded as a filler. DIN 52123:2014-06 6 7 Determination of mineral fillers in the covering This test shall be carried out only if the quantity of filler determined in accordance with Clause 6 is greater than 10 % of the content of soluble matter as descri

、bed in 6.2. About 5 g of the filler that has been separated as specified in Clause 6 by sieving with the 0,09 mm wire cloth test sieve to DIN ISO 3310-1, and that has been dried at (105 2) C to constant mass, are weighed to the nearest 0,001 g, placed in a DIN 12331 H 600 beaker and mixed with 200 m

、l of hydrochloric acid having a 5 % mass fraction of w(HCl) and a density 20= 1,023 g/cm3. The beaker shall be allowed to stand for about 24 hours, while being swirled frequently. The undissolved fraction shall then be collected on a weighed filter. Following rinsing out with distilled water, the re

、sidue, together with the filter, shall be dried at (105 2) C to constant mass, weighed and the mass of the filter deducted. The content of soluble matter shall be calculated from the residue on the filter and expressed as a mass fraction of the initial mass. 8 Test report The test report shall conta

、2123:2014-06 7 Annex A (normative) Alternative method of determining the content of soluble matter A.1 General The alternative test procedure described below for determining the content of soluble matter is especially suitable for use with sheeting having thicker covering layers. A.2 Preparation of

、specimens A strip at least 200 mm long, and extending over the whole width of the sheet, shall be cut out of each of the test pieces taken as described in Clause 3. Three specimens, each measuring 200 mm 100 mm, shall be taken from each of the strips, one specimen from points 100 mm from each end of

、 the strip and one specimen from the centre of the strip. These three specimens shall be tested together. A.3 Procedure The content of soluble matter is determined by extraction. Prior to extraction, the specimens shall be lightly brushed in order to remove loosely adhering aggregates. Thereafter, t

、hey are weighed to the nearest 0,01 g and exhaustively extracted. For this purpose, the following solvents shall be used: for bituminous sheeting: trichlormethane, trichlorethylene, toluene (methylbenzene) or xylene, for sheeting of polymer bitumen: toluene or xylene. A beaker of 5 000 ml nominal ca

The three specimens to be extracted shall be placed in a test frame made, for example, from wire grating and providing

、a base clearance of about 80 mm, and inserted into the extraction apparatus. The test frame consists of 3 parallel grids, inclined at an angle of about 70 and secured to a base grating. About 500 ml to 700 ml of the solvent shall be used for extraction. Extraction is concluded when the solvent dripp

、ing off is virtually colourless. Any surfacing material still adhering to the specimens of base material shall then be washed off with a washing bottle, after which they shall be carefully taken out of the extraction apparatus with crucible tongs. The remaining solution, together with the aggregates

、, shall be poured through a test sieve of metal wire cloth having a 0,09 mm wire sieving medium complying with DIN ISO 3310-1, followed by separation in a concurrent centrifuge. The centrifuge used shall be sufficiently effective to ensure that the residue on ignition of the recovered binder does no

、t exceed a mass fraction of 1 %. After the extracted base material, the surfacing material and the fillers which have been centrifuged have been dried, the loss of mass in g shall be multiplied by 50/3, giving the content of soluble matter per unit area, in g/m2. When uncoated bitumen sheeting compl

、ying with DIN 52129 is tested, the quantity of impregnating compound ascertained shall be stated as a mass fraction of the extracted fibre felt. 1)Obtainable through retailers specialized in equipping laboratories for earthworks and asphalt road construction.DIN 52123:2014-06 8 Bibliography DIN EN 1
