、1. SCOPE This standard defines the parameters used to describe the electrical characteristics of Sonic Wire Delay Lines with Magnetostriction Transducers for pulse applications. Methods for measuring these parameters are also prescribed. 2. DEFINITIONS OF TERMS AND SYMBOLS 2.1 Impedance 2.1.1 Source

、 Impedance - The impedance of the pulse source as seen by the delay line input terminals. 2.1.2 Terminating Impedance - The impedance of the load as seen by the delay he output terminals. 2.1.3 Input Impedance - The impedance seen looking into the delay line input terminals. 2.1.4 Oatput Impedance -

、 The impedance seen looking into the delay line output terminals. The following definitions are based on the most elementary time response, the response to a single step input of current. 2.2 Output Pulse Amplitude The peak values of the two major excursions (Ep1 and Ep2 in Figure 1) of the output v

、oltage doublet resulting from a step input of current. 2.3 Output Pulse Duration The time (tl) from the 10% value of the first portion of the output doublet to the zero crossing plus the time (b) from the zero crossing to the 10% value of the second portion of the output doublet. See Figure 1. O 2.4

、 Index of Resolution The time spacing (tR) between the occurrences of Epi and EP2. See Figure 1. 2.5 Delay Time The time ( td) from the 50% value of the input current step to the zero crossing of the output doublet. 2.6 Temperature Variation 2.6.1 Of Delay Time - Change in delay time over a specific

、 temperature range. 2.6.2 Of Output Pulse Amplitude - Change in output pulse amplitude over a specific tem- perature range. 2.7 Noise ( purious Response) Any output response occurring outside the time covered by 1.2 tl and 1.2 t2 (see Figure 1). The maximum peak noise response will be designated Ex.

、 2.8 Signal to Noise Ratio The ratio of either Epi or Ep2 to EN. 2.9 Input Power - The power expended in driving the delay line. / - /- o EIA 293 64 m 3234b00 00b4058 T m RS-293 Page 2 2.10 Output Power The power dissipated in the terminating network (load). 2.11 Delay Line Loss The ratio of input t

、o output power. 3. MEASUREMENTS 3.1 Impedance All impedances shall be measured at the frequency I/ ( 2tB). All of the following parameters are determined either directly or through calculation from observa- tion of the input and output waveforms on an oscilloscope, while operating the delay line in

、the test circuit of Figure 2. In this test circuit the Source Impedance shall be resistive and equal to RI. The Terminating Impedance shall be equivalent to the parallel combination of Rz and Cz, including the input impedance of the measuring equipment. All measurements shall be performed with a 10%

、 to 90% rise time (tri) of the input current step not exceeding 0.2 tR. 3.2 Output Pulse Amplitude Epl and Ep2 are determined by direct observation (see Figure 1). 3.3 Output Pulse Duration ti and tz are determined by direct observation (see Figure I). 3.4 Index of Resolution tR is determined by dir

、ect observation (see Figure 1). 3.5 Delay Time The Delay Time shall be measured by comparing with a time reference the period between the 50% amplitude point on the input current step to the zero crossing of the output voltage doublet. The setup shall provide an over-ail accuracy of delay time measu

、rement which is better than 0.1 tR. 3.6 Temperature Variation 3.6.1 Of Delay Time - The maximum deviation of delay time over a specified temperature range from the delay time measured at 25 degrees C. Resolution and stability of the measuring setup must be commensurate with the deviation of delay ti

、me. 3.6.2 Of Output Pulse Amplitude - The maximum deviation of amplitude over a specified temperature range from the value measured at 25 degrees C. 3.7 Noise (Spurious Response) 3.7.1 Single Step Response - The maximum peak noise voltage (EN) measured at a step repetition rate which does not affect

、 the noise waveform. 3.7.2 Multiple Step Response - The maximum peak noise voltage (EN) measured at one (or several) specified sequence (5) of input current steps. 3.8 Signal to Noise Ratio The ratio of either Epl or Epz to EN. 3.9 Input Power The Input Power is 12R1, where I is the amplitude of the

、 input current step. 3.10 Output Power The Output Power is either Epl2/R2 or EP2/Rz, whichever is specified. 3.31 Delay Line Lose The Delay Line Loss is the ratio of input to output power.
