Cockman Application This test method is used to determine the effect of various water based fluids, such as ethylene glycol based engine coolan

2、ts, at elevated temperatures, on the mechanical properties of elastomeric compounds and automotive parts. Apparatus Required Erlenmeyer Extraction Flasks 100 mL, 500 mL, 250 mL - with tapered ground glass neck. Water Cooled Condenser Ground Glass Joint Adapters Hot Plate Boiling Chips or Glass Boili

3、ng Beads Specimen Hanger 1 mm dia stainless steel wire. Glass Beads 6 mm dia with 1 mm dia hole. To be used to separate specimens on wire hanger Graduates 1 x 500 mL; 1 x 10 mL Specimen Preparation A. Slab Stock. Thickness 2.00 mm +/- 0.1 mm per ASTM D 15 1. Prepare three tensile specimens from one

4、flat vulcanized sheet using Die C per ASTM D 412. Remove approx 3 mm from each end giving a total length of 100 mm. Punch 2 mm hole approx 5 mm from both ends to permit assembly on wire hanger. 5、ume specimens from same sheet as in Step 1 above using a 25.4 x 50.8 mm die cutter per ASTM D 471. Punch 2 mm hole approx 5 mm from one end to permit assembly on wire hanger. 3. Volume of each tensile specimen is approx 2.82 cm3 and each volume specimen is approx 2.50 cm3. This total volume of three

6、 tensile plus three volume specimens is approx 16 cm3. B. Large Diameter Hoses such as Upper and Lower Radiator Hoses 1. Separate tube from remainder of hose. Lay flat and buff smooth to remove braid marks per ASTM D 15. 2. Prepare three tensile and three volume specimens from same section of hose a

7、s in Section A above. C. Small Diameter Hoses such as Heater Hoses 1. Separate tube per Section B-I above. 2. Prepare three tensile and three volume specimens from consecutive lengths of hose as in Section A. D. Automotive Parts such as Water Pump Seal Boots 1. A minimum of three parts shall be sele

8、cted and sectioned if necessary to obtain a total volume of 16 +/- 1 cm3 (equivalent to the volume of three tensile and three volume specimens). If the volume of these parts are below 15 cm3, additional parts may be added or the volume of solution used may be reduced proportionately and tested in al

9、ternate containers as described in Procedure, Part B, below. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 OC and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the sam

For Three Tensile and Three Volume Specimens 1. Prepare an exact amount of solution for each test, introducing the constituents directly into the bo

11、iling flask as follows: Long life coolant concentrate SSM-97B-91 O1 -A Distilled water 900 cc total solution must be used. Percent of coolant and distilled water as specified in Engineering Material Specification. 900 cm3 test solution per 16 cm3 of specimen volume is equivalent to 56.3 cm3 of solut

12、ion per 1 cm3 of specimen. If full size specimens could not be obtained from hose samples as described above, total specimen volume must be determined and test solution volume adjusted at 56.3 cm3 of solution per 1 cm3 of specimen. 2. Cover the bottom of the flask with a layer of 50 cm boiling chips

13、 or 3 glass beads. 3. Mount specimens on stainless steel wire specimen hanger as shown in the attached drawing. Separate samples as shown with 6 mm diameter glass beads at top and bottom to prevent touching and nesting. Alternate tensile specimens with volume specimens. 4. Lower samples into the tes

14、t flask containing the agitated and mixed solution. Wire specimen holder may be extended through the reflux condenser to permit depth of immersion adjustment. Bottom of tensile specimens should be 15 mm above the boiling chips or beads. 5. Assemble reflux condenser to the flask using a suitable grea

15、se to maintain a seal and adjust flow of cooling water through the condenser. 6. Place flask on a hot plate and raise temperature of the solution to boiling. Adjust heat so that a gentle mixing boil is obtained and the condenser reflux rate is 20 +/- 10 drops per minute. 7. Allow to boil for prescri

16、bed times as required in the test or material specification. 8. Cool flask and solution to 23 +/- 2 C. 9. Remove specimens from test solution and blot dry with facial tissues. 17、Parts or Specimens Prepare as in Procedure A above with the following revisions as required. When mounting parts, separate with glass beads so that they do not touch or rest.
