、voltage and/or temperature limits. In general, as voltage increases, capacitance and power factor increase. Also, as temperature increases, capacitance and power factor increase. The maximum temperature of these capacitors is affected by the condition of air circulation (from dead air condition to a

、 maximum), by radiated and/or conducted heat, altitude and any other ambient conditions in addition to the heat developed in the capacitor by the application of voltage and the flow of current. The application of a capacitor to a motor must include consideration of these factors. When the motor and

、capacitor are enclosed in other equipment, the temperature of a capacitor must be considered with the equipment exposed to the highest ambient temperature at which it is designed to operate and after the equipment has reached its maximum operating temperature. 17.2 Mounting EIA-463-B Page 13 Vertica

、l mounting of the capacitor with the terminals up is recommended; however, horizontal mounting is acceptable. Vertical mounting with terminals down is not recommended and could impair the operation of the pressure relief vent. 17.3 Low temperature When these capacitors are exposed to reduced tempera

、ture down to -40C and are called on to start a motor, they will respond quickly. At -40C the capacitance is low and power factor high so the application of the voltage to the capacitor causes it to heat up internally in a short time to the point that the capacitance is high enough at a low enough power factor for the motor to start. 17.4 Duty cycle 17.4.1 The duty cycle of an ac motor start capacitor may be determined by dividing the capacitors on-ti
