、CE, DECORATIVE FINISH - BRIGHT METAL PARTS - ESB-M2P69-B EXTERIOR NOT TO BE USED FOR NEW DESIGN 1. SCOPE This specification defines the paint performance requirements for partially painted exterior parts made from chromium plated die castings, chromium plated steel or plastic, chromium flashed stain

、less steel, anodized aluminum and stainless steel, including hub caps, wheel covers, grilles, back panels, moldings and large appliqus. 2. APPLICATION This specification was released originally for partially painted exterior bright metal parts employing air dry or baking enamel as specified and for

、fully painted aluminum (not anodized) surfaces where a single coat of baked enamel is satisfactory. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.0 STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTION MATERIALS Material suppliers and part producers must conform to the Companys Standard Requirements For Production Materials (WSS-M99P1111-A). 3

、.1 METAL PREPARATION 3.1.1 Partially Painted Anodized Aluminum, Chromium Plate, or Stainless Steel Surfaces Adequate preparation per process C-250E, or equivalent performing process when specifically so approved by the using Ford manufacturing division. 3.1.2 Fully Painted Aluminum Bare aluminum (no

、t anodized) shall be oxide coated per ESB-M6P2. 3.2 PRIMER FOR CHROMIUM SURFACES The use of ESA-M6J73 primer is optional if necessary to obtain the required adhesion. The primer film thickness requirement is 0.0005 - 0.00075 in (13 - 19.1 m). 3.3 ENAMEL Shall consist of a single coat of air dry or b

、aked enamel. Prior to use of an enamel, the manufacturer of the enamel shall obtain approval for the specific color and gloss in question from the BEPE Materials Engineering Department. 9、e of packing to withstand normal handling and shipping without marring. 3.4.3 Enamel Film Thickness, min 0.0010 in (25 m) (FLTM BI 117-01) Unless otherwise specified on the engineering drawing, a lower minimum film thickness may be specified on surfaces which are nonvisible, noncritical or are not s

、ubject to weathering. (When the production part does not lend itself to film thickness measurements, test panels processed concurrently with production parts may be used). 3.4.4 Curing - Painted Chromium Plated Plastic Shall be conditioned according to one of the following cure schedules before test

Parts that are difficult to wipe by hand, particularly in recessed areas, may be blown dry with oil and moisture free compressed air. Immediately apply with firm thumb

、 pressure, ESF-M3G48-A tape to all painted areas of the part. In the event that part complexity requires significant time for tape application, areas of greatest visual contact should be tested first. In no case should the time between dry-off and testing exceed 10 min. Remove the tape by pulling on

Class “B“ Surfaces on Radiator Grilles Any removal of paint exceeding 1/4 in (6.4 mm) for the longest dimension shall cons

、titute a failure and rejection of that lot. Class “C“ Surfaces on Radiator Grilles Any removal of paint exceeding 1/2 in (12.7 mm) for the longest dimension shall constitute a failure and rejection of that lot. b. A grid consisting of 100 - 1/4 in (6.4 mm) squares is to be used according to the foll

、owing procedure: . The grid is to be placed over the paint separations so that the grid and/or the individual squares encompass the worst combination of separations. . If a paint separation is on the dividing line between two squares, it shall be counted in the square having the most separations. .

、No paint separation shall be counted twice. Failures are defined as follows: Class “A“ and “B“ Surfaces on Radiator Grilles and All Surfaces on All Other Parts . A square is rated a failure if more than 5 spots (of any size) of paint separation occur within any given square. . If more than 2% of the

、 squares in a grid are classified a failure, this shall constitute a lot failure and rejection of that lot. Class “C“ Surfaces on Radiator Grilles . An area of 1 in2(6.5 cm2) is rated failure if more than 3 spots of paint separation exceeding 1/4 in (6.4 mm) in the longest dimension occur. . If more

、 than 2% of the 1 in2(6.5 cm2) areas are classified a failure, this shall constitute a lot failure and rejection of that lot. 3.5.2 Gasoline Resistance Immerse the part in M-14J148 Petroleum Naphtha for 1 h at 21 C minimum. No blistering of the paint is permitted, and only slight softening and dulli

No increase of brittleness or loss of adhesion is permitted and specimens shall be completely free from evidence of cracking, checking, blistering, or peeling. 3.5.4 Water Resistance After Weathering After parts or test panels have b

The conditions for rejection described in para 3.5.1 shall apply to this test. 3.5.5 Thermal Shock Test No loss of adhesion (FLTM BI 107-05)3.5.6 Salt Spray Resistance, min

、96 h (ASTM B 117) This test is to be conducted only on finished parts of dissimilar metals, assembled by an outside supplier. Test Method: Remove from the salt fog atmosphere and immediately scribe an “X“ through the enamel to the metal. Dry the scribed area with a paper towel, cloth or by air blow

、off and immediately apply ESF-M3G48 tape with firm thumb pressure. Remove the tape by pulling one end at a 90 angle at moderate speed. Removal of the paint beyond 1/16 in (1.6 mm) from a scribe line or blistering visible to the naked eye shall be cause for rejection. 3.5.7 Sampling Samples represent

、ing a lot shall be taken from each operator every 2 h. One sample is to be tested for water resistance, one sample tested for salt spray resistance when required, and one sample tested for gasoline resistance as required by the engineering specification. All samples shall be checked for paint film t

、hickness. Samples shall be tested for weathering resistance at a frequency specified by Quality Assurance. If the sample subjected to water resistance fails to meet the engineering requirements, the producer may elect to re-sample the lot. Five additional samples shall be selected at random for the

、same lot and subjected to water resistance testing. If any of the re-samples fail to meet the engineering requirements, or if the producer has not elected to re-sample, the entire lot must be rejected and either reprocessed or scrapped.
