、, particularly for the testing of components, has been witnessed by the inclusion of a “climatic sequence“ in IEC 68-1 (see clause 7 with guidance in annex B). With the increasing importance of the IEC Quality Assessment System for Electronic Com- ponents (IECQ) it has become necessary to define the

、 test sequence more precisely than could be done in clause 7 of IEC 68-1 with the object of providing for satisfactory reproducibility of the test. This International Standard describes in detail a composite test specifying a “climatic sequence“ for specimens of products, primarily components, that

、is based on clause 7 of IEC 68-1, and it includes guidance in informative annexes for specification writers and those performing the test. NOTE - Test UABDM is a “composite test“ as defined in IEC 68-1 rather than a sequence as defined in the same standard. Because of the well-established use of seq

、uence“ in references to clause 7 of IEC 68-1 It has been decided that “sequence should continue to be used in referring to the operations in this composite test. 16、is International Standard provides standard composite test methods for determining the suitability of a specimen when subjected to environmental conditions consisting of a sequence of temperature, humidity and, where required, low air pressure environmental stresses. The order of application of the

、stresses and conditions for the change from one step to the next have been chosen to accelerate and amplify degradation mechanisms of the same type as those observed under natural climatic conditions. NOTE - Environmental conditions occurring in nature are classified in IEC 721-2 and IEC 721-3. This

、 standard may be applied to other electrotechnical products when the degradation me- chanisms are the same and the specified requirements for testing can be satisfied. In other cases, it may form a basis for the writing of a similar test. In this test, specimens are exposed to environmental tests in

、 a standard order and categorized according to the basic code defined in Appendix A of IEC 68-1 except that the third group of digits is used as an indication of the number of cycles in Step 5 of the damp heat cyclic Test Db according to clause 6 in IEC 68-2-30. In the climatic categories 4456, 40/-

、/-, etc., in this standard the dashes may be replaced by any of the standard values appropriate to the space as in the following examples: 55/100/56, 25/085/56, 40/085/21. Where any modification is necessary, the relevant specification shall provide the necessary information for each step in the sel

、ected method (see clause 8). This test is frequently specified to follow other tests involving mechanical stress, for example tests for robustness of terminations, solderability, shock and vibration, as a means of determining whether the sealing of the specimen has been damaged. 2 Normative referenc

、e terms used are generally defined In IEC 68-5-2. 4 Test apparatus The test apparatus is that required for carrying out each of the individual tests, including variants and methods, with the required severities prescribed for the sequence. When using a single test chamber in which the conditions spe

、cified for the different steps in the sequence are successively established, special care is necessary (see clause 8.3 of annex B). The use of a test chamber with automatic transfer of the specimen between compartments can, in general, be regarded as equivalent to the use of separate test chambers.

、Also, with test chambers with automatic transfer, it should be ensured that the recovery conditions at the end of each step are satisfied, particularly for step 2 of method 1 (see 8.2.2). M 3404583 0089417 T23 Page 7 EN -8-2-61 : 1993 5 Severltles The seventy is defined by the temperature of the dry

、 heat test (4.1 of IEC 68-2-2), the temperature of the cold test (4.1 of IEC 68-2-I), the air pressure and the duration of exposure, if the optional “low air pressure“ step is required (clause 4 in IEC 68-2-13), and finally, the number of damp heat cycles according to 8.2.5 of this standard. 6 Pre-c

、onditioning Unless otherwise prescribed by the relevant specification, pre-conditioning is required. The duration of preconditioning shall be at least 1 h under standard atmospheric conditions for testing. 7 Initial measurements The specimen shall be submitted to the visual, dimensional and function

、al checks prescribed by the relevant specification. 8 Testing 8.1 G81?8fa/ description Three methods are standardized. Method 1 is preferred and shall always be used unless otherwise prescribed by the relevant specification. In method 1 the specimen is first exposed to a high temperature and then to

、 a cycle of damp heat. The damp heat cycle is immediately followed by a low temperature test so that any moisture which has entered either the specimen or surface cracks in Its seals will be frozen and cause further damage. Low air pressure (optional) is then followed by further exposure to cyclic d

、amp heat conditions (except for climatic categories -/-/O4 and -Hl O) to complete the check on the sealing of the specimen. Method 2 defines a more severe test which interposes a low temperature test between each of the five final damp heat cycles (climatic category -/-/56 only). Method 3 is intende

、d to provide a short climatic sequence for lot by lot acceptance testing, applicable, where prescribed by the relevant specification, to electronic components of assessed quality. Page 8 EN 60068-2-61 : 1993 8.2 Method 1 This method contains five steps (see figure 1) of which one (step 4 in 8.2.4) is optional. 8.2.1 Step 1: Dry heat a) The specimen shall be exposed to the dry heat test Ba according to clause 7 of IEC 68-2-2 with a duration o

、f exposure of 16 h f 0,5 h. The temperature shall be prescribed by the relevant specification, preferably by stating the climatic category. The relevant specification may prescribe intermediate measurements at the end of the exposure to high temperature according to clause 8 of IEC 68-2-2; the time

、taken by these measurements does not form part of the duration of exposure. b) The specimen shall then be removed from the chamber and at least 1 h shall be allowed for recovery and the completion of step 1. The total duration of step 1 is 24 h f 0,5 h. c) An interval not exceeding 72 h (3 days) is

、permitted before proceeding to step 2. The conditions during this interval are those for recovery, that is, the standard atmospheric conditions for testing. 8.2.2 Step 2: Damp heat a) Specimens shall be exposed to one cycle of the damp heat cyclic test Db according to clause 6 of IEC 68-2-30. Unless

、 otherwise prescribed by the relevant specification variant 1 shall be used. The upper temperature shall be 55 OC unless otherwise prescribed by the relevant specification. b) Recovery shall then take place according to clause 8 of IEC 68-2-30. c) Immediately after the recovery period, the specimen

、shall be subjected to step 3. 8.2.3 Step 3: Cold a) The specimen shall be exposed to the cold test Aa according to clause 7 of IEC 68-2-1. The temperature shall be prescribed by the relevant specification, preferably by stating the climatic category, with a duration of exposure of 120 min f 5 min. T

、he relevant specification may prescribe intermediate measurements at the end of the exposure to cold according to clause 8 of IEC 68-2-1 ; the time taken by these measure- ments does not form part of the duration of exposure. b) The specimen shall then be removed from the chamber and recovery shall

、take place according to clause 9 of IEC 68-2-1. c) An interval not exceeding 72 h (3 days) is permitted before proceeding to step 5. The conditions during this interval are those for recovery; however, when prescribed by the relevant specification, the optional step 4 shall be performed during this
