Unless otherwise swecified (see 6.2), before production is commenced, a sample of the finished item and each component wart conforming to the requirements of this specification shall be offered for approval of the con
15、tracting officer or his authorized representative. Approval of the preproduction sample authorizes the commencement of production, but does not relieve the contractor of responsibility from compliance with all other applicable provisions of this specif i ca tion. 3.2 Materials. The materials used in
16、 construction of the rack shall be of the kind and quality specified herein. 3.2.1 Adhesives. The adhesives to be used shall be any adhesive that will develop an average block shear strength of not less than 2,800 pounds per square inch when tested as specified in 4.3.1.1. 3.2.2 Solid wood. 3.2.2.1
17、Varieties. The varieties of wood used in the construction of the book display rack shall be one of the following species: beech, birch, cherry, maple, pecan, walnut, hickory, and mahogany (American and African only). i 2 . A few small burls, pin-knots averaging not more than two per square foot, mineral streaks a maximum of 1/16 inch by 4 inches, or 1/8 inch by 2 inches in area and averaging not more than one per squ
19、are foot, will be permitted. 3.2.2.3 Seasoning. All wood parts shall be uniformly kiln dried to a moisture content of 5 to 8 percent and shall be stored in properly controlled atmosphere to I ci. assure uniform distribution and stresses that impair serviceability or finished appearance; I *- 3.2.3 F

The stain shall consist of an organic dye in an organic solvent and shall not cause failure to finish panels in ultraviolet resistance test specified in 4.3.1.1. 3.2.3.3 Lacquer. The lacquer shall co

22、 The design of the book display rack shall be as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The overall dimensions of the book rack shall be 22 inches wide by 12 inches deep by 30 inches high, excluding glides. The principal component
25、parts of the book display racks shall be end panels, trough members and base reinforcement strips. The end panels and trough members shall be made of full length strips of solid wood, specified in 3.2.2, not greater than 6 inches or less than 2 inches wide, except that one edge strip may be not less
26、 than 1 inch wide. be carefully selected for similar grain and color and shall be edge joined with continuous tongue and groove construction. Alternatively, matched square edge joints may be used for the end panels. members shall be 13/16 inch, minimum. The trough members shall be joined together by
27、 tongue and groove and shall be tenoned on the ends to fit the mortises on the end panels. All pieces shall be securely glued using adhesives, specified in 3.2.1. The base reinforcement strip shall be of one piece of solid wood, specified in 3.2.2, and shall be 3/4 inch thick by 2 inches wide, minim
28、um, A base reinforcernent strip shall be securely glued to the bottom inside face of each end panel, In addition, it shall be secured by countersunk screws (No. 10 size, minimum), specified in 3.2.4.2. The screws shall be positioned as shown in Figure 2. All exposed corners and edges shall be eased
29、with the exception of the top corners of the end panels and the top edge of the base reinforcement strips which shall be rounded to a radius of approximately 1/2 inch. The grain pattern of all component parts shall run the long direction of the part. The solid wood strips shall The thickness of the
30、end panels and trough 3.3.5 Method of finishing wood surfaces. The wood surfaces shall be finished 3.3.5.1 Exposed wood surfaces. All wood surfaces normally exposed to view shall be finish sanded smooth and all corners and edges eased, thoroughly cleaned, and finished as follows: 1. Sap stain to equ
31、alize color. 2. Apply selected colorant to produce color specified. Stain, specified in 3.2.3.2, and colorant shall conform to tests specified in 4.3.1.1. 3. Wash coat with adhesive sealer. Sealer shall withstand toughness and adhesion test specified in 4.3.1.1 without whitening or cracking. 4. Scuf
32、f sand, using sandpaper grit of fineness needed to produce proper surface. 5. Fill to degree necessary to match standard reference panel. specified in 3.2.3.1, shall conform to the test specified in 4.3.1.1. 6. Seal with adhesive type sealer. Sealer shall withstand toughness and adhesion test specif
33、ied in 4.3.1.1 without whitening or cracking. 7. Sand, using sandpaper grit of fineness needed to produce proper surface. 8.-Shade to tie-in color variation, if necessary. Shading shall conform to the test specified in 4.3.1.1. 9. Top coat with lacquer (2 coats). The lacquer, specified in 3.2.3.3, a
34、nd finish shall be of a quality to meet the requirements specified in 4.3.1.1. The filler, NOTE: The natural grain of the wood shall not be clouded by the finishing materials. Bleaching agents or materials shall not be used. The application of materials, drying time, sanding, cleaning and rubbing sh
35、all be controlled to produce items of smooth, uniform exposed surfaces without blisters, pits, wrinkles, runs, tackiness or more than a trace of orange peel. 3.3.5.2 Unexposed surfaces. Operation number 8 may be performed where shown or after operation number 5. The bottom edge of the end panels and
36、 base reinforcement strip shall be machined smooth and cleaned and stained a uniform walnut color. A coat of adhesive sealer shall be applied. 38、 racks shall conform to the level of quality established herein. 1 4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS 4.1 General quality assurance provisions. 4.1.1 Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the supplier is responsible for the performance of all inspe
39、ction requirements as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified, the supplier may utilize his own facilities or any commercial laboratory acceptable to the Government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are
40、deemed necessary to assure that supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements. 4.1.2 Government verification. All quality assurance operations performed by the contractor shall be subject0 Government verification at unscheduled intervals. Verification shall consist of surveillance of the
41、operations to determine whether the practices, methods, and procedures of the written inspection plan are being properly applied, and Government product inspection, to measure quality of product offered for acceptance. Deviation from the prescribed or agreed-upon procedures, or instances of poor pra
42、ctices that might have an effect on the quality of the product will be immediately called to the attention of the contractor. Failure of the contractor to promptly correct the deficiencies discovered shall be cause for suspension of acceptance until the correction has been made or until conformance
43、of product to prescribed criteria has been demonstrated. To avoid interference with operations, the contractor shall designate a responsible official, OP officials, to whom the Government inspector will report such instances. the completely fabricated item for all provisions of this specification. 4
44、.2 Preproduction sample inspection. Examination and testing shall be made on 4.3 Sampling for inspection and acceptance. Sampling and inspection shall be performed in accordance with the provisions set forth in MIL-STD-105, except where otherwise indicated hereinafter. 4.3.1 Inspection of materials
45、and components. In accordance with 4.1, the supplier is responsible for insuring that materials and Components used were manufactured, tested, and inspected in accordance with the requirements of referenced subsidiary specifications and standards to the extent specified, or if none, in accordance wi
