1、FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BN 015-03 2001 0822 ENERGY ABSORPTION OF PADDING MATERIALS Revised Editorial - no technical change A. Cockman Application This procedure is used to test the energy absorption characteristics of cotton, foam rubber, felt and similar padding materials used for interior trim

2、 applications. Scope This procedure consists of sibjecting a test specimen of the padding material to cyclic loading under closely controlled conditions and calculating the energy absorption of the sample at the completion of the specified number of cycles. 6、ut a 4 by 4 inch sample of the padding material. Condition after cutting for 24 h at 65 +/- 2 % relative humidity and 70 +/-2 OF. Calibrate the instrument and the integrator following the directions in the instruction manual, then proceed as follows: (a) Balance the instrument and integrator and cal

7、ibrate for weight by placing a 1 Ib weight on the load cell and making adjustments as necessary. Turn the integrator counter switches to ”On” position and turn Manual -Automatic switch to ”Automatic” position. Set the load cam for 25 Ib compression load cycling (see manual). Set crosshead speed to 1

8、 inch/minute by using proper gear combination as shown in gear selection chart for various crosshead speeds (see manual). Slowly lower crosshead until no clearance exists between crosshead and load cell. (Final zero clearance should be made by turning the manual positioning control knob and adjustin

9、g distance by observing ”no load” on recorder chart - see manual). Set ”Return” dials on control panel to zero, set ”Gage Length” dials for required number of inches to allow for placement of sample, then raise crosshead to that position. (b) (c) (d) (e) (9 With scale setting at 1 Ib, place the test

10、 specimen on the loading cell and read weight from chart. The chart recorder indicates in pounds. Weight should be converted to ounces per square foot. Again balance the instrument, using the ”Fine” balance knob to offset the weight of the sample. Apply a load of 0.1 Ib at 1 inch/minute and stop the

Set full scale load to 50 Ib range. Clear counters on the integrator. With the Instron set for compound cycling between ”load” as

(The crosshead movement should not be stopped, since it is possible to read (T2) without interrupting the test in progress). 13. Calculate percent compression

14、 as follows: % compression = T, - T, x 100 T, Where TI = original thickness under 0.1 Ib load and T2 = compressed thickness under 25 Ib load 14. Continue the test for ten complete cycles of loading and unloading 15. Read the counters on the integrator at the completion of the ten cycles and record t

Calculate energy absorption value of the test specimen as follows: E = X x L x S = X x 50 x 1 = X 5000 5000 100 Where E = energy in inch pounds L = full scale load in Ib (50 Ib) S = rate of sampl

All values obtained must be adjusted to a common basis of a 2 inch thick sample, using the following formula: Adjusted energy absorption = TI Where E = energy absorption value (Step 16) TI = original thickness (Step 7
