SCOPE The material defined by this specification is a water based rust preventive wax used to improve the corrosion resistance of vehicle cavities (cross or side members, doors, hoods) and gaps (welded joints, flanges). 2. APPLICA

3、TION This specification was released originally to define the properties of cavity waxes applied to the vehicle body after the paint process, prior to final assembly. They provide additional corrosion protection and can compensate weaknesses in the body paint process. The materials are applicable fo

4、r all kinds of metal substrates (CRS, precoated steel, aluminum). The metal surfaces in cavities and gaps are usually not clean but contaminated with residues of drawing lubricants, temporary corrosion protectives or cleaners. They may also be coated with an undefined phosphate coating and/or with a

5、 thin electrocoat layer. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.0 STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTION MATERIALS Material suppliers and part producers must conform to the Companys Standard Requirements For Production Materials (WSS-M99P1111-A). 3.4 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES 3.4.1 Non-Volatile Content, min 50% (FLTM BI 102-01)

6、 3.4.2 Viscosity See Initial Sample A flow diagram to identify the characteristic properties of the material shall be added to the Initial Sample Report, together with a list of the relevant test parameter (temperature, shear rate, time, etc.) and the equipment details. 3.4.3 Density See Initial Sam

Min storage con

8、ditions for all waxes: 6 months at 32 C and 6 months at 5 C Additionally for tropical climates: 3 months at 40 C After the storage, the material shall not show any insoluble separation or coagulation and must meet all specification requirements. 3.5 MATERIAL PROPERTIES 3.5.1 Flow, Material as Suppli

9、ed 100 - 250 mm (FLTM BJ 128-01, 20 C and 40 C) After drying as recommended by the supplier the material must not show any flow. 3.5.2 Creeping Power, min 30 mm (FLTM BJ 128-02, Method A) The creeping power per Method B must be as good as or better than the result per Method A. 3.6 PREPARATION OF TE

10、ST PANELS The back side of test panels shall be protected to avoid excessive rusting during the following resistance tests. Panel edges, being subject of the investigation, shall not be protected by any additional action. 3.6.1 Substrate (FLTM BJ 106-01, solvent wiped) Ford Standard Steel Panels acc

11、ording to SAE J403 Steel or U-MA 18006 and welded test assemblies if not otherwise specified. 3.6.2 Wax Application Prior to application, the wax must be stirred for 15 minutes. Test Panels: The wax shall be applied as recommended by the supplier to provide a homogenous film. Welded Assemblies: An e

12、xcess of wax shall be sprayed to the vertically positioned assemblies to enable the wax creeping into the welded joint. Two minutes after the wax application, the assemblies shall be turned into a horizontal position for drying. 3.6.3 Application Temperature 18 25 C ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATIO

It is fully cured 48 hours after the heat treatment. 3.6.5 Dry Film Thickness 30 - 40 (FLTM BI 156-01 or gravim

14、etrically) micrometer 3.7 PERFORMANCE OF DRY WAX FILM 3.7.1 Surface After drying as recommended by the supplier the wax film shall be sufficiently hard to withstand normal handling during final assembly. It may be tacky but must not contaminate cables, trim parts or clothing. 3.7.2 Water Resistance

15、The corrosion protective film shall be resistant against water impingement immediately after drying. 3.7.3 Temperature Resistance, max 5 mm flow (1 h at 110 +/- 2 C) Test Method: Apply wax to 1/2 of an painted panel (mark the edge) and allow to dry as required by the supplier. After drying allow 6 h

16、 aging at room temperature. Place the panel for 1 h vertically in a convection oven, coated side up. 3.7.4 Crack Resistance No cracks (FLTM BJ 128-03, 72 h at 23 +/- 2 C) No cracks, voids or shrinkage allowed. 3.7.5 Low Temperature Resistance No cracking (ASTM D 522, Method B, - 20 C) Test Method: P

17、repare test panels per para 3.4 and place them in a cold box for 24 h, together with a mandrel of 30 mm diameter. While in the cold box, bend the panels 180 over the mandrel. 3.8 CORROSION RESISTANCE, LABORATORY Tests shall be performed on original parts, test panels or welded assemblies as required

18、 in the applicable material specification. Lab test results are predominated by a successful proving ground evaluation. 19、 for CRS only) Perform Salt Spray test on test panels and on welded assemblies as described in para 5.2. Evaluation (after removing of the corrosion protective): No corrosion on the panel surface and in the flange of the test assembly and not more than 3 mm rust creepage from edges. 3.8.2 Resistanc

20、e to Scab Corrosion, min (FLTM BI 123-01) Zn-coated steel 10 cycles CRS 3 cycles Evaluation after removing of the corrosion protective: No corrosion on the panel surface and not more than 3 mm rust creepage from edges. 3.8.3 Humidity Resistance 120 h (40 +/- 2 C and 98 +/- 2% r.h.) Test Method: Prep

21、are test panels and place them in a humidity cabinet (condensing water on corrosion panel surface), 15 - 30 to the vertical. Evaluation: No rust on the panel surface and not more than 3 mm rust creepage from edges; no blisters, no slipping of the corrosion protective or any damages of the film allow

22、ed. Slight dulling may be accepted if reversible within 24 h after test end. 3.9 CORROSION RESISTANCE, PROVING GROUND New materials require LPG/APG approval prior to introduction. The test details including the number of test cycles are determined by Materials Engineering, AVT. Results from the prov

23、ing ground evaluation predominate lab test results. 3.10 REMOVAL The wax film must be removable from automotive topcoats at any time without damaging the painted surface. The supplier must recommend a suitable solvent or cleaning process. 3.11 STAINING ON PAINTED SURFACES (FLTM BJ 128-04, oven only)

24、 Substrates: Ford Standard steel panels and plastic panels or actual production parts, painted with current production as well as repair top coats; white and silver metallic. Evaluation: The wax must not stain, soften, lift, or otherwise degrade current production or repair paint materials. ENGINEER

The supplier must inform Ford about

26、 any restriction in materials used for the facility. 5. GENERAL INFORMATION The information given below is provided for clarification and assistance in meeting the requirements of this specification 5.1 MATERIAL REFERENCE All related materials used for approval of corrosion protective wax according

27、to this specification, e.g. substrate materials, paint materials, solvents, etc. as well as the application parameter (viscosity, film thickness, drying conditions) shall be noted in the Initial Sample Report of the wax. 5.2 TEST ASSEMBLIES Test assemblies shall be prepared from U-MA 001-18001/6 Standard Panels according to the following sketch to simulate flanges, edges and joints of a vehicle body. ooSpot WeldingPointsoo200 mmoo100 mm 15 mm9015 mm 15 mm
