、- CAVITY LEAKAGE BONDING INTEGRITY TEST PROCEDURE FOR ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS (From EIA Standards Proposal No. 5205, formulated under the cognizance EIA CE-2.0 Committee on National Connector Standards, and was previously published in EIA-364-78A.) 1 Introduction 1.1 Scope This standard establishes a

、technique for evaluating the sealing integrity of the contact cavity walls of an environmentally sealed electrical connector by detecting leakage between a given contact cavity and those adjacent to it. This technique is suitable for application at the onset of a series of environmental tests (e.g.,

、 qualification or periodic inspection) to evaluate the soundness of the product before the start of test. 1.2 Applicable document The following document forms a part of this standard to the extent indicated herein. In the event of conflict between the requirements of this standard and the referenced

、 document, this standard takes precedence. 1.2.1 Military Specification MS27448: Plug, End Seal, Electrical Connector 2 Test resources 2.1 Equipment 2.1.1 A source of clean filtered air or nitrogen, regulated within ilopascals (0.5 pound per square inch) of the specified test pressure, and equipped

、with a suitable pressure indicator. 2.1.2 A hollow test probe suitably shaped to affect a seal against the unsealed end of a contact cavity under test while applying pressure inside the cavity. 2.1.3 A detector capable of sensing loss of pressure from the cavity under test. This detector may be as s

、imple as a container of distilled water in which a leaking cavity would produce a stream of air bubble, or may involve a flow-sensitive transducer. If a flow-sensing transducer is employed, it shall be capable of detecting a leak rate of 1.6 x 104 cubic millimeters (1 cubic inch) of air per hour. EI

、A-364-78B Page 2 3 Test specimen 3.1 Description The test sample shall consist of an unmated, unwired plug or receptacle connector. 3.2 Preparation 3.2.1 Each contact cavity shall be sealed at one end with a suitable seal selected from those defined in MS27488, to withstand a pressure differential o

、f one atmosphere. Care shall be exercised to assure that the sealing technique chosen does not augment the native sealing capability of the cavity under test. 3.2.2 When installing sealing plugs in connector or module grommets; the head of the sealing plug shall be inserted first. The sealing plug s

、4.1 Adjust the pressure regulator to produce a test pressure of 10.34 kilopascals 3.44 kilopascals (1.5 pounds per square inch 0.5 pound per square inch). At set pressure, verify that test system does not leak prior to performing contact cavity leakage testing. 4.2 Insert the test probe into a conne

、ctor contact cavity; apply the test pressure for 5 seconds to the cavity while observing the leakage detector for evidence of pressure loss from within the test cavity. 4.3 Unless otherwise specified as defined in 2.1.3, any evidence of pressure leakage from the cavity under test shall constitute a

、failure of the cavity integrity leakage test. 4.4 Repeat this procedure until all of the connector cavities have been pressure-tested, unless otherwise specified in the referencing document.
