2、s used to determine the amount of water absorption by adhesive and sealant materials. This procedure may be used in conjunction with FLTM BV 108-02, Volume Change Test for Adhesives and Sealants. Apparatus and Materials Required Oven A mechanical convection oven capable of maintaining temperatures o
3、f 250 +/-2 C (Blue M Model No. POM-166A-GX, or equivalent). Knife - Surgical Blade Curtin-Matheson Scientific Catalog No. 079-657 (handle), and 079-681 (blade), or equivalent. Panel CRLC steel; 300 x 300 x 0.89 mm. Coupons 3 aluminum 100 x 25 x 1.14 mm coupons or 3 pieces of aluminum foil 150 x 60 m
4、m. Paper Towel Highly absorbent towel. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 C and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless oth
5、erwise specified. Procedure 1. Weigh 3 aluminum coupons or pieces of aluminum foil to the nearest milligram in air (this weight is “Wc“). 6、the center of each aluminum sample. Cut off each bead on both ends, to eliminate necking, to provide a 50 mm length of material (see Figure 1). Note: The closed container of adhesive or sealant should be conditioned for 24 h at 23 +/- 2 C prior to application. 3. Bake the specimens in a mechanical c
7、onvection oven at a metal temperature of 135 +/- 2 C for 8 minutes. Specimens are to be baked in a horizontal position, centrally located and protected from direct air flow. To assure the proper bake schedule, place the specimens on a 300 x 300 x 0.89 mm CRLC steel panel while in the oven. 4. Allow
8、the specimens to cool at 23 +/- 2 C. Weigh each specimen to the nearest milligram in air (this weight is “W2“). 5. Method A: Totally immerse the specimens in tap water* at 23 +/- 2 C for 24 h. Method B: Cut 2 crossing lines approximately 25 mm in length and 3 mm in depth through the surface of the c
9、ured material bead. Totally immerse the specimens in tap water* at 23 +/- 2 C for 24 h. *Note: Distilled or deionized water shall not be used. 6. Remove the specimens from the water and lightly blot with a highly absorbent paper towel as rapidly as possible. 7. Immediately weigh each specimen to the
10、 nearest milligram in air (this weight is “W3“). 8. Calculate the percent water absorption as follows: Percent Water Absorption = W 3 W 2 x 100 W2 Wc Where: Wc = weight of aluminum carrier W2 = weight of cured material and carrier W3 = weight of cured material and carrier after water immersion 9. Re
11、peat the above procedure except bake at a metal temperature of 205 +/-2 C for 30 minutes. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly.
