38、1 IS0 787-3 IS0 787-9 5 to 7 5togb - For the purposes of this part of IS0 3262, the following term and definition applies. 3.1 vitreous silica a non-crystalline modification of silica I For use as an extender it is supplied ground to a powder. There are two different grades of vitreous silica in use
39、, the grade depending on the raw materials used in its manu- facture: Grade A (quartz glass): A transparent form of vitreous silica that is usually made from molten rock crystal. Grade B (fused silica): An opaque form of vitreous silica that is made from molten silica sand. The opacity of the produc
40、t is due to very small gas bubbles incorporated in it. 4 Requirements and test methods For vitreous silica complying with this part of IS0 3262, the essential requirements are specified in Table 1 and the conditional requirements are listed in Table 2. a Another method may be agreed between the inte

42、arties Test method in preparation. 5 Sampling Take a representative sample of the product to be tested, as described in IS0 15528. 6 Determination of silica content 6.1 Reagents During the analysis, use only reagents of recognized analytical grade and only water of at least grade 3 purity as de- fin
43、ed in IS0 3696. 6.1.1 Sulfuric acid, diluted 1 + 1. Add 1 part by volume of concentrated sulfuric acid, approximately 96 % (m/m), p M 1,84 g/ml, slowly to 1 part by volume of water. 6.1.2 Hydrofluoric acid, approximately 40 % (m/m), p N 1,13 g/ml. 6.2 Apparatus Use ordinary laboratory apparatus and
44、glassware, together with the following: 6.2.1 Platinum dish. 6.2.2 Muffle furnace. 6.3 Procedure Weigh, to the nearest 1 mg, approximately 2 g of the test sample (clause 5), previously dried at 105 OC in accord- ance with IS0 787-2, into the tared platinum dish (6.2.1), ignite in the muffle furnace
45、(6.2.2) at (1 O00 f 25) “C to constant mass (mi) and allow to cool in a desiccator containing phosphorus pentoxide. Add approximately 1 ml of sulfuric acid (6.1.1). Heat the platinum dish gently until fuming ceases and then continue the heating at 900 OC for 15 min in the muffle furnace. Remove from
46、 the furnace, allow to cool in a desiccator and weigh to the nearest 0,l mg (m2). Add to the residue in the platinum dish 15 ml of hydrofluoric acid (6.1.2) and 1 ml of sulfuric acid (6.1 .I) and evapo- rate to a syrup, taking care to avoid loss by spitting. Cool the dish and wash the sides down wit
47、h small quantities of 3 EN IS0 3262-15:2000 water. Then add a further 1 O ml of hydrofluoric acid and evaporate to dryness. Heat the residue on a hot-plate until white fumes are no longer evolved, then ignite in the muffle furnace at 900 OC for 15 min. Remove the dish from the furnace, cool in the d
48、esiccator and weigh to the nearest 0,l mg (m3). 6.4 Expression of results Calculate the silica content w(Si02), expressed as a percentage by mass, using the equation: w(sio2) = m2-m3 x 100 ml where ml m2 m3 is the mass, in grams, of the ignited residue; is the mass, in grams, after treatment with su
