16、 used to make connections to existing mains. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This Standard Practice covers the performance and design requirements of gray-iron or ductile-iron tapping sleeves used in water and sewage systems. Tapping sleeves are used with tapping valves to permit connection to an existing main without

17、 interruption of service. Tapping valve requirements are not covered in this Standard Practice. 1.2 This Standard Practice covers the performance and design requirements of tapping sleeves of nominal pipe sizes from NPS 4 through NPS 48 (DN 100 through DN 1200), with flanged outlet branch connection

18、s from NPS 2 through NPS 42 (DN 50 through DN 1050). 1.3 Tapping saddles and fabricated tapping sleeves are not covered by this Standard Practice. 2. DEFINITIONS Under this Standard Practice the following definitions shall apply: 2.1 Tapping Sleeve A fitting that can be assembled onto an existing ma

19、in to make a branch or “tee“ connection to the main with a tapping valve and tapping machine, without interruption of service. 2.2 Tapping Valve A special gate valve designed with end connections to provide a waterway opening clearance for tapping operations, as well as, proper alignment and positio

20、ning of a tapping sleeve, valve, and tapping machine. 2.3 Tapping Machine A machine (also known as a drilling machine) used to cut a hole into an existing pressurized or non-pressurized main through the use of a tapping sleeve and tapping valve. The tapping machine is equipped with a cutter, which e

21、xtends through the waterway of the tapping valve and sleeve branch, to cut the hole into the main and remove the cut-out piece (coupon) upon retraction of the cutter. The tapping valve can then be closed to seal the branch connection while the tapping machine is removed from the valve and the branch

22、 pipeline is connected to the tapping valve. 2.4 Main A pipe used in a water or sewer system for distribution of water or collection of sewage. 2.5 Manufacturer The party producing products in accordance with this Standard Practice. 2.6 NPS Indicates “Nominal Pipe Size” (U.S customary). A standard s

23、ize identification number, not necessarily an actual dimension. The (SI) metric-based equivalent is called DN or Nominal Diameter/“diametre nominel“. 2.7 NPT Indicates “National Standard Taper Pipe Thread”. 2.8 Purchaser The party entering into a contract or agreement to purchase products manufactur

24、ed according to this Standard Practice. 2.9 Working Pressure Rating Maximum pressure to which the in-service tapping sleeve should be subjected. 2.10 Other Definitions Other definitions may be found in MSS SP-96. 25、TING The minimum working pressure rating shall be 150 psig. 4. MATERIAL 4.1 General The requirements of ASME, ASTM, AWWA, or other standards, to which reference is made in this text, shall govern the physical and chemical characteristics of the tapping sleeve components. 4.2 Cast Iron 4.2.1 Gray iro

26、n shall be in accordance with ASTM A126, Class B. 4.2.2 Ductile iron shall be in accordance with ASTM A536. 4.3 Bolting 4.3.1 Studs and bolts connecting pressure containing parts shall develop the physical strength requirements of ASTM A307 and may have either regular square or hexagonal heads with

27、dimensions conforming to ASME B18.2.1 Carbon steel bolts, studs, and nuts shall be zinc-coated, as per ASTM A153/A153M or ASTM B633, or coated by some other process disclosed to and acceptable to the purchaser. The purchaser may specify that bolts, studs, and nuts shall be made from a corrosion-resi

28、stant material. 4.3.2 Tee-head bolts connecting pressure containing parts shall meet the requirements of AWWA C111/A21.11. 4.4 Elastomers Elastomers shall be compounded to meet ASTM D2000 and have physical properties suitable for the application. 4.5 Coating See Section 8 of this Standard Practice.

29、5. DESIGN 5.1 General Tapping Sleeves shall be designed with separable component parts which permit assembly on an existing main. Each tapping sleeve shall have a branch connection whose port is perpendicular to and centered on the axis of the main. The branch connection provides an attachment point

30、 for a tapping valve to allow tapping into a main. 5.2 Main Types and Diameters Tapping Sleeves may be designed for use on various types and classes of pipe including ductile-iron, gray-iron (static cast and centrifugally cast), asbestos cement, PVC and steel. These different classes and types of pi

31、pe may have widely varying outside diameters for each nominal pipe size. 5.3 Tapping Sleeve Sizes The manufacturer should identify for each size and type of tapping sleeve they produce, the range of pipe diameters and types of pipe on which each tapping sleeve may be used. Purchasers should select t

32、apping sleeves according to the diameter of the pipe they wish to tap. 5.4 Tapping Sleeve-To-Main Sealing 5.4.1 Provisions shall be made for a watertight seal, at rated working pressure, between the pressure containing tapping sleeve mating parts, and between the tapping sleeve assembly and the main

