2、IBILITY Application This test method describes the procedures required to evaluate the permeability and compatibility of materials such as metals, elastomers, and polymers used in fuel systems to various fuel blends such as ASTM Reference Fuel C, methanol, auto-oxidized fuels, etc. Apparatus Require

3、d HDPE Bottles with Screw Caps Test Tubes 200 mL capacity with 34/45 ground glass joints. Water Jacketed Condensers Heaters Oil baths, or aluminum aging blocks, all with appropriate temperature controllers. For temperatures above 60C, aging containers such as Parr reaction vessels should be used. Ov

4、ens The aging ovens for dryout should be class A type with fuel handling capability. Circulating Hot Water Bath Bath must be capable of maintaining a temperature of 60C (90C for diesel fuel). Materials Required Samples As appropriate for the desired material, property under evaluation, and/or as spe

5、cified by the engineering document. If possible, use part or cut down parts for test samples. Page 2 of 5 Method A - Metal Corrosion and Coated Metal Adhesion Setup Fuel Blend: As spe

6、cified in FLTM AZ 105-02 Temperature: 60 +/- 2 C (90 +/- 2 C for diesel fuel) Time: 6 months Sample Preparation Scribe coated coupons to the substrate with an “X“ on the top and bottom per ASTM D 3359 Method A -X-cut tape test. Stamp one end of each coupon with an identifying number. The stamped end

7、 is considered the top of the coupon. Label the test bottles or screw-caps using the IDs stamped on the coupons, or any other identification that will assure that samples and bottles do not get mixed up. Extra samples of each material should be kept untested for comparison purposes and post test eva

8、luations if necessary. Test Procedure Conduct all testing in a properly ventilated area. Be sure to agitate the fuel mixture storage container just prior to filling each bottle; very rapid phase separations occur with some of the fuel/methanol blends. Test two samples per fuel (2 samples each per 7

9、fuels - 14 samples total). Place one coupon in the corresponding High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) bottle so that the stamped end is at the top. Fill with the appropriate test fuel until half the sample is covered with fuel. During the test, this will assure that the sample will be subjected to liqui

10、d fuel on the bottom half and vapor on the top half. Repeat this step for the remaining samples and fuels. Tighten the screw-on polypropylene caps and retighten the next day after reaching soak temperature to assure the best possible seal. Place all bottles in the circulating hot water bath set at 6

11、0C (90 C for diesel fuel). Use a separating mechanism and a heavy top to keep the bottles from floating. Inspect the coupons every two weeks. 12、d Copyright 2009, Ford Global Technologies, Inc. Page 3 of 5 Replace all the fluids every two weeks. Replace all the HDPE bottles every 6 weeks. Test duration is 6 months. Photograph the samples every 4 weeks. Photograph the samples in pairs, i.e., both samples in the same fuel side by side in the s

13、ame photograph. To conserve resources, two pairs of samples can be photographed together. Judging from previous tests, if any samples exhibit unusual deterioration, discoloration, corrosion, etc., please contact the requesting engineer. Evaluation All evaluations are to be made by the same person th

14、roughout the duration of the test. At every two week inspection, take detailed notes on each sample. Identify rust on bare edges, rust pits, various white deposits, staining or discoloration, blistering, powdery rust which wipes off easily, rust in scribes, changes in texture and any other deteriora

15、tion in both liquid and vapor phases, run tape adhesion test per ASTM D 3359 on X-scribe and record rating. See SDS requirement MA-0152 for evaluation acceptability. Method B - Plastics and Elastomers Setup Fuel Blend: as specified in FLTM AZ 105-02 Temperature: 60 +/- 2C Time: Ref Fuel C 360 h Auto oxidized fuel 360 h Oxygenated Blends 2000 h Method 1. Place samples and test fuel in a closed system to prevent evapor

17、ation. 2. Agitate the test fuel completely, once per day. 3. Completely immerse the samples being evaluated. The test specimen should be dried for 4 h at 100 +/- 2 C each time the fuel is changed (see Table 1 for special Elastomer tests and frequencies). 5. The first time that the fuel is changed, perform an

19、 unwashed gum content (ISO 6246/ASTM D 381) on the waste fuel, and report the quantity. If the value exceeds 500 mg/100mL report the composition (by infrared) of the material. If there is a solid residue or flocculate present, perform washed gums on the residue and report the quantity and compositio

20、n if the washed gums exceeds 10 mg/100 ml of fuel. Evaluation Report visual observations and mechanical properties as received, and before and after each dry-out period. Report any changes in the liquid fuel including color change, precipitate formation, etc. Elastomers: Hardness: (ISO 868/ASTM D 22

21、40, instantaneous, plied-up specimen.) 25、 Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 C and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Chemicals, materials

26、, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
