、Principles 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions in DIN 685-1, DIN EN 818-1 and DIN EN 1677-1 and the following apply. 3.1 chain shortener forged component for modifying the length of the chain strands to the required effective length 3.2 shortening clu
、tch chain shortener which accommodates the chain link standing upright on the curved section in a clutch-shaped recess 3.3 shortening hook chain shortener which accommodates the upright chain link in a slot-shaped recess 4 Hazards Unintended release of a load, or release of a load due to failure of
、chain shorteners puts at risk, either directly or indirectly, the safety or health of those persons within the danger zone. DIN 5692:2011-04 5 In order to provide the necessary strength and durability of the chain/chain shortener system, this standard gives requirements for design, manufacture and t
、esting to ensure the specified levels of performance are met. Since failure can be caused by the incorrect choice of grade and specification of the chain shortener, this standard also gives requirements for marking and the manufacturers certificate. Mounting and/or use which is contrary to the inten
、ded purpose specified in Clause 9 can also result in failure. Risk of injury due to sharp edges, sharp angles or rough surfaces when handling is also covered by this standard. Those aspects of safe use associated with good practice are given in DIN EN 818-6. The requirements given in the standard re
、sult from the risk assessment to be carried out as specified in DIN EN ISO 14121-1 and the principles for design given in DIN EN ISO 12100-1 and DIN EN ISO 12100-2. 5 Requirements 5.1 General The requirements of DIN EN 1677-1 shall be met. Chain shorteners shall only be provided for one nominal chai
、n thickness. NOTE Nominal sizes of Grade 8 chain slings are listed in DIN EN 818-2. 5.2 Design The design of the chain shorteners shall satisfy the following requirements: a) The contact surfaces of the force-transmitting components of the chain shorteners shall be adapted to the shape of the chain
、links. These areas shall not contain any sharp edges which constitute a hazard to the chain or the chain shortener. b) The type tests of the chain links additionally subjected to bending and/or shear in the chain shortener shall evidence a minimum breaking force as specified in 6.2.2.2 in interactio
、n of the chain/chain shortener. c) Unintended release of the chain links from the chain shortener shall be prevented by technical means, e.g. by the shape and depth of the chain link seat as specified in 5.3 for shortening hooks without a mechanism, or by a mechanism to prevent unintended release of
、 the chain links. d) If there is the risk of mounting the chain links into the chain shorteners incorrectly (e.g. as may be the case with shortening clutches) a mechanism to prevent unintended release of the chain links is compulsory. 1) The mechanism to prevent unintended release of the chain links
、 shall not impede insertion of the chain links into the chain shortener nor their removal from the chain shortener. As the design of this mechanism is the responsibility of the manufacturer and can vary in design, the following general requirements are specified for the design and performance test.
、The proper functioning of the mechanism preventing unintended release of the chain shall always be maintained even under the following circumstances: After prolonged use of the chain shortener and resulting effects of corrosion and soiling. DIN 5692:2011-04 6 The mechanism shall be sufficiently stab
、le to ensure that its functioning is not adversely affected, for example, if it is struck by the shortened chain. It shall be possible to operate the mechanism by hand without any auxiliary means. 2) The given direction of load shall be clearly indicated either by the shape of the chain shortener or
、 marking, and shall remain in evidence when the chain is mounted. 5.3 Dimensions of the force transmitting areas The width of the groove (see Figure 1 and Figure 2) shall be selected to suit the nominal size of the chain links so as to ensure a minimum breaking force as specified in 6.2.2.2. The wid
、th of the recess (see Figure 1) shall be selected to suit the outer width of the chain links so as to ensure a minimum breaking force as specified in 6.2.2.2. The chain contact surface (see Figure 2) shall be selected to suit the length of the chain links so as to ensure a minimum breaking force as
、specified in 6.2.2.2. The minimum depth of the recess (see Figure 1) of shortening clutches shall be at least three times the nominal size of the corresponding chain. The depth of the recess is the distance between the lowest point at which the curved section of the chain link makes contact and the
、straight line formed between both upper contact points between the chain link and the recess when the mounted chain link is pressed against the front of the recess in the wrong direction of load and thus subjected to a bending load at these points. The depth of the groove (see Figure 2) of shortenin
、g hooks with a mechanism to prevent unintended release of the chain shall be at least four times the nominal size of the corresponding chain. Without this mechanism the depth of the groove shall be at least five times the nominal size of the corresponding chain. NOTE Nominal sizes of Grade 8 chain s

、 safety requirements 6.1 Qualification of personnel All testing and examination shall be carried out by a competent person. 6.2 Type tests and assessment of chain shorteners 6.2.1 General The type test shall be carried out in compliance with DIN EN 1677-1:2009-03, 6.2.1, 6.2.4 and 6.2.5. The fatigue
、 test shall be performed when the chain is correctly mounted. One sample of each design shall be visually examined for conformity to the requirements of 5.2 a). The acceptance criteria comply with DIN EN 1677-1:2009-03, 6.2.6. The following additional tests are necessary to ensure that the chain sho

DIN 5692:2011-04 8 6.2.2 Additional test 6.2.2.1 Dimension testing The following dimensions shall be checked: width of the groove; depth of the groove; width of the recess; depth of the recess. 6.2.2.2 Static tensile test to examine the effect of
、the chain shortener on the corresponding chain a) Static tensile test on one chain lot used for testing Chains for testing shall be taken from one manufacturing lot of which the average actual breaking force has been determined in three preliminary tests. b) Static tensile test with correctly mounte
、d chain Three static tensile tests shall be carried out for each chain shortener and code number with chains from the previously identified chain lot in a shortened condition. The average value of the breaking force from three tests shall be at least 95 % of the average value of the chain lot breaki
、ng force determined in accordance with a). If the average value of the breaking force from three tests is below 95 % of the average value of the breaking force of the chain lot determined in accordance with a), two substitute tests shall be carried out. The results of the repeat tests shall meet the
、 breaking force requirements. If this requirement is not met, the code number of this chain shortener shall be deemed as non-compliant with this standard. NOTE The mechanical test conditions for the chain shorteners are such that the chain may fail before the minimum breaking force is reached. c) St

If this requirement is not met, the code number of this chain shortener shall be deemed as non-compliant with this standard. 6.3 Manufacturing test regime and acceptance criteria The manufacturing test regime and the acceptance criteria s

In addition the stipulations of 5.2 d) 2) shall be observed. 8 Manufacturers certificate The manufacturers certificate shall comply with DIN EN 1677-1:2009-03, Clause 8. DIN 5692:2011-04 10 9 Instructions for use Instructions for use shall be provided in compliance with DIN EN 818-6. In addition a warning shall be included indicating the dangers resulting from incorrect mounting of the chain, for example in the line of force shown in Figure 3.
