1、 A-A-59837 October 8, 2009 COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION CRAMPON, MOUNTAINEERING This commercial item description is approved for use by the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia and is available for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. 1. SCOPE. This commercial item descript

2、ion covers the requirements for crampons which are used when walking on ice and hard packed snow, or ascending and descending steep ice faces, to prevent slipping. 2. CLASSIFICATION. The crampons will be furnished in the following types: 2.1 Types Type I Basic Crampon Type II Advanced Crampon 2.2 Si

3、zing. The crampons will be furnished in a one-size fits all (OSFA) design that accommodates US sizes 4 through 16 while meeting the standards in the description. 3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS. The crampons shall be as light-weight as possible, while meeting the standards described in the description. T

4、he crampon shall have an adjustable center hinge to adjust the length of the crampon. The crampon shall be of a semi-rigid design (i.e., two plates). The crampon shall be equipped with a bar that links the two plates together. The crampons shall be designed for both snow and ice, and shall withstand

5、 occasional rock use. The crampons shall be provided with anti-balling plates which prevent the buildup of snow under the crampon. The crampons shall be provided with a universal strap system which is compatible with all types of mountaineering boots and combat boots by means of a non-slip, semi-rig

6、id molded cup system for the heel and toe. The crampon design shall provide ease of use with typical combat gloves while meeting the standards in the description. The crampon shall be furnished with ten (10) points; eight

9、 (8) vertical points protruding under the crampon and two (2) forward front points. The two forward front points shall be horizontally oriented for maximum purchase in hard packed snow and soft ice. A minimum of two (2) of the vertical points shall be oriented perpendicular to the crampon rails to p

10、revent shearing in soft snow and provide security while descending. The crampon shall be provided with an extender bar to cover larger size boots if the standard bar doesnt accommodate all sizes. 3.2 Type II. The crampon shall be furnished with twelve (12) points: eight (8) vertical points protrudin

11、g under the crampon, two (2) semi forward front points, and two (2) forward front points. The two forward front points shall be vertically oriented for maximum purchase in hard ice. The crampon shall be provided with extender bars to cover larger size boots if the standard bars dont accommodate all

12、sizes. 3.3 Color. The crampons shall be provided in a low reflectance, matte finish and provide low contrast with typical use terrain. 3.4 Materials. 3.4.1 Basic Material. The crampon shall be constructed of heat-treated 4130 steel. 3.5 Tests. The crampons shall meet International Mountaineering and

13、 Climbing Federation Union Internationale des Associations dAlpinisme - (UIAA) Standard 153. 3.6 Workmanship. The finished crampon shall conform to the quality of product established by this document. The occurrence of defects shall not exceed the contractors own quality assurance standards and the

14、quality assurance standards defined in the technical data in the solicitation and/or contract. 3.7 Service life. The crampon shall have no unexpected material or component failures during a continuous one-year cycle. The crampon shall have no unexpected material or component failures during periodic

15、 use over a five year period. 3.8 Labels/barcoding/instruction slip. If applicable, all labeling, barcoding and instruction slip requirements shall be as specified in the solicitation or contract (see 7.2). 4. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials t

16、o the maximum extent practicable, in accordance with paragraph 23.403 of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR). 4.1 Recycled, Recovered, or Environmentally Preferable Materials. Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials should be used to the maximum extent possible, provided th

17、at the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance requirements and promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs. 5. PRODUCT CONFORMANCE PROVISIONS. The products provided shall meet the salient characteristics of this commercial item, conform to the producers own drawings, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices, and be the same product offered for sale in the commercial marketplace. The Government reserves the right to r

19、equire proof of such conformance. 5.2 Visual Examination. Each crampon, mountaineering shall be examined for the following defects as listed in Table I: TABLE I.
