2、od is used to determine the effect of various water-based fluids, such as ethylene glycol-based engine coolants, on elevated temperatures under pressure, on the physical properties of polymers. Scope This method describes the exposure of elastomeric, plastic, adhesive, or other materials to engine c

3、oolant under pressure at elevated temperatures. It may be useful for comparative evaluation of changes in properties resulting from in-service engine coolant system conditions. CAUTION: A 1:1 mixture of engine coolant and water boils at approximately 105 +/- 2 C at one atmosphere of pressure. Excess

4、ive temperature and pressure will result in confined vapor venting into the laboratory when using an “autoclave“-style container thereby invalidating the test and posing a risk to personnel. General purpose “Parr“-type vessels will withstand extreme temperature and pressure. However, they pose consi

5、derable risk of venting super-heated vapor upon opening if opened while hot. Observe all vessel manufacturers recommendations. CAUTION: The oven must be equipped with an automatic shut-off in the event of a temperature overrun that could cause serious injury. Materials Required Engine Coolant

12、 The coolant used should be the appropriate initial fill coolant for the territory of component use at the recommended concentration. Ethylene Glycol - Reagent grade Distilled or Deionized Water 20 microohms/cm at 25 C maximum conductivity (ASTM D 1125). Wire For use in hanging specimens: SAE 30302

13、- 1.0 mm stainless steel wire, or equivalent. Form in such a manner to permit specimens to be suspended approximately 10 mm below the fluid level in the cylinder. Glass Beads - perforated 6 mm diameter with a 2 mm hole. Used to separate specimens on the wire hanger. Alternatively, short sections (6

Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 C and 50

15、+/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure Specimen Preparation A. Plastics - Refer to ASTM D 638 and/or ASTM D638M/ISO R527 for preparation of tensile specimens. B. Elastomers 1. Slab Material - Refer

16、to ASTM D 412 and/or ISO 37 for preparation of tensile, ASTM D 471 and/or ISO 1817 for volume, and ASTM D 624 and/or ISO 34 for Tear Resistance specimens. 2. Hoses - Refer to ASTM D 380 and ASTM D 3183. C. Adhesives - Refer to ASTM D 1002 and/or FLTM BV 101-06 for preparation of shear coupon . assem

17、blies. Test Procedure For specimens measuring greater than 125 mm in length, use a pressure vessel having a 2000 mL capacity. For specimens of 125 mm or less, use a pressure vessel having a 1000 mL capacity. The large 9.5 L pressure vessel may be used when the number of specimens is very large. 1. F

18、or flat specimens, punch or drill a 1.5 - 1.8 mm hole approximately 5 mm from one end of the specimen to permit assembly on a wire hanger. For individual small parts of irregular shape that are to be aged and evaluated intact, suspend or immerse in such a manner that contact between parts is minimal

19、. 2. Mount specimens on a stainless steel wire specimen rack. Separate samples as shown in Figures 1 and 2 for small pressure vessels with 6 mm diameter glass beads at the top and bottom to prevent touching and nesting. Alternate tensile specimens with volume specimens. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD B

If the specimens tend to float to the surface of the vessel, a support wire should be added to the end of the specimen to maintain a vertical attitude during the exposure period. Note: When utilizing the pressure vessel itself as th

21、e aging container, form the specimen hanging wire in such a manner to permit the specimen(s) to be suspended and completely covered by the coolant/water mixture. Alternatively, the smaller individual containers of coolant and specimens can be placed inside the pressure vessel so long as the specimen

22、s are spaced adequately from each other and are fully submerged in the solution. For adhesive lap shear coupon assemblies, it is not necessary to suspend or totally immerse the specimens. However, the bonded area must be immersed fully in the solution. 3. Unless otherwise specified in the applicable

23、 Engineering Materials Specification, prepare a 1:1 mixture of currently approved engine coolant concentrate and distilled water and introduce directly into the pressure vessel. Assure that the specimens are immersed fully but do not exceed 85 % of the total available capacity of the container. 4. P

24、lace the specimen rack or smaller individual containers into the pressure vessel. 5. Secure the top (head) of the vessel on the cylinder making certain that it is seated properly and tightened. 6. Place the sealed pressure vessel into an oven maintained at a temperature for the amount of time specif

25、ied by the applicable Engineering Materials Specification. 7. Remove the sealed pressure vessel from the oven and transport it to a laboratory hood equipped with a bench vise. Allow it to cool to 23 +/-2 C. When cool, secure it in the vise and open the needle valve to release any remaining pressure.

26、 (CAUTION: Do NOT attempt to open the vessel while hot. Residual pressure may cause serious injury.) Note: A modification of this method where the needle valve is opened fully while the vessel is hot is practiced for evaluating sudden expansion of vapor within elastomers. Assure that the escaping va

27、por is directed into the hood and away from the operator. 8. Once the vessel reaches room temperature and/or the pressure is released, immediately remove the specimens from the vessel. Immerse the specimens in a fresh mixture of the same solution for 30 - 60 minutes at 23 +/- 2 C. Remove the specime

28、ns from the cool solution, blot dry with lint-free tissue and test according to the applicable industry test method or FLTM as required. Note: If the volume of fluid at the end of the test indicates a loss greater than 5 % due to leakage, the source of the leak should be corrected and the test repea

29、ted. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
