VERTICAL CABLE TRAY FLAME TEST 1.0 Scope 1.1 This guide describes a method for testing grouped cables via a ver- tical tray flame test to determine their relative ability to resist flame propagatio

6、n in the following defined test. 1.2 The ability of a cable to resist propagation to the top of the tray does not guarantee that propagation of that same cable cannot occur under installed conditions during an actual fire nor does it pre- clude the need for other fire suppressive systems. 2.0 Summar

7、y of Method 2.1 Multiple lengths of cables are attached to a vertical tray and are subjected to a defined propane gas flame for a specified time pe- riod. At the end of the time period the amount of burn damage to the cables is determined. 3.0 Flame Test Facility 3.1 The test should be conducted in

8、a naturally ventilated room or enclo- sure free rom excessive drafts or spurious air currents. operation there should be sufficient ventilation so that burning is not limited by a build-up of combustion products or by a dearth of make-up air. During 4.0 Apparatus 4.1 The test tray should be a vertic

9、al ladder type steel cable tray 12 inches wide by 8 ft. long. (nominal) deep with one inch flanges and 0.060 inches thick. rungs should be 1 by 1/2 inches U-shaped channels, 0.125 inches thick and welded to the side rails at 9 inches on center. ICEA T-29-520 8b W 9007034 OOOLObL 482 ICEA Project T-29-520 Page 2 4.2 The 10-inch ribbon gas burner and air gas Venturi mixer shall be by American Gas Furnace Company, catalog numbers 1OL 11-55 and 14-18, respectively, or equivalents. 4.3 The air and gas flow shall be measured by separa

11、te flow meters. Meters should have a resolution of five standard cubic foot per hour (SCFH) or better. 4.4 The fuel should be natural grade propane of hown heat of combustion. 5.0 Specimen Cables 5.1 N cable specimens each eight feet in length should be arranged in a single layer filling at least th

12、e center six-inch portion of the tray with a separation of one-half the cable diameter between cables. The number of cable specimens should be calculated using the following formula: N = 4/D + 0.33 Where N = number of cables (rounded up to the nearest whole number) D = diameter of cable in inches 5.

13、2 The cables should be attached to each tray rung starting with the bottom rung, by the use of copper or steel ties no smaller than .040“ or larger than .064“ in diameter (see Figure 1). 6.0 Test Setup 6.1 The loaded metal tray should be positioned within the test enclosure so that no tray surface i

14、s closer than 12 inches to any enclosure wall. 6.2 The burner should be mounted horizontally 12 k i inches above the base of the tray with the burner face parallel with the back (rung side) of the tray and 8ki inches from the nearest cable surface (see Figure 1). 15、19 ICEA Project T-29-520 Page 3 6.3 The flow meters to the burner should indicate an air flow of 105 SCEX (+lo, -0) and an appropriate gas flow to provide a theoretical heat in- put of 210,000 Btulhr. , f5% (approximately 84 SCFH) . heat input should be determined using the following formula: The th

16、eoretical HT = 3xWxQC Where HT = theoretical heat input, Btu/hr. W = propane consumed in 20 minutes, lbs. (approximately 3.3 lb.) Qc = propane heat of combustion, Btu/lb. (approximately 21,500 Btu/lb.) 6.4 The cable samples should be at a temperature pot lower than 50F immediately prior to flame ign

17、ition. be at a temperature not less than 50F. The incoming air should also 7.0 Test Procedure 7.1 The test enclosure should be purged of any residual smoke or products of combustion. 7.2 The weight of the propane consumed during the test should be measured. 7.3 With prudent attention to the potentia

18、l risks and observing all nec- essary safety precautions, the burner should be ignited. should impinge on the cables approximately midway between tray rungs. The flame 7.4 The air and gas flow should be monitored and adjusted as necessary throughout the test to maintain the required flow settings. 7

19、.5 After 20 minutes the burner should be extinguished. Any afterburn on the cables should be allowed to continue until no flame is visible.
