、ge 5 EN 62005-41999 4 Types of screens Screens are specific conditions designed to address known and understood failure mechanism(s). In that context, they can be any or all of the types shown below. The following list is not exhaustive, but merely provided for illustrative purposes: - thermal (prol

、onged temperature); - thermal cycling; - humidity; - mechanical shock; - mechanical tension; - mechanical vibration. Where thermal cycling is applied in addition to other perturbations, it is recommended that thermal cycling be performed after mechanical tests, such as vibration. Parts which may be

、affected by mechanical perturbation may appear good at normal laboratory temperature, but in fact may fail at lower or higher temperature extremes. The screens shall not have accelerated effects. The duration of screens shall be selected to put in evidence and to eliminate defects without affecting

、component lifetime. 5 Ongoing validation of screen effectiveness Product screening is a process, not a test. As such, it requires ongoing validation of its effectiveness. This starts with monitoring product failure rates in processes and reactions to changes in those failure rates. It is possible th

、at, with time and improvement of processes or materials, the screen no longer produces fallout of products, because the failure mechanism(s) have been eliminated in the process. In that case, the screen can be successfully eliminated. It is also possible that, with changes to processes or materials

、over time, the level of severity or degree of acceleration may no longer be appropriate. Also, it is possible that degradation of the product by the screen may have begun to occur. For that reason, ongoing validation of the screen and its relationship to the failure mechanism(s) in question should b

、e performed. 6 Conclusion Screening is a potential alternative to product redesign, in order to minimize early failures in a product population. Screens shall be properly applied to ensure that no degradation of product lifetime or effectiveness related to the failure mechanism(s) in question occurs

、. Screens used on products shall also be maintained and validated on an ongoing basis, to ensure their effectiveness and relevance over time. Screening is a choice which shall never be mandatory, but chosen in the context of proper use, as a cost effective alternative to product design improvements.
