The penetration gaging depth values (see dimen
3、sional tables for respective head type) are predicated on the gaging of plain finish (unplated or uncoated) screws. However, the penetration values are suitable for the gaging of screws having coating thickness up to and including .0003 inch on significant (Contd. on Page 2-130.02) NOV 1981 PRlNiiD

Screws having heavier coatings, which fail to meet the penetration gaging requirements, must be stripped of finish and be gaged in the plain condition. Penetration is gaged relative to a reference plane defined by the intersection o

This plane is the same as the top surface of a flat head screw but is somewhat below the topmost portion of heads which have rounded top surfaces. Knife edges or tapered ridges on the gage head are used to est+blish the reference
6、 plane. A counter-clockwise reading dial gage is used to indicate the penetration of the gage into the recess. The gage must be zeroed on a flat surface. For the recess to be acceptable, the bit must not raise more than . 015 in. (.4mm) when a torque equal to seventy percent of the minimum torsional
8、 strength of the screw is applied. (A test fixture is located at Physical General Testing, Central Laboratory Services, Metallurgy Department. ) The minimum torsional strength of the screw is to be obtained from the applicable specifications, i. e., ESS-MlA16O-A for tapping screws, or if not availab

The difference between the two readings is equal to the protrusion ffPff of the head beyond the gaging ring. To check hexagon washer head screws, the gaging procedure is exactly the same as for checking hexagon
13、head screws except that the difference between the two readmgs (X) in- cludes the washer thickuess. Therefore, it is necessary to subtract the thickuess of the washer portion from the “X“ dimension to obtain the protrusion ffPc of the hexagon beyond the gaging ring.
