Reference: File 30-13E Keywords: Chromium Plating, Chrome Plating, Aluminum 1.0 APPLICATION This specification covers bright decorative, corrosion resistant, electroplated coatings of copper, nickel, and chromium suita

5、ble for use on aluminum substrates, including SPF (superplastic formed) aluminum. These coatings are used in exterior applications exposed to severe service conditions including scratching, denting, and abrasion, such as bumpers and grilles. 2.0 SCOPE This specification covers base metal requirement

6、s, plating appearance, thickness and electrochemical potential requirements, corrosion resistance, adhesion, qualification, source approval and quality control, and shipping and handling requirements. 2.1 Restricted Chemical Substances Effective January 1, 2007, all product supplied to the requireme

7、nts of this specification must comply with the requirements of the CEMS B-50 specification. 3.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS Unless otherwise specified the latest issue of all referenced standards shall apply. 9、r is responsible for procuring the aluminum base metal of the specified composition and with an appropriate surface quality suitable to provide the required surface finish, luster and corrosion resistance of the plated part. OCTOBER 2009 Page 2 of 8 4.1.1 Base Metal Processing Finishing of the base metal may be performed before or after forming. Significant surfaces (i.e., Class A)* on the formed part shall be free of stretch mark

12、s, die marks, nicks, scratches or other defects affecting the appearance of the plated parts. Buffing of the final chromium plating is not permitted. * Engineering may designate the significant (Class A) surfaces on the engineering drawing and may also specify on the drawing check points (C points)

13、for specific evaluation of the plating thickness. Unless otherwise specified, significant surfaces are those surfaces directly visible or visible by reflection when the finished part is assembled on the truck and/or those surfaces which can be a source of corrosion products which are visible either

14、directly or by reflection. 4.2 Plating Requirements 4.2.1 Appearance Plated parts shall exhibit a bright and uniformly reflective finish. The plating shall be smooth and free of stains, pin holes, buffing and polishing lines or other defects affecting the plated appearance or the ability of the plat

15、ing to pass required corrosion tests. The appearance of production parts shall match color and finish of the master samples as agreed upon between the NAVISTAR Plant Quality Control Department and the supplier. Chrome plated aluminum bumpers must meet the acceptance criteria described in Table 2. 4.

16、2.1.1 Field service experience has indicated that some trivalent chromium plating systems produce a plated surface susceptible to premature tarnishing. Use of trivalent chromium is not permitted unless supplier has sufficient field data to demonstrate the capability of their trivalent chromium syste

17、m. 4.2.2 Thickness - ASTM B 487 and ASTM B 764 Requirements for minimum plating thickness are described in Table 1. Plating thickness may be determined by the microscopic method of ASTM B 487 or the electrochemical method of ASTM B 764. In the event of conflict, the microscopic method shall be the r

There is no minimum Ni strike thickness requirement as long

20、as plating adhesion and appearance are not compromised and minimum Total Ni thickness requirement is met. * Microporous chrome deposits may be plated on either “Duplex” (semi-bright + bright nickel) or “Triple-Layer” nickel deposits. Triple layer deposits incorporate a high sulfur (0.15 mass % S) in

21、termediate nickel layer. Duplex deposits do not. * A maximum of 0.5 m (.00002 inch) thickness is recommended to prevent bridging of the non-conducting particles used to produce microporous chrome. (1) The minimum thicknesses shown in Table 1 apply to specified check points (C-points) or, in the abse

22、nce of indicated check points, apply to all significant surfaces. 24、he semi-bright nickel thickness shall be no less than 60% of total nickel thickness, and the combined thickness of the bright nickel and special nickel layer added to provide discontinuities in chrome shall be no less than 20% of total nickel thickness. When triple layer nickel is used, the semi-bri

25、ght nickel thickness shall be no less than 50% of the total thickness and the high-sulfur intermediate layer shall be no more than 10% of the total thickness, and the combined thickness of the bright and special nickel layer added to provide discontinuities in chrome shall be no less than 30% of the

26、 total nickel thickness. 4.2.2.2 The thickness of the plating layers is dependent upon the nature of the chrome deposited as described. 4.2.2.3 Due to the complex geometry of highly formed parts, such as exhaust pipes and bumpers, there may be a vast difference in the plated thickness between low an

27、d high current density locations. It may not be practical and/or cost effective to meet the minimum thickness in low current density locations on these parts. In such cases, the supplier shall request a plating thickness deviation from Materials Engineering Department at Truck Development and Techno

28、logy Center. With the approval of Materials Engineering, an average of plating thickness at specified check points (C-points) may be used to meet the minimum plating thickness. However, at no location on the part will the plating thickness be below 60% of the minimum thickness specified. 4.2.2.4 Eng

