Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled at
、mosphere of 23 +/- 2 C and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Preparation of Test Specimens 1. Stir the adhesive sample thoroughly. Adhesive must be stored in a tightly closed container to ensure that
、solvent loss is kept to a minimum. 2. Cut test strips from the materials specified to dimensions as indicated in Figures 1 - 4. When adhesives are applied both to panel and test strip, each must be brush coated. 3. The test panels must be free from any contamination such as grease, dirt and finger m
、arks, etc. Coat the test panel with adhesive at 23 +/- 2 C to the thickness required by the relevant Material Specification using the brush. If the Material Specification requires the application of adhesive both to the test strip and the test panel, then both must be coated within 30 seconds. 4. Al
、low the adhesive to flash off at 23 +/- 2 C for the time required by the relevant Material Specification. Then place the test strip on the adhesive coated area of the test panel. If both test strip and test panel are coated with adhesive, position the test strip on the test panel to ensure that the
、adhesion area is in line with the dimensional requirements of Figures 1 -4. 5. The mating surfaces must be pressed together firmly by hand to force out trapped air and ensure a good bond, within 30 seconds. 6. If the adhesive properties of the material under test are to be determined after heat agin
、g, the test assembly must be conditioned for 16 hours at 23 +/- 2 C followed by 14 days at 70 +/- 2 C. After removal from the oven, the test assembly must be conditioned for 2 hours at 23 +/- 2 C prior to continuing the test. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BU 151-01 Page 3 of 7 Copyright 2000, Ford Glo
、bal Technologies, Inc. Procedure If varying flash off times are required by the relevant Material Specification, then the following tests must be performed for each flash off time. Method A - Shear Adhesion 1. Determine the shear adhesion on the five test assemblies (Figures 1 or 2), after condition
、ing for the times stated in the relevant Material Specification, e.g.: A. 10 minutes B. 2 hours C. 24 hours D. 2 hours after completion of heat aging 2. Insert the test assembly in the tensile machine so that the test panel is clamped in the upper jaws with the test strip vertical. Fix squarely in t
、he lower jaws. A 5 mm space must be left between the lower jaws and the lower edge of the test panel (Figure 5). It is essential that no load is applied to the test assembly during the loading operation. 3. With a jaw separation rate of 25 mm per minute, load the test assembly to failure, and record
、 the maximum load. Evaluation Calculate the shear adhesion as follows: Shear Adhesion (N/mm2) = F max A Where: F max = Maximum load in N A = Adhesion area in mm2 Report the average for the 5 test assemblies including type and method of preparation. Method B1 - Peel at Room Temperature 1. Determine t
、he peel adhesion on the five test assemblies (Figure 3) after conditioning for the times stated in the relevant Material Specification, e.g.: A. 10 minutes B. 2 hours C. 24 hours D. 2 hours after completion of heat aging FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BU 151-01 Page 4 of 7 Copyright 2000, Ford Global T
、echnologies, Inc. 2. Insert the test assembly in the tensile machine so that the test panel is clamped in the lower jaws and the test strip is squarely clamped in the upper jaws (Figure 6). It is essential that no load is applied to the test assembly during the loading operation. 3. With a jaw separ
、ation rate of 50 mm per minute, peel the test strip 180 degrees from the test panel in 4 separate 25 mm stages, releasing the load at the end of each 25 mm stage. Evaluation Calculate the average maximum load (N) for the 4 peeling stages, then, Peel Adhesion (N/mm) = F max b Where: F max = Average m
、aximum peel load (N) b = Width of test strip in mm Report the average for the 5 test assemblies, and method of preparation. Method B2 - Peel Adhesion at Elevated Temperatures 1. Determine the peel adhesion on the five test assemblies (Figure 4) after conditioning the test assemblies as follows: Afte
、r the bonding process, hold the test assembly for 24 hours at 23 +/- 2 C, followed by 1 hour at 70 +/- 2 C. Cool to 23 +/- 2 C and insert the test assembly in the test fixture (Figure 7), then load the free end of the test strip with a 0.1 kg or 100 g load as shown in Figure. 2. Condition the test a
、ssembly in the oven at 60 +/- 2 C for 30 minutes. Raise the oven temperature in 10 C increments and hold for ten minutes at each stage, until the test strip is completely detached from the panel. Ensure that each increment is achieved as rapidly as possible within the limitations of the oven type. T
、he length of material detached from the panel is measured with an accuracy of +/- 2 mm at each temperature level, keeping the oven door closed and controlling the degree of detachment through the view window. Note: In order to measure the “peeled off“ length accurately at each temperature stage, it
、is recommended that 2 mm divisions are marked off on the visible painted strip on the underside of the painted panel prior to the test. Evaluation Report the average of the “peeled off“ lengths of five samples for each temperature level up to the temperature level required by the relevant Material S
