、 to provide an effective, clear, and non-exclusive standard that will benefit the industry as a whole. This MSS Standard Practice describes minimal requirements and is intended as a basis for common practice by the manufacturer, the user, and the general public. The existence of an MSS Standard Prac

Any certification or other statement of compliance with the requirements of this Standard Practice shall not be attributable to MSS and is solely the responsibility of the certifier or maker of the statement. “Unl

Combining or converting values between the two systems may result in non-conformance with this Standard Practice. U.S. cust

、e. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This Standard Practice covers the dimensions which define the interface between drilling/tapping machine adapters and tapping valves (known as a “joint”); including clearances for the pilot drill and cutter. The positioning recess and mating raised face of the connecting flanges or e
、nd connections, between machine adapters and tapping valves, serve to ensure proper alignment of the machine adapter onto the tapping valve, without affecting the strength of the joint. Only flanged, mechanical joint, push-on, asbestos-cement, and radial compression connections are included within t
、his Standard Practice. 1.2 This Standard Practice covers dimensions for the special connecting flanges indicated in Section 1.1, of nominal sizes from NPS 2 through NPS 60 (DN 50 through DN 1500), for water and sewerage systems. 1.3 Pressure and pressure-temperature ratings are beyond the scope of t
、his Standard Practice. 2. DEFINITIONS (Reference Figure 1 and Figure 2) 2.1 Cutter A circular cutting tool that attaches to a tapping machine to cut a circular hole in the side of a main. 2.2 Drilling Machine See “Tapping Machine.” 2.3 Full-Size Cutter A cutter that cuts a hole to a specified NPS (D
、N) diameter. 2.4 Joint The “interface” or connecting joint between sleeves and tapping valves will be abbreviated as “joint” in this Standard Practice. 2.5 Main A pipe used in a water or sewerage system for distribution of water or collection of sewage. 2.6 Manufacturer The party producing products
、in accordance with this Standard Practice. 2.7 NPS (DN) The acronym NPS indicates “Nominal Pipe Size” (U.S. customary). A standard size identification number, not necessarily an actual dimension. The European or International designation equivalent to NPS is called DN (diametre nominal/nominal diame
、ter) in which size identification number is based on SI (metric) units, not necessarily an actual dimension. Guidelines for SI (metric) conversions may be found in MSS SP-86. 2.8 Pilot Drill The special drill bit that mounts at the center of a cutter and precedes the cutter into the pipe to guide an
、d stabilize the cutter while cutting. Also, pilot drills often include a means of retaining the cut “coupon” within the cutter. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1132 2.9 Purchaser The party entering into a contract or agreement to purchase product or work to be performed, in accordance with this Standard Pr
、actice. 2.10 Tapping Machine (also known as a drilling machine) A machine used to cut a hole into an existing pressurized or non-pressurized main through the use of a tapping sleeve (see Section 2.11) and a tapping valve (see Section 2.12). The tapping machine is equipped with a cutter, that extends
、 through the waterway of the tapping valve and sleeve branch to cut the hole into the main and remove the cut-out piece (coupon) upon retraction of the cutter. The tapping valve can then be closed to seal the branch connection while the tapping machine is removed from the valve and the branch pipeli
、ne is connected to the tapping valve. 2.11 Tapping Sleeve A fitting that can be assembled onto an existing main to make a branch or “tee” connection to the main with a tapping valve and tapping machine, without interruption of service. NOTE: Tapping sleeves conform to MSS SP-111 (Gray and Ductile Ir
、on) and MSS SP-124 (Fabricated). 2.12 Tapping Valve A gate valve with special end connections that are designed to provide proper alignment of a tapping sleeve, the tapping valve, and tapping machine, so that the tapping machine cutter will pass through the tapping valve and tapping sleeve branch wi
、th clearance during the tapping operation. A tapping valve is also specially designed so that its gate opens sufficiently to provide clearance for the tapping cutter to pass through the open valve during the tapping operation, and so that there is sufficient distance between the gate and the valves
、connection with the tapping machine to provide clearance between the gate and the pilot drill and cutter at the conclusion of the tapping operation, when the cutter is withdrawn and the tapping valve is closed. 2.13 Undersize Cutter A cutter that cuts a hole to a diameter which is smaller than a spe
、cified NPS (DN) diameter by approximately 1/2 inch (13 mm) or more. 2.14 Other Definitions Other definitions may be found in MSS SP-96. 3. MAXIMUM CUTTER DIAMETERS 3.1 Each size joint and corresponding tapping valve shall provide clearance to accommodate the maximum cutter diameter listed in Table 1
、, for full-size and undersize cutter dimensions. 4. PILOT DRILL AND CUTTER CLEARANCES 4.1 To provide clearance for the pilot drill, which is located on the centerline of the waterway, and the cutter, the minimum dimensions listed in Table 2 must be provided from the face of the valve flange to any m
、oving part of the valve disc (Reference Figure 2). Dimensions are provided for the two types of tapping machines, type “M” and “U”. 4.2 For tapping valves, the size of the waterway shall include appropriate clearance for the diameter of tapping machine cutter to be used. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-113
、3 5. END CONNECTION REQUIREMENTS 5.1 Tapping Valve Flanges 5.1.1 MSS SP-60 covers the connecting flange joints between tapping sleeves and tapping valves. The end flange of a tapping valve which forms a joint with the tapping sleeve shall conform to the dimensions of MSS SP-60 in sizes NPS 2 through
、 NPS 60 (DN 50 through DN 1500). 5.1.2 The end flange of the tapping valve which forms a joint with the tapping machine must be parallel to and concentric with the opposite flange and concentric with the waterway to provide proper alignment for the tapping operation. A sealing surface shall be provi
、ded on the flange face. This flange shall comply with the dimensions in one of the Tables 3 through 7, which corresponds to the appropriate type of flange. In addition, the flange may be slotted to provide bolt access at bolt locations. 5.2 Tapping Machine Adapter Flanges 5.2.1 The flange of a machi
、ne adapter which forms a joint with the tapping valve shall be compatible with the tapping valve dimensions in one or more of the Tables 3 through 7, which corresponds to the appropriate type of flange(s).
