Change Notice: Replaced “International Truck and Engine Corporation” with “Navistar, Inc.” per corporate directive. 1.0 SCOPE This is a method for determining the nonvolatile (solids) content of paint on a volume basis. 2.0 APPARATUS 2.1 Recirculating oven capable of maintaining the specifi

5、ed temperature within + 3C (+ 5F) 2.2 Balance with a sensitivity of + 0.0001 gram 2.3 No. 4 Ford Cup per ASTM D 1200 2.4 Glass syringe, 5 ml capacity, B-D Luer Lok No. 5YL, or equivalent 2.5 Desiccator 3.0 MATERIAL 3.1 3Solvent, SC-150, or equivalent; or water, if appropriate 3.2 Aluminum discs, 50

6、mm (2 inches) in diameter, 1.588 mm (0.0625 inch) thick, with a 3.18 mm (0.125 inch) hole near the edge 3.3 Weighing wires 3.4 Acetone or methyl alcohol 3.5 25 percent Aerosol ”OT” 3.6 Distilled water 3.7 Aluminum foil pan, 60 millimeters in diameter, Wilkens-Anderson No. 29025, or equivalent 3.8 Ab

7、sorbent paper, Kleenex, Kimwipes, or equivalent 4.0 PROCEDURE 4.1 Run this test three times for each paint sample being tested. 4.2 Using appropriate solvent, adjust approximately 150 milliliters of paint which has been prepared for testing according to the steps outlined in CEMS G-5, Part I, Sectio

8、n B under ”Sampling Procedure”, to a viscosity, as measured with a No. 4 Ford Cup per ASTM D 1200, of + 1 second of the minimum as received viscosity specified on the appropriate grade sheet in CEMS G-5. 4.3 Determine the nonvolatile content by weight of the adjusted paint from step 4.2 using Test M

9、ethod GT-1A. Record this as value W. 4.4 Clean three aluminum discs in acetone or methyl alcohol, dry in an oven at 104 + 1C (220 + 2F) for ten minutes and cool to 21 to 27C (70 to 80F). AUGUST 2009 Page 2 of 2 4.5 Attach a weighing wire to the disc and determine the total weight of the wire and the disc in air to +0.0001 gram. Record this as weight A1. 4.6 Prepare a solution of 2 drops of 25 percent Aerosol ”OT”

12、 per 100 milliliters of distilled water. 4.7 Weigh the disc and wire in the solution from step 4.6 to +0.0001 gram and record as weight C1. 4.8 Dip the disc in acetone or methyl alcohol and dry with absorbent paper. 4.9 Dip the disc in adjusted paint from step 4.2. Remove any beads which may have fo

13、rmed by lightly touching the disc with absorbent paper. 4.10 Dry the coated disc in a circulating oven at 118 + 3C (245 + 5F) for two hours, remove and cool to 21 to 27C (70 to 80F). 4.11 Weigh the coated disc and wire in air to 0.0001 gram and record as weight A2. 4.12 Weigh the coated disc and wir

14、e in the solution from step 4.6 and record as weight C2. 4.13 Determine the weight per gallon of the adjusted test paint from step 4.2 using Method 4184.1 found in Federal Test Method Standard No. 141a. Record this as value Y. 5.0 CALCULATIONS 5.1 Calculate the specific gravity of the adjusted paint

15、: Specific gravity= Y8.33 5.2 Calculate the nonvolatile content of the paint on a volume basis for each of the three test runs: Percent nonvolatile content by volume = (A2-C2)-(A1-C1)Specific gravityW(A2-A1) x 100 6.0 REPORT Report the minimum percent nonvolatile content by volume obtained from the three test runs.