29、ineering exceptions to the minimum plating thickness requirements described herein shall be shown on the engineering drawing. 4.2.3 STEP Test Requirements - ASTM B 764 4.2.3.1 The bright nickel layer shall exhibit a minimum of 100mV anodic potential difference to the semi- bright nickel layer on all

30、 significant surfaces as determined per the STEP (Simultaneous Thickness and Electrode Potential) test method. 4.2.3.2 The microdiscontinuous top nickel layer shall be equal to or more noble than the bright nickel layer but it shall not exhibit an electrochemical potential difference greater than 30

31、mV. 4.2.3.3 The middle, high-sulfur (highly active) nickel layer used in triple-layer coatings shall be less noble than (anodic to) the bright nickel layer and exhibit an electrochemical potential difference of 15-35mV. 4.2.4 Chrome Microporosity - ASTM B 456 The microporous chrome layer shall exhib

32、it a minimum of 10,000 pores/cm2 as determined by the copper deposition (Dubpernell) method as described in ASTM B 456, or a minimum of 2000 pores/cm2 as determined by active corrosion sites when tested per ASTM B 456. 4.2.5 Ductility - ASTM B 490 The bottom (semi-bright) nickel layer shall have a m

33、inimum ductility of 67% and the top (bright) nickel layer shall have a minimum ductility of 11% as described in ASTM B 490. 4.3 Corrosion Resistance - ASTM B 368 Plated parts will be subjected to copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS) test per ASTM B 368 with the following exceptions: Copy

Scribe the sample to the base metal using an “X” mark with 75 mm (3 in) legs. 2. After testing for 66 hours, r

36、inse the surface in warm water and air-dry. Clean the surface with a soft camel hair brush saturated with a mild detergent solution. Rinse the sample in warm water and wipe gently with a soft cloth. Evaluate immediately. 4.3.1 Requirements 4.3.1.1 There shall be no undercutting or peeling of the pla

37、ting around the scribe mark. 4.3.1.2 There shall be no evidence of base metal corrosion deposits or blisters on the significant surfaces. 4.3.1.3 No corrosion pits larger than 1.5 mm (0.062 in) are permitted on the significant surfaces. 4.4 Adhesion - ASTM B 571 Perform bend tests and grind-saw test

38、s per ASTM B 571. 4.4.1 Requirements No peeling, flaking, or lift-off of the plating from the substrate or between layers of the plating is permitted. 5.0 QUALIFICATION Engineering qualification of plating sources is required in advance of production shipments. Suppliers shall submit samples for app

39、roval of finish, luster, color and appearance to the Industrial Design Group at Truck Development and Technology Center. Samples shall be accompanied by test data certifying that all requirements of the specification have been met. Upon approval, styling master samples denoting the minimum level of

40、acceptable appearance quality shall be developed and retained by the supplier and the quality department of each using NAVISTAR facility. 5.1 Quality Control Plan A Quality Control Plan for products supplied to the requirements of this specification will be established by mutual agreement between In

41、ternational and the supplier. Unless specific exception is noted, the following characteristics, where applicable*, shall be included in the plan as features for management by statistical process control.* * Other characteristics for inclusion in the control plan may be specified on the engineering

42、drawing and/or purchase order. * See NAVISTAR Engineering Design Standard A-16 6.0 SOURCE APPROVAL AND QUALITY CONTROL 6.1 Supplier Requirements All suppliers to NAVISTAR are required to be registered to ISO 9001 Quality System Requirements. NAVISTAR will also accept TS-16949 registration as long as

43、 the supplier can also fulfill all AIAG PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) documentation and approval requirements. OCTOBER 2009 Page 5 of 8 maintain their certification with an accredited registrar and must furnish copies of registration certificates to their Corporate Buyer upon request. 6.2 Approval Parts supplied against contracts or purchase orders citing this spec

46、ification shall be equivalent in all respects to those samples which were approved by the purchaser. No changes in formulation or processing practices are permitted without approval. In the event that changes in material, properties, processing practices, construction, color, or labeling of the prod

47、uct are required, the supplier shall notify Truck Development and Technology Center and NAVISTAR Purchasing and Supplier Development of the proposed change(s). Test data indicating conformance to all requirements of this specification, test samples, and new or amended or updated Material Safety Data

48、 Sheet(s) (MSDS), in accordance with CFR Title 29, Part 1910 shall be submitted with the request for change. 6.3 Process Control The supplier shall either perform and report results of tests on specific lots of parts produced using ISO 9001 or TS-16949 guidelines, or provide statistical evidence of the lot having been produced in a state of statistical control and with a process capable of p
