5、ocedure Fuel Tanks Visual Inspection Visual inspection of fuel tanks should be made with a small flexible light which can be inserted in the tank. Examination should be made for rust and dirt. Chlorides 1. Measure 1000 mL of distilled water into a beaker and bring to a boil. Cover to minimize loss d

6、uring heating. 2. Pour into fuel tank and shake vigorously for at least 1/2 minute to dissolve chlorides. 3. Drain into a beaker, cool and let any sediment settle to the bottom. 4. Aliquot 100 mL into a 300 mL Erlenmeyer flask, add 5 drops of potassium chromate indicator and titrate with 0.1 N silve

Decant or filter sediment obtained during water wash for chlorides and combine with foreign material obtained by solvent washes. Solids 1. Cut top half of tank from bottom section, using a chisel or

8、metal cutting shears, taking care not to form slivers or chips which will get into interior of tank. 2. Wash the interior of the tank with inhibited methyl chloroform, using a wash bottle and soft bristle brush. Note: If chlorides were determined first, wash tank with alcohol to remove water and fil

Filter through a weighed Whatman 42 H filter paper to remove solids from solvents, combine with any sediment from chloride test, dry in an oven and weigh. 11、te magnetic particles by passing a magnet under the paper until the magnetic portion is separated from the non-magnetic material. Weigh magnetic particles and report as total magnetic material. Fuel Lines 1. Rinse the inside of the fuel line with a wash bottle containing inhibited methyl chloroform

12、into a beaker until the washings are clean. 2. Decant or filter insoluble residue, dry and weigh. 3. Report as total solid material. Fuel Pumps and Carburetors 1. Wash off exterior part of assembly with solvent and discard. 2. Disassemble and wash all interior surfaces of pump or carburetor which no

13、rmally contact fuel. Use organic solvents and wash bottle as described under fuel lines. Remove all chips, burrs and shavings from walls and passages and combine with solid material. 3. 14、oluble material is required, evaporate filtered solvents on a steam bath to a low volume. Rinse into a tared Petri dish, evaporate to dryness; dry in an oven at 300 +/- 5 F for 1 h, cool and weigh. Identification of Solid Material Examine under microscope at approximately 10X magnification and ident