33、. 5.4.2 A test plug with 3/8 inch minimum size NPT threads shall be provided so that purchasers may hydrostatically pressure test the water tightness of the sleeve assembly on the main, the sleeve-to-valve connection at the branch connection flange, and the tapping valve gate before tapping into the

34、 main. Tapped holes for the test plug shall conform to MSS SP-45 and if required to provide adequate thread engagement, bosses for the tapped holes shall also conform to MSS SP-45. WARNING: For personal safety reasons, DO NOT use compressible fluids, such as compressed air, to check for sealing tigh

35、tness. 5.5 Branch Connections 5.5.1 To ensure clearance for the tapping machine cutter as it passes through the tapping sleeve and into the main, the inside diameter (I.D.) of the branch connection shall be at least 1/4 inch larger than the nominal pipe size of the branch connection. 36、ACTICE SP-1113 5.5.2 The connecting flange of the branch connection shall be in accordance with MSS SP-60 for sizes through NPS 12 (DN 300). Sizes larger than NPS 12 (DN 300) are not standardized at this time. For these sizes, purchasers should verify dimensional compatibility by consulting with the

37、 tapping sleeve and tapping valve manufacturer(s). 5.5.3 Slots with the same width as the diameter of the bolt holes may be provided instead of holes in the branch connection flange. Some combinations of tapping sleeves and valves may require the use of threaded studs and nuts. 5.5.4 The dimension f

38、rom the centerline of the main to the flanged outlet of the branch connection should not exceed the values listed in Table 1. This is to ensure the tapping machine travel will be adequate to make a successful tap. 6. TESTING 6.1 Proof-of-Design Tests 6.1.1 At least one production prototype of each s

39、ize and type of tapping sleeve shall be hydrostatically tested by the manufacturer to three (3) times the rated working pressure when assembled on a test section of pipe. There shall be no fracture of the pressure containing parts and there shall be no leakage through the metal. The test shall be a

40、minimum of five (5) minutes in duration. Leakage at gasketed joints shall not be cause for failure. 6.1.2 Following completion of testing in Section 6.1.1, the gaskets may be replaced or reseated if necessary. The tapping sleeve shall then be hydrostatically tested at rated working pressure for a mi

41、nimum of five (5) minutes and there shall be no leakage. 6.2 Production Hydrostatic Testing No hydrostatic testing is required on production tapping sleeves prior to shipment. 6.3 Additional Tests Required by the Purchaser If tests other than those prescribed in this Standard Practice are required b

42、y the purchaser, such tests shall be specified on the purchase order. Although it is not customary for the manufacturer to make hydrostatic tests of the tapping sleeve, such tests may be made on special order at additional cost. If hydrostatic tests by the manufacturer are required by the purchaser

43、for an order of tapping sleeves, the tapping sleeves shall withstand, without leakage, hydrostatic test pressures not to exceed one and one half (1.5) times the rated working pressures. 7. WORKMANSHIP All parts shall conform to their required dimensions and shall be free from defects that could prev

44、ent proper functioning of the tapping sleeve. All castings shall be clean and sound and have no defects that could impair their service. 8. COATINGS Coatings such as those conforming to MSS SP-98 or AWWA C550 may be specified by the purchaser. The coating shall be applied to the interior and/or exte

45、rior as specified on the purchase order. 9. MARKING AND SHIPPING 9.1 Marking Markings shall be either: cast on gray-iron or ductile-iron tapping sleeves, or permanently marked. In each case the marking shall show the manufacturers name or mark, the year of manufacture, the size of the sleeve, the si

46、ze of the branch connection, and the designated working pressure. The letters “DI“ or the word “DUCTILE“ shall be cast on ductile-iron tapping sleeves. 9.2 Preparation for Shipment The manufacturer shall use reasonable care in preparing tapping sleeves for shipment. 10. ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION, AND F

47、IELD TESTING 10.1 General The manufacturers instructions shall be followed for assembling the tapping sleeve on the main. 10.2 Sleeve Selection The sleeve shall be checked to make certain it is recommended for the actual outside diameter (O.D.) size and material type of the main. Also, the main shal

48、l be checked for out-of-roundness. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1114 10.3 Main External Surface The external surface of the main shall be cleaned, then checked for any surface defects that could impair the successful installation of the tapping sleeve onto the main. The manufacturers recommendation shal

49、l be followed. 10.4 Pressure Testing All tapping sleeves shall be hydrostatically pressure tested after installation on the main as per manufacturers instructions. Any defects or leaks shall be corrected prior to tapping the main. WARNING: For personal safety reasons, DO NOT use compressible fluids, such as compressed air, to check for sealing tightness.
