2、TIVATED CARBON Application Purified dry air is passed through a carbon tetrachloride - saturated sample for six hours under specified conditions. The percentage of carbon tetrachloride retained by the carbon is its retentivity. Apparatus Required The apparatus is shown diagrammatically in figures 1

Insulated Box - J This may be an ordinary insulated picnic box. Needle Valve - G Stainless steel, for air control, Catalog No. 10 - 583, Fisher Scie

Activity Tube - I The carbon sample tube shown in figure 2 is a hard glass, “U“ shaped tube, 190 mm long, having an inside diameter in the larger leg of the tube of 14.1 mm. A perforated porcelain disc

6、is fused to the wall of this tube at the lower end approxima tely 40 mm from the bottom, and a line is marked on the tube exactly 100 mm above the surface of the disc. When filled to the 100 mm mark, the tube holds 15.7 mL of the sample. This part must be custom made. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD AZ

Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material condi tioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/ - 2 C and 50 +/ -

11、5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. 12、 special tube as directed by the Activity Test, AZ 3 - 5. (Note and record weight of activity tube from Step 7 and weight of sample from Step 14 of the Procedure AZ 3 - 5). 2. Maintain the sample at 25 C throughout the test in the controlled w ater bath. 3. Connect the retentivity apparatus and pass

13、 purified air into the carbon tetrachloride saturated sample and into graduate (B) containing 50 mm of mercury. 4. Pass the purified air for exactly 6 hours at 780 mL per minute. 5. Weigh tube cont aining sample and record. Note: As the amount of vapor retained by the sample is dependent upon the to

14、tal volume of air passed through the tube, it is important that these, as well as other conditions, are accurately controlled. The percentage of carbon tetrachloride retained by the sample is calculated by dividing the weight of carbon tetrachloride retained by the weight of the original carbon samp

15、le and multiplying by 100. Calculations . Weight of activity tube = A (Refer to Step 7 of Procedure AZ 3 - 5). . Weight of sample = B (Refer to Step 14 of Procedure AZ 3 - 5) . Weight of activity tube, sample and retained carbon tetrachloride = C (Refer to Step 5 of Procedure AZ 3 - 5) . The activit

16、y is the percentage of carbon tetrachloride absorb ed by the sample at saturation. (Refer to Step 14 of Procedure AZ 3 - 5) 1.
