4、Change Notice: Replaced “International Truck and Engine Corporation” with “Navistar, Inc.” per corporate directive. 1.0 SCOPE This is a method to evaluate the ability of a catalyzed paint to produce satisfactory dry film properties. 2.0 APPARATUS 2.1 No. 4 Ford Cup per ASTM D 1200. 2.2 Siphon or pre

5、ssure type spray gun. 2.3 Recirculating oven capable of maintaining the specified temperature within + 3C (+ 5F). 2.4 Micrometer or other accurate thickness gage. 3.0 MATERIAL 3.1 Bonderite CD-10 or Bonderite 958 zinc phosphated steel panels, 100 x 150 mm (4 x 6 inches), available from Advanced Coat

6、ings Technologies, 273 Industrial Drive, Hillsdale, Michigan 49242. 3.2 An appropriate reducer 3.3 Catalyst Type and amount as recommended by the paint manufacturer. 4.0 PROCEDURE 4.1 Prepare twenty-four panels according to the procedure specified for the applicable grade in Test Method GT-13, Panel

7、 Preparation. 4.2 Using an appropriate reducer, dilute one liter of paint which has been prepared for testing according to the steps outlined in CEMS G-5, Part I, Section B, under ”Sampling Procedure”, to a viscosity, as measured with a No. 4 Ford Cup per ASTM D 1200, of 19 + 1 seconds for paints co

8、ntaining metallic pigments or 22 + 1 seconds for paints not containing metallic pigments. 4.3 Add the appropriate amount of catalyst to the adjusted paint from step (2). 4.4 For paints containing metallic pigments, spray all 24 panels from step (1) with adjusted catalyzed paint from step (3) at 21 t

9、o 27C (70 to 80F) using a siphon or pressure gun set at 552 kPa (80 psi). For paints not containing metallic pigments, spray all 24 panels from step (1) with adjusted catalyzed paint from step (3) at 21 to 27C (70 to 80F) using a siphon or pressure gun set at 414 to 483 kPa (60 to 70 psi). Apply a f

10、irst coat of enamel, flash dry for three to four minutes, then apply a second coat of enamel. For paints containing metallic pigments, a thin third coat is recommended. All panels will be uniformly coated and free from sags, runs, wrinkles or other irregularities. Copyright Navistar International Co

AUGUST 2009 Page 2 of 2 4.5 Dry the panels in a horizontal position for five minutes in still air at 21 to 27C (70 to 80F), then place in a recirculating oven a

13、t 93 + 3C (200 + 5F) for 30 minutes. Remove and cool to 21 to 27C (70 to 80F). 4.6 Determine the dry film thickness of the coat of catalyzed enamel applied to each panel by measuring the total thickness of the panels from step (5) with a micrometer or other accurate thickness gage, and subtracting f

14、rom this the total thickness of the panels originally prepared in step (1). Panels suitable for further testing according to this method will exhibit a dry film thickness of catalyzed enamel of 38 to 51 m (1.5 to 2.0 mil). 4.7 Divide the 24 panels from step (6) into twelve groups of two panels each.

15、 4.8 Perform the following tests using one group of two panels for each test procedure: 4.8.1 CEMS GT-21 Air dry, CEMS GT-22 Forced Dry or Baking 4.8.2 CEMS GT-4B, Color Stability of Paint 4.8.3 CEMS GT-4C, Toughness of Paint 4.8.4 CEMS GT-4D, Hardness of Paint 4.8.5 CEMS GT-5A, Adhesion of Paint 4.

16、8.6 CEMS GT-5B, Intercoat Adhesion of Paint 4.8.7 SAE J400 Gravelometer Test for Paint 4.8.8 CEMS -7D, Salt Spray Test for Paint 4.8.9 CEMS -7E, Humidity Test for Paint 4.8.10 CEMS -7F, South Florida Exposure Test for Paint 4.8.11 CEMS GT-7H, Xylene - Mineral Spirits Immersion Test for Paints 4.8.12

17、 CEMS GT-7J, Ethylene Glycol Immersion Test for Paint 4.9 Perform the following tests using any of the above panels: 4.9.1 CEMS -6B, Initial Gloss of Paint 4.9.2 Federal Standard 141a, Method 4250, Color 4.10 The paint will pass if the dry film of the catalyzed enamel meets the requirements listed f

18、or the dry film properties of the corresponding uncatalyzed enamel on the applicable grade sheet from CEMS G-5, Paints, with the following exceptions: 4.10.1 The hardness of the dry film of the catalyzed enamel will be 2B, minimum. 4.10.2 The minimum gloss at 60 degrees after South Florida exposure

19、for the catalyzed enamel will be ten points lower than the corresponding values shown for the uncatalyzed enamel on the applicable grade sheet. 5.0 REPORT Report whether the paint passes or fails this test.
