2、ation This procedure is used to determine the binder content and average fiber diameter of fiber glass mats used as formed components of insulation materials in vehicle manufacture. Apparatus Required Analytical Balance Precision +/- 0.05 g. Mechanical Convection Oven Capable of maintaining a temper

3、ature of 105 +/- 2 C. Muffle Furnace Capable of maintaining 550 +/- 20 C. Wire Mesh Tray Approximately 300 x 150 x 25 mm deep with smooth internal surfaces. 12 mesh x 25 SWG stainless steel is recommended. Desiccator Charged with suitable desiccant. Microscope 1,000 x magnification with a measuring

4、eyepiece. The above apparatus is available at any reputable laboratory equipment house. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 C and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testin

Procedure Method A - Binder Content Determination 1. Cut representative pieces from the mat (full thickness of the material) and combine

6、 them to form a test sample of 20 g minimum weight. 2. Dry the sample in the mechanical convection oven for 1 h at 105 +/- 2 C. 3. Cool sample in desiccator and weigh on analytical balance. 4. Transfer the sample to the wire mesh tray and ignite in the muffle furnace at 550 +/- 20 C for a minimum of

7、 30 minutes. 5. Remove the tray and sample from the furnace and cool to 23 +/- 2 C. 6. Weigh the glass fiber residue. Retain this sample if the average fiber diameter is to be determined. Calculation Binder content = A - B x 100 A Where: A = Weight of dried test sample B = Weight of glass fiber resi

8、due after ignition Method B - Fiber Diameter Determination 1. Using the glass fiber residue from Method A, prepare 4 microscope slides. Place a small pinch of fiber onto the slide and disperse it in a drop of a suitable mounting medium (e.g., 50:50 glycerin and water mixture). Place a cover slip ove

9、r the fiber. 2. Measure the diameter of 25 fibers from each slide using the microscope of 1,000 x magnification. 3. Calculate the average fiber diameter from the 100 individual measurements. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
