、This procedure is used to determine the fatigue resistance of both curing and non - curing pumpable mastic or preformed adhesives used for bonding windshields and backlights to p ainted steel. Equipment Required Flexing Apparatus The apparatus shown in Figure 1 (or equivalent) is used to flex the te

、st assembly shown in Figure 2 a total of 0.060 inches (+/ - 0.030 inches from the normal position) at a rate of 660 +/ - 50 cycles/min ute as measured at the bond line. The metal panel portion of the test assembly is clamped into a fixed position and the glass panel is caused to move relative to the

、 metal panel by the action of the connecting rod mounted directly to the edge of the glass . Hydraulic Press A laboratory press, Pasadena Hydraulics Inc., Model PWOS220, or equivalent, is required to compress non - curing tape adhesives to the proper material thickness. Glass Panels The glass panel

、shown in Figure 2 shall be 1/4 x 5 x 7 inch pla te glass. Steel Panels The steel panels shown in Figure 2 shall be 20 gage, .034 - .039 x 3 x 9 inch C.R. body quality phosphate coated steel panels. The panels shall be top coated with currently released primer surfacer (ESB - M6J49, red, or ESB - M6J

、50, gr ay) and a light colored ESB - M32J100 quality baking enamel. The primer surfacer bake schedule shall be 30 minutes at 350 +/ - 5 F. The enamel bake schedule shall be 30 minutes at 250 +/ - 5 F. Deep Freeze Revco Model SZH 653 or equivalent is satisfactory for producing temperature of - 20 F r

Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/ - 2 C

、 and 50 +/ - 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure Normal Fatigue (Duplicate Samples Required) 1. The metal and glass bonding surfaces shall be clean and free fr om grease, dirt or other contaminants.

、If cleaning is necessary, it shall be accomplished by wiping the surfaces with a clean cheesecloth dampened with grease - free naphtha or toluol solvent. 2. Apply an adhesion primer if specified along the edge of the glass and metal as shown in Figure 2. The primer width shall not exceed 1/2 inch on

、 either surface. Low viscosity primers that can be conveniently applied by using a cloth dampened with the material shall be applied in such a manner as to provide a unifo rm dry film thickness of 0.5 mil. Medium viscosity primers that require brush application shall be applied in such a manner as t

、o provide a uniform dry film thickness of 3 to 5 mils. 3. Allow the primer to flash dry for a minimum of 10 minutes and no lon ger than 60 minutes at 23 +/ - 2 C. 4. Apply the adhesive to the primed area of the glass. Preformed tape adhesives shall be positioned 1/16 inch inboard from the edge of th

、e glass. Adhesives which are normally received as pumpable mastics shall be appl ied from a flow gun as a 1/4 inch diameter bead centered in the primed area. The length of adhesive shall be 6 inches. 5. Position the glass, with the adhesive applied, in contact with the metal panel. Preformed adhesiv

、es, as indicated above, shall cont act the primed area 1/16 inch inboard from the edge of the metal. Mastic type adhesives shall be centered within the primed area. 6. Compress the assembly to a total adhesive thickness of 0.2 +/ - .02 inch, using the hydraulic press, Figure 3, and hold in this posi

、tion for 1 minute. The maximum load on the sample shall not exceed 1000 lbs force. The sample may be shimmed, if convenient, to maintain the required adhesive thickness. The use of the press is necessary for preformed adhesives while hand pres sure is generally adequate for the mastic types. 7. Remo

、ve the sample from the press and condition either seven days at 72 +/ - 5 F or 16 h a 120 +/ - 2 F. During the conditioning period, the attitude of the glass and metal shall remain parallel. (A shim may be used.) 8. After the conditioning period, the test assembly shall be mounted in the test fixtur

、e as shown in Figure 1. The glass and metal shall remain parallel when mounted without introducing abnormal loads on the bond line. The metal panel may be shimmed as required to retain the proper test attitude of the assembly. When the assembly is properly mounted and adjusted, the metal panel shall

、 be clamped securely to the test bed to prevent movement during the test. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BU 013-01 Page 3 of 6 Copyright 2000, Ford Global Technologies, Inc. 9. Adjust the stroke on the co nnecting rod to zero so that at the start of the test the glass will travel through the required +

、/ - 0.030 inch movement with the first stroke. This can be accomplished by manually actuating the connecting rod and measuring the travel of the glass with a dial gage. After the adjustment is made, the glass clamp shall be securely fastened to the lower edge of the glass. 10. Position the water del

、ivery tube over the bond line (approximately 1/16 inch above the maximum travel of the glass). Adjust the water flow to maintain a continuous film of water over the entire length of the bond area. Tap water shall be used for the test. 11. Start the flexing fixture and continue testing at 23 +/ - 2 C

、 until he fatigue resistance cycle requirement of the specificati on is met or until failure occurs. Note: A failure is defined as a loss of adhesion of primer to glass, primer to metal, tape to primer, or cohesive failure within the adhesive bond, that extends completely through the bonded area, or

、 that penetrates mor e than 1/4 inch from either end of the bonded area. Aged Fatigue (Six Samples Required) 1. Proceed as outlined in Steps 1 through 7. 2. After completing the conditioning period in Step 7, expose duplicate assemblies to each of the environments listed be low: 2 for 2 weeks at 190

、 +/ - 2 F 2 for 2 weeks a 98 +/ - 2 F and 95 - 100 % relative humidity 2 for 2 weeks total water immersion at 72 +/ - 5 F under a 4 inch head of water 3. Immediately after completing the conditioning in Step 2, the six assemblies shall be subjected to a temperature of - 20 F and retained at this tem

、perature for a minimum of 4 h before testing. The same precautions noted previously with regard to maintaining adhesive thickness and parallel alignment of glass and metal shall be ob served. 4. Proceed as outlined in Steps 8, 9 and 11 above and subject the assemblies to the required number of fatig

、ue cycles at - 20 F. Step 10 may be omitted when the testing is conducted at - 20 F. Note: Testing - 20 F may be accomplished by movi ng the test apparatus into a cold room for that purpose, or a frame and cover may be adapted to the Revco cold box which permits the motor to straddle the box while t

、he flexing apparatus is placed in the box. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment re ferenced in this document must be used and handled properly.
