、ermines the potential swelling effect of substances extracted by non-petroleum based brake fluids from polymeric/elastomeric materials on the elastomeric seals of brakeklutch master and slave cylinders in brakeklutch actuation systems. Apparatus Required Glass Screw-Top Jars Approximately 120 ml vol

、ume containing a single layer of glass beads on the bottom. The lids shall contain no extractable materials that can cause the seals to swell. Uncoated metal lids preferred. Balance Capable of weighing accurately to 0.1 mg. Air-Circulating Oven Capable of maintaining a temperature of 70 +/- 2 OC. Co

、nditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 OC and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure 1. Individua

、lly determine and record the initial volume (VI) of three brakeklutch cylinder seals as specified on the Engineering Drawing or Material Specification according to ASTM D 471/ISO 181 7. Note: Before weighing in water, quickly dip the seal into Isopropanol and then into water. Ensure there are no bub

Place one seal in each of three 120 ml screw-top jars along with approximately 2 g of elastomer/polymer sample as specified on the Engineering Drawing

、 or Material Specification ensuring they are not in contact. Place 1 O0 ml of non-petroleum based brake fluid as specified on the Engineering Drawing or Material Specification in each of the jars. Close the jars and place in an oven at 70 +/- 2 “C. After 72, 168 and 336 h remove the jars from the ov

、en and allow to cool at room temperature for between 60 and 90 minutes. Remove the seals from each jar, wipe with lint-free cloth or tissue and rinse quickly in Ethanol or Isopropanol and wipe again with a lint-free cloth or tissue. Determine the final volume (V2) of the seals and calculate the volu

Before weighing in water, quickly dip the seal into Isopropanol and then into water. Ensure After 72 and 168 h volume change determinations, ensure the seal is clean and dry before

、replacing in the original brake fluid. At the same time repeat steps 1 to 7 but omit the elastomeric/polymeric sample. Calculate for each volume change (dV1) caused by hydraulic fluid and the substances extracted from the elastomeric/polymeric material in accordance with ASTM D 471/ISO 181 7. Record

、 the mean of the three values as Vml Similarly calculate for each seal immersed without the elastomeric/ polymeric sample the volume change (dV2) caused by the hydraulic fluid alone. Record the mean of the three values as Vm2. Calculate the volume change (dV2) of the seals caused by the elastomeric/

、 polymeric sample as follows: dVs = Vml- Vm2 Plot these volume changes (dVs) against time. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly.
