After initial publication, future maintenance was transferred to

The content of this Standard Practice is the resulting efforts of competent and experienced volunteers to provide an effective, clear, and non-exclusive standard that will benefit the industry as a whole. This MSS Standard Practice describes minimal requirements and is intended as a basis for

The existence of an MSS Standard Practice does not in itself preclude the manufacture, sale, or use of products not conforming to the Standard Practice. SCOPE 1.1 T
17、his Standard Practice establishes general requirements for valves and fittings for use in silicone-free service requiring an increased level of cleanliness. Specific requirements include: a) Cleaning b) Assembly and Testing of Valves c) Inspection and Acceptance d) Packaging e) Marking 1.2 Purpose T
18、his Standard Practice is intended for applications such as painting systems which are sensitive to silicone contamination and for other services requiring an increased level of cleanliness above that of standard industrial valves and fittings. 2. OBJECTIVE 2.1 The objective of this Standard Practice
19、 is to present methods that, when properly applied and combined, will yield a degree of cleanliness suitable for silicone-free systems. 2.2 The proper combination of methods depends upon the component(s), method of manufacture, and if silicone contamination is present. 3. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 3.1 An
20、y cleaning agent used must be compatible with the material of the component being cleaned. 3.2 Chloride-free cleaning agents shall be used on stainless steel. 3.3 This Standard Practice does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. ADVISORY: It is the respo
21、nsibility of the user of this Standard Practices to establish appropriate safety and health practices, and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations. 3.4 Used cleaning solutions shall be disposed of in accordance with appropriate hazardous waste regulations. 3.5 Cleaning, inspection,
22、post-clean testing, and packaging shall be conducted by properly trained and qualified personnel knowledgeable of this Standard Practice. _ INFORMATIONAL NOTE: Piping and flanges are outside the scope of this Standard Practice. However, flanges are covered only if they are integral to the valve or f
23、itting. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1402 4. CLEANING 4.1 Valves Prior to assembling the valve, all parts shall be separately cleaned per the following procedure: 4.1.1 The area for cleaning shall be clean and dust-free. All cleaning shall be performed in an area that is free from silicone and airborne
24、silicone particles. 4.1.2 The assembly bench shall be covered with a clean polyethylene sheet or equivalent. 4.1.3 A full-length lint-free lab coat, or equivalent, and lint-free gloves shall be worn while in the cleaning area. 4.1.4 All valve part surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned using appropria
25、te cleaning agents, per instructions provided by the cleaning agent manufacturer. 4.1.4.1 Safety Data Sheets (SDS), formally known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), shall be consulted for proper handling of cleaning agents. 4.1.4.2 Some solvents may damage non-metallic parts of the valve. The c
26、leaning agent manufacturer should be consulted for compatibility with valve part materials, or sample parts should be tested to ensure the cleaning agent is not harmful to the part. 4.1.5 Clean all surfaces which may contact the valve to remove all traces of silicone. 4.2 Fittings All fittings shall
27、 be cleaned per the following procedure: 4.2.1 The area for cleaning shall be clean and dust-free. All cleaning shall be performed in an area that is free from silicone and airborne silicone particles. 4.2.2 A full-length lint-free lab coat, or equivalent, and lint-free gloves shall be worn while in
28、 the cleaning area. 4.2.3 Each fitting shall be thoroughly cleaned using appropriate cleaning agents, per instructions provided by the cleaning agent manufacturer. 4.2.3.1 SDS/MSDS shall be consulted for proper handling of cleaning agents. 4.2.3.2 Some solvents may damage non-metallic fittings. The
29、cleaning agent manufacturer should be consulted for compatibility with fitting material, or sample fittings should be tested to ensure the cleaning agent is not harmful to the fitting. 5. ASSEMBLY AND TESTING OF VALVES(a)5.1 All assembly tools shall be cleaned with acceptable cleaning agents. 5.2 As
30、sembly shall occur in a clean and dust-free environment. 5.3 Assemble the valve and conduct testing as per the appropriate product standard. 5.3.1 Surfaces of the test equipment coming in contact with the valve should be cleaned with an appropriate cleaning agent. 5.3.2 Testing shall not introduce s
31、ilicone into the valve as a byproduct. NOTE: (a) The assembly and/or testing of fittings may not be typical; however, if such processes are necessary, as agreed between the purchaser and fitting manufacturer, then Section 5 shall be followed. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1403 6. INSPECTION AND ACCEPTANC
32、E CRITERIA 6.1 This inspection and acceptance test shall be utilized unless an alternative procedure is required by the purchaser. The silicone-free test utilizes a degreaser or solvent specified by the valve or fitting manufacturer. Degreasers and solvents should be handled and disposed of in accor
33、dance with SDS/MSDS and all governmental and environmental requirements. The manufacturer shall verify that the degreaser will not react with the test paint used in Section 6.4. 6.2 Prepare a test plate to verify the valve or fitting is free of silicone contamination. Clean a stainless steel plate (
34、typical size is 6 in. x 6 in. (152 mm x 152 mm), however, plate should be sized to capture all of the run-off) with appropriate degreaser and allow to dry. Wipe the test plate with an isopropyl alcohol soaked, lint-free cloth, to eliminate any static charge. Allow to dry thoroughly. Spray all interi
35、or and exterior surfaces of the valve or fitting with the specified degreaser and catch the liquid run-off on the prepared test plate. 6.3 The degreaser shall be allowed to dry (degreaser will evaporate rapidly). Avoid breathing degreaser vapors. 6.4 The plate shall be sprayed with an acrylic spray
36、paint or other type of paint, as specified by the purchaser. Silicone will prevent the paint from sticking to the plate, creating defects (“fish-eyes“ or bubbles) in the painted finish. 6.5 Any visual paint defect, including “fish-eyes” or bubbles, is cause for rejection. 6.6 Multiple valves or fitt
37、ings, up to a total of fifteen (15), may be tested by spraying each sample and dripping onto a single stainless steel test plate and then processing as specified. All valves or fittings are either accepted or rejected by the test. 6.7 Fittings may be inspected per a random sampling plan, deemed acce
38、ptable by agreement between the purchaser and fitting manufacturer. 7. PACKAGING 7.1 Valves The valve opening should be covered with protective metal or plastic caps or plugs that have been cleaned as per this Standard Practice. The inspected and accepted valve assembly shall be individually wrapped
39、 with a minimum 3 mils (0.076 mm) thick unused polypropylene plastic(a)and sealed with reinforced tape. Other packaging materials are acceptable by agreement between the purchaser and valve manufacturer. Item identification markings shall be clearly visible without opening the bag. When group packag
40、ing, each item is to be individually sealed in a polypropylene plastic bag. 7.2 Fittings Fittings that have been cleaned per this Standard Practice shall be packaged individually, or in multiple quantities, in an unused polypropylene plastic(a)bag with a 3 mils (0.076 mm) minimum thickness. The bag
41、shall be heat-sealed to prevent contaminants from entering. Other packaging materials are acceptable by agreement between the purchaser and fitting manufacturer. Item identification markings shall be clearly visible without opening the bag. When group packaging, each item is to be individually seale
42、d in a polypropylene plastic bag. NOTE: (a) Unused polypropylene plastic inherently refers to a “clean” product that is free of grease and silicone, or other contaminants.
